  1. #PortlandME - #JazzAtTheMovies film series

"#WMPG’s Jazz At The Movies team are pleased to present our first film of the 2026 season, the documentary 'Music Pictures: #NewOrleans'.

"Beautifully shot and recorded, the film is a loving portrait of four Crescent City jazz, soul, and blues legends, and a celebration of 100 years of New Orleans musical history.

"Directed by New Orleans native filmmaker #BenChace, 'Music Pictures: New Orleans' is a vibrant documentary exploring the rich musical heritage of New Orleans. It showcases the city’s diverse musical landscape, from legendary #JazzClubs to lively street performances, highlighting the influences of #Creole, #AfricanAmerican, and #French cultures, and how historical events, like #MardiGras and #HurricaneKatrina, have shaped the city’s music scene. Through interviews with local musicians and historians, Music Pictures: New Orleans reveals music’s central role in the city’s cultural and social fabric.

"The film showcases four New Orleans music legends: Grammy-winning #IrmaThomas 'The Soul Queen of New Orleans' ; #BennyJonesSr., the leader and drummer of the world renowned #TremeBrassBand; guitarist #LittleFreddieKing, the 'Last King of the Blues'; and the pianist and educator, #EllisMarsalisJr., patriarch of the famed jazz family, in what would be his last concert before his death. Music Pictures: New Orleans follows each of the four artists, one by one, as they talk about their lives, rehearse, and record a new album in the studio in early 2020s. By combining vintage footage with live interviews and rare backstage access, this film provides a wonderful snapshot of New Orleans as the home for so much great American music, from #soul to #BrassBand to jazz and #TheBlues. What better way to get ready for the Mardi Gras season!"

"Perhaps the best-known sacrifice zone in the United States is '#CancerAlley' in #Louisiana, an 85-mile stretch of land along the #MississippiRiver containing over 200 #petrochemical plants. Serious air and water quality violations have been documented since the 1970s, and elevated #cancer risk has been found. The region's population is disproportionately #Black and #LowIncome.

"Commentators including Chris Hedges, Joe Sacco, Robert Bullard and Stephen Lerner have argued that #corporate business practices contribute to producing #SacrificeZones and that these zones most commonly exist in low-income and minority, usually #AfricanAmerican communities. Sacrifice zones are a central topic for the graphic novel #DaysOfDestructionDaysOfRevolt, written by Hedges and illustrated by Sacco.

"In 2012, Hedges stated that examples of sacrifice zones included #PineRidge, South Dakota and #CamdenNJ. In 2017 a #WestCalumet public housing project in East Chicago, Indiana built at the former site of a lead smelter needed to be demolished and soil replaced to bring the area up to residential standards, displacing 1000 residents. In 2014, Naomi Klein wrote that 'running an economy on energy sources that release poisons as an unavoidable part of their extraction and refining has always required sacrifice zones."

  4. Majority-Black Town in Ohio Launches Armed Watch after Neo-#Nazi, #Klan Provocations

    from #WorldOutlook
    February 28, 2025

"On February 7, about a dozen masked men, some of them carrying AR-15 semi-automatic rifles, drove a U-Haul truck to a freeway overpass at Lincoln Heights’ edge. The men, dressed in black, shouted racist slurs and waived black flags with red swastikas on them. Enraged Lincoln Heights residents soon approached to counter protest. Local police who converged on the scene from the nearby town of #Evandale, across the highway, appeared cordial toward some of the white supremacists. As the crowd of Lincoln Heights residents swelled, the ultra rightists got back on their truck and drove off. Counter protesters burned the Nazi flags left behind."

  5. #OTD 1967, #ThurgoodMarshall was confirmed by US Senate as a US #SupremeCourt Justice, sworn in only 18 days after Pres. Johnson signed the #VotingRightsAct and 13 days after the race riots in Watts.

The great-grandson of slaves, and first ever #AfricanAmerican to serve on the highest court in the land, Marshall had graduated #HowardUniversity law school in 1933. As a lawyer he'd previously won 29 of 32 legal cases argued before #SCOTUS, including Brown v. Board of Education in 1954, which ruled school segregation in Topeka KS, and by default elsewhere throughout the USA was not only crappy, but #unconstitutional.

His 24 year tenure on the court, included anti discrimination cases and opposition to the death penalty, and service extended through retirement in 1991, with him passing away at the age of 84 in 1993.
