Recently watched the latest Veronica Explains (@veronica) video about self-hosting an AOL Instant Messenger server.
I think it's really cool, but I don't know how I would be able to connect a client to it on a modern computer and OS. Pidgin used to support AIM, but recent versions no longer support it. I think there's plugins for it, but I can't find any comprehensive explanation for how to do it.
Anybody got any suggestions? Ideally, it should be something that works on Linux.

One thing that I haven't seen in folks reminiscing about #AIM are the ads... I found a partial backup of my C: drive from ~2001 with the urlcache directories from my AIM profiles intact... I had to convert them, but these are some real proper GIFs, with tiny bits of the frame overlapping a large background. Real artisanal stuff.
I look at stuff like this and think: "This used to be someone's job."

They were calling attention to the ongoing problems plaguing Indian communities throughout the Americas: lack of jobs, housing, health care, as well as dozens of pieces of legislation before Congress canceling treaty obligations of the U.S. government toward various Indian tribes. They submitted petitions signed by one-and-a-half million Americans to President Jimmy Carter.

I, along with a lot of AIM users in the 2000s, remember having silly chats with SmarterChild
A solid percentage of those chats were spent bullying the chatbot, such that it would shut down conversation until it detected that you had apologized for the behavior
There’s now a project to make a documentary to talk to the original creators, then resurrect SmarterChild to apologize for all the bullying back then
Just a few more days in their Kickstarter campaign! If you have some memories of ol’ SmarterChild, back it like I did
