  1. And as a citizen of the country that bombed and then conducted research on the bomb victims, let us reckon with the harm that we have caused. There are so many wrongs in human history that should never happen again. Clear-eyed remembrance and examination is important. #TruthAndReconciliation #NeverAgain

  2. A Day for the World to Say Sorry

From Australia’s National Sorry Day Toward an International Day of Truth, Repentance, and Repair

    A PeaceGrooves Reflection

There are words so overused that they risk becoming weightless. Sorry is one of them. We say it when we bump into someone in a hallway, when we answer an email too late, when we make an insignificant mistake. Yet there are times when sorry is not small at all. There are wounds so deep, so deliberately inflicted, and so long denied that the speaking of sorrow becomes an act of public truth.

Australia’s National Sorry Day, observed each year on May 26, is such a day. It remembers the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children forcibly removed from their families, communities, languages, and cultures under government policies now associated with the Stolen Generations. The date marks the anniversary of the 1997 tabling of the Bringing Them Home report, the landmark national inquiry that gathered testimony from survivors and documented the devastation caused by these removals. The report called not only for recognition of what had happened, but for apology, healing, reparations, family reunion, access to records, and measures ensuring such violations would never recur.

National Sorry Day did not begin as a sentimental holiday….

  3. Retired academics, lawyers and writers in Canada, backed by conservative organizations, collaborate to produce a more positive version of the country's residential school history and create doubt about the harms caused by residential schools.

  4. Canada’s residential school abuse survivors face fresh battle to stop testimony being destroyed | Canada | The Guardian

    > First Nation communities warn that government must act as accounts face destruction, risking central part of Canada’s reckoning with its colonial legacy

#TruthAndReconciliation can't happen if we keep burying the evidence.

Hope the fuck am I supposed to be proud of Canada if we keep doing this?

  5. "It's really angering for me to see these people come here to try to wreak havoc … you have one of the best schools in the country, and it's a productive society that we have going on here. And they're here to just wreak havoc. So of course I'm going to voice my opinion." ~ one of almost 1,000 protesters at UBC in Vancouver today.

OneBC denies the truth about #FirstNations residential schools and the unmarked graves.

This RW party in B.C. audaciously tried to hold an event at the UBC "Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre". Their purpose?? To accuse UBC of "promoting falsehoods about 'unmarked graves'"

A very important #documentary by #aptninvestigates about #residentialschooldenialism, which should be a crime.

The doc. is fairly well done, my one complaint is that they didn't give the #survivors enough air time, and gave too much to the racist horror show of a woman that is a scourge to the #indigenous people...I won't give her the attention by mentioning her name.

  8. Truth and Reconciliation: A Call to Learn

This day is a call for all Canadians to learn and reflect on the residential school system, which operated for over 160 years. It's an opportunity to engage with the history, read the TRC's 94 Calls to Action, and listen to Survivors' stories to understand our shared past. #Canada #TruthAndReconciliation #IndigenousHistory #Education 🇨🇦

  9. Urban highways are today’s indoor smoking.

Both poison the public. Both have been defended as freedom.

We need people who can remember and dream of something different. I look forward to the day that I-93 is closed to downtown Boston. Thru traffic only.

  10. The article names a couple of people; Dallas Brodie, Maxime Bernier and a ‘B.C. Conservative staffer’ (that would be Lindsay Shepherd) who was fired from the party, but there are plenty more Conservative politicians and influencers trying to make hay by denying the reality of residential school history in Canada.

Name them and shame them all.

  11. Residential school genocide denialism is a serious, critical problem. It's every bit as harmful, evil, and traumatizing as Holocaust denialism. Holocaust denialism is, as it should be, illegal in many places and educational systems.
Residential School denialists are unfortunately making waves.
This lunch and learn by the TRC helps to deconstruct and respond to those who put up barriers to Indigenous healing.

  12. The Waterloo police are all over social media saying how they have an orange squad car to spread awareness about truth and reconciliation. Truth is, I did not go to the event today because their presence disturbs me.

Last year, when I did go, the cops were the very first people thanked for being there. It felt like a gut punch. This is not ok. The police do not make me feel safe. They make me go into high-alert mode.

A few years ago, I stopped three Waterloo police officers from abusing a disabled woman. I heard screams for help and came running only to find them dragging her across the parking lot of the police station. She was not violent. She was not resisting. She was being assaulted. Her shirt was half off and her shoulder was dislocated. I didn't know what to do, but got out my phone to record. They let go of her as soon as they saw me with my phone. I stayed there until the woman got away. I made sure she was safe, and then I left, never turning my back on them.

The same year, an elder I know at Six Nations texted me in a panic because police were shooting at her and other Indigenous women with baton rounds.

Police presence at Indigenous events is not reconciliation. It is a threat dressed up as a photo op. It is a reminder of how police were integral to Indigenous children being stolen and placed in residential "schools."

  13. CBC: The Orange Shirt Society has spent more than a decade promoting Orange Shirt Day to create awareness about the impacts of Indian Residential Schools, but it's now fighting back against companies that have appropriated the Orange Shirt with non-complaint designs.
