#DeweyBurdock, A Renewed #Uranium Project, Threatens #SacredWaters in the #HeSapa

"As #Indigenous peoples, we are accustomed to generational battles. The fight to both return and protect the #ȞeSápa ( #BlackHills ) in #SouthDakota is one of those fights. Our #SacredSites and waters are constantly facing threats from new mining efforts.
"The Dewey-Burdock Uranium Project is a proposed mine covering approximately 10,580 acres across private and federal lands within the Ȟe Sápa. Individuals, organizations, and communities have been fighting against this uranium project for 20 years due to the radioactive waste it would generate, posing major threats to the health of people, animals, land, and water in the area.
History of Uranium Mining and Native Communities
"Native communities in South Dakota are no strangers to the risks posed by uranium mines. In 1962, about 200 tons of radioactive material from old #UraniumMines seeped through a broken dam at the #AngosturaReservoir and made its way into the #CheyenneRiver, upstream from #PineRidge. This meant that many living on the #PineRidgeReservation were exposed to #RadioactiveWater. Exposure to #radioactive materials is linked to #cancer, cardiovascular disease, neurological disorders, #AutoimmuneDisorders, #thyroid disease, and more. We know that even 50 years later, high uranium levels are still present in #AngosturaReservoir in the southern Ȟe Sápa.
"The Angostura Reservoir is not far from where the proposed Dewey-Burdock Uranium project is located. So it makes sense that the surrounding community opposes a project that risks leaking even more radioactive material into the local ecosystem and waters. It is important to note that the threat from radioactive waste does not lessen over human time scales. Waste from uranium mining remains radioactive at harmful levels for hundreds of thousands of years.
"We have seen the impact on Native communities when radioactive waste from uranium mining and processing is left behind. Today, over 500 abandoned #UraniumMines are scattered across the #NavajoNation, causing numerous health disparities. We also see how what was once a historical gathering place for #Yakama peoples on the shore of the #ColumbiaRiver is now a #Superfund site so contaminated that spending a few minutes in the soil underneath some of the buildings would expose someone to enough radiation to kill an adult."

Kristi Noem was nominated by President-elect Donald Trump to serve as the next Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, a decision that’s raised red flags for Native people in South Dakota, but also may provide an avenue for change.
"'We need to come together now, more than ever,' Oglala Sioux Tribe President Frank Star Comes Out said during a public intertribal meeting Nov. 13. 'I’m hoping we have a better governor in South Dakota that will work with us because we have issues that we need to bring to the table with the state.'
"Noem made South Dakota history earlier in May when she was banished from every reservation in the state following disparaging remarks made regarding alleged cartel activity on reservations and about Indian education. At one point Noem alleged tribal governments benefit from cartel presence and are failing their youth.
"During a May press conference, Noem responded to the banishments by asking why tribes 'don’t ban the cartels.' She’s banned from all nine reservations in the state: the #PineRidge, #CheyenneRiver, #StandingRock, #LowerBrule, #Rosebud, #LakeTraverse, #CrowCreek, #Flandreau and #Yankton reservations. Standing Rock and Lake Traverse both span into North Dakota."

"Emergency management is another area where Noem and the #OcetiSakowin (#Lakota, #Nakota, #Dakota nations have struggled.
"In December 2022, the Pine Ridge and Rosebud reservations were crippled by an extreme winter storm. Unable to get wood or propane, some households resorted to burning clothes and furniture to stay warm. A 12-year-old Sicangu Lakota boy, Honor Beauvais, died during the storm on the Rosebud Reservation, along with three other tribal citizens.
"When banning the governor, the #RosebudSioux tribe cited a delayed emergency declaration from Noem. Noem did not activate the South Dakota National Guard until Dec. 22, nearly 10 days after the storm began.
"The council also cited concerns with Noem’s support of the #KeystoneXL [#KXL] Pipeline in 2019 and an increase in penalties for pipeline protestors, referenced Noem’s opposition of #COVID19 checkpoints on the Pine Ridge and Cheyenne River Reservations, removal of teaching standards regarding #NativeAmericanHistory, legal threats to the #FlandreauSanteeSioux Tribe regarding its #MedicalCannabis operations and return of unused Emergency Rental Assistance funds in 2022 without consulting tribes."

The film, 'Spaces of Exception,' now being shown around the world, begins on #PineRidge, with the history of the resistance to the 'fat takers,' and travels to the refugee camps of Palestine, before arriving at the land of #AkwesasneMohawk, and the words shared of true sovereignty.
"Then, there are the images of the #OilAndGas, the #fracking, and #coal mining on the #NavajoNation, where #Dine' say the true literacy once known, talking with the #NaturalWorld, is being lost. Now, there is the destruction of the burial and sacred places, as #asthma takes over lives.

Freiheit für Leonard Peltier - Aktivist des American Indian Movement!
2024 jährte sich zum 51. mal die Besetzung des Ortes Wounded Knee in Süd Dakota / USA. Hier fand 1890 ein Massenmord an 300 Kindern, Frauen und Männern vom indigenen Stamm der Lakota durch die US Armee statt.
Im Januar 1973 besetzten Aktivisten*innen des American Indian Movement (AIM) diesen Ort, um gegen die mörderische Politik der US Regierung zu demonstrieren. Sie machten damit auf Landraub und die kulturelle sowie physische Zerstörung der amerikanischen Ureinwohnerinnen aufmerksam. Damals war in der Pine Ridge Reservation, in der Nähe von Wounded Knee eine mörderische Paramiliz aktiv, welche die Bevölkerung und insbesondere #AIM Sympathisant*innen angriffen und z.T. ermordeten.
Die gegen derartige Praktiken gerichtete #Protestaktion in Wounded Knee erhielt weiltweite Aufmerksamkeit, auch in der dt. Presse. Die Zustände auf der #PineRidge #Reservation änderten sich dadurch jedoch leider nicht.
Der AIM Aktivist Leonard #Peltier befand sich 1975 dort, um die Bevölkerung gegen den #Terror zu unterstützen und wurde unter konstruierten Vorwürfen für einen angeblichen Mord am 6. Februar 1976 verhaftet und kurz darauf ohne stichhaltige Beweise verurteilt. Er wird seit inzwischen 48 Jahren als politischer #Gefangener in verschiedenen US-amerikanischen #Hochsicherheitsgefängnissen festgehalten.
Seine Verhaftung und die Repression gegen A.I.M. waren Teil des sogenannten #COINTELPRO Programmes von der US-#Bundespolizei #FBI, die die Zersetzung und Zerschlagung der damals starken Protestbewegungen, u.a. auch der Black Panther Party mit geheimdienstlichen und damals noch illegalen Mitteln betrieb.
Leonard Peltiers #Verurteilung zu zwei Mal lebenslänglicher #Haft war nur in Folge der Bedrohung mehrerer Zeug*innen, welche ihre Aussagen später widerriefen, massiver Beeinflussung der Geschworenen und erfundener, heute als falsch nachgewiesener Beweise möglich.
Verschiedenste Bücher, Filme und Songs griffen seinen Fall in den folgenden Jahrzehnten weltweit auf und trotz einer starken und breiten Protestbewegung hat der Präsident der #USA ihn noch immer nicht freigelassen.
Im Herbst 2022 fand ein 1100 Meilen langer #Protestmarsch durch die USA bis nach #Washington D.C. für seine #Freilassung statt, an welchem sich ca. 2000 Menschen beteiligten. Und auch im Rahmen der weltweiten Proteste im Jahr 2016 gegen die Black Snake #Pipeline in #StandingRock – North Dakota, welche für die Profitinteressen eines #Ölkonzerns indigenes #Territorium unwiederbringlich zerstört, wurde sein Fall immer wieder thematisiert.
Mittlerweile ist Peltier im #Regierungsgefängnis von #Coleman in Florida inhaftiert. Sein #Gesundheitszustand ist in Folge mehrerer chronischer Erkrankungen, einer #Coronainfektion sowie seines fortgeschrittenen Alters sehr schlecht. Eine lebensbedrohliche #Aortaaussackung könnte durch eine Operation behoben werden, was ihm jedoch seit Jahren verweigert wird.
