‘The cavalry’s coming!’: Indigenous activism from 1492 to Standing Rock
Famed Indigenous activists like Leonard Peltier and Madonna Thunder Hawk and younger activists shared their thoughts with ICT about the evolution of Indigenous activism from the rise of the American Indian Movement in the 1960s to Standing Rock and beyond.
by Kevin Abourezk, May 11, 2026
#CannonballND – "The field is serene. The blades of brown grass, not yet awakened by spring rains, sway gently. In the distance, the #MissouriRiver cuts a blue streak across the unbroken plains. The silence is punctuated only by the sound of passing cars and the low hum of rushing water in nearby #CannonballRiver.
"But if you listen carefully, you can hear defiant voices shouting and then screaming.
"Ten years ago, this land exploded.
"For nearly a year, from April 2016 to February 2017, thousands of people stood strong against #MilitarizedPolice, #FederalTroops and #PrivateSecurityForces [#Blackwater] hired to protect the 1,176-mile #DakotaAccessPipeline. They gathered to resist a private corporation’s efforts to build a pipeline less than a mile from the #StandingRockSioux Reservation near the #NorthDakota-#SouthDakota border.
"In the end, they were forced to evacuate their camps as authorities quieted, but never fully extinguished, the uprising. Some would say the fire that ignited at #StandingRock was lit decades earlier by #NativeActivists who fought oppression and violence in the 1960s and 1970s.
"While Native people have resisted #colonization and its impacts since 1492, the rise of the American Indian Movement in the 1960s marked a turning point in the efforts of Native people to join together and speak in one voice. That torch of resistance was carried all the way from places like #AlcatrazIsland and #WoundedKnee to a field near the Missouri River in 2016.
"The #NoDAPL movement reached its height on Nov. 20, 2016, when hundreds of water protectors gathered on a bridge to clear two burned-out trucks that impeded a public roadway that provided access to the pipeline drill site and to the camp. The confrontation was the most violent clash between water protectors and authorities during the protest and led to nearly 200 people being injured, some seriously."

Some background about #PeSla
Pe’ Sla Controversial Drilling Project
GABRIELLE NELSON, March 25, 2026
Excerpt: "The decision memo doesn’t mention Pe’ Sla. Gubble says in the memo, 'There are no known Native American or Alaska Native religious or cultural sites within the project area.' The USDA spokesperson told #BuffalosFire in an email, 'No activities are planned on Tribal trust lands, including Pe’ Sla.'
"The #BlackHills #CleanWaterAlliance says otherwise. The map provided by #PeteLien & Sons shows the project’s drilling sites outside of Pe’ Sla boundaries, which were agreed upon in a Memorandum of Understanding between the Forest Service and tribes in 2024. But a map of the proposed drilling operations made by the alliance using coordinates provided by Pete Lien & Sons shows one site within those boundaries.
"Plus, the alliance says the actual area that needs to be protected from #drilling operations, which includes #noise, lights and traffic (usually 24 hours a day), should be larger. The alliance shows a two-mile buffer on its map. Most drilling sites are within that buffer zone. Yet, the alliance emphasized it is opposed to all drilling in the Black Hills, even outside this two-mile buffer.
"Protected Indian trust land also lies within the Pe’ Sla boundaries. In 2012, four #Sioux tribes — #Rosebud, #CrowCreek, #ShakopeeMdewakanton and #StandingRock — raised $9 million to purchase nearly 2,000 acres of Pe’ Sla. In 2016, the Bureau of Indian Affairs placed that land (plus 200 acres) into federal Indian trust status to protect the land from development.
" 'They recognized that due to the unique cultural significance of the Pe’ Sla area that this situation was different, that this is a special place,' said Gunhammer. 'But now, unfortunately, the Forest Service, Black Hills National Forest, has managed to look past all of this very, very well documented history.'
"Lilias Jarding, executive director of the Black Hills Clean Water Alliance, told Buffalo’s Fire that the project is 'obviously not OK' because of its proximity to Pe’ Sla. She said the Forest Service ignored this when they approved the project without an environmental assessment."

#StandingRock and #Sisseton Wahpeton #Lakotas Seized by #ICE in Minnesota
#NativeAmericans are being detained throughout the United States illegally. Protests continue after the murders of #ReneeGood and #AlexPretti by federal agents in Minneapolis.
By #BrendaNorrell, #CensoredNews, Jan. 25, 2026
"The Standing Rock Lakota Nation reports that a tribal member is being detained after being seized by ICE in Minnesota. Another #Lakota, Sisseton Wahpeton #Oyate, was arrested by ICE. He was located safe, but bruised. He was standing near the site where Alex Pretti, an ICU nurse, was murdered by federal agents in Minneapolis on Saturday. The Sisseton tribal member was among those present who was arrested. He was released without being charged with any crime.
"Other witnesses standing near the site of the crime, the murder of Alex Pretti, say they fear for their lives, and have gone into hiding. Federal agents are reported hunting down the #witnesses to arrest them.
"Northern Cheyenne President Gene Small in Montana reports back from the Minneapolis Indian community."

@ChrisMayLA6 #USA has always been a #gangsterstate. Even Saint #Obama with his Nobel Peace Prize in the bag, spent Tuesday evenings choosing names from his drone-murder hitlist, jailed Chelsea Manning for whistleblowing, trashed Libya to grab oil, and smashed the protest at #StandingRock. #Clinton screwed #Haiti.

Setting Boundaries in Tech, an Elder's Opinion
If someone seeks out advice about something like say ... potty training, a fussy toddler, disciplining teenagers? Their best route is to go find a knowledgeable #grandmother who has already raised several kiddos and probably helped raise several grandchildren. There was one such woman at the #Wellbriety conference I attended in #Portland a number of weeks ago. She and I had lunch and a really good discussion about her presentation which was:
"Setting Healthy Boundaries in Relationships" Sheryl Whitehawk -- look it up.
Now, if that same person is seeking advice about something like... phone settings for increased safety of those same children or grandchildren? A grandmother whose specialty is child rearing is NOT their best bet. They should go seek out someone who worked in the technology sector, who does not actively profit on phone tracking, re-selling pictures as pornography to sex-addicted Israelis, they should go find someone who has as much experience with tech as the grandmothers have with the kids. They will NOT find those people in their stock market bubbled "social media".
They should go find a #TechElder. Older and smarter and more experienced than that college dropout CEO will ever be. He wants people stuck and in that vacuum where they never realize how abused they are being. I have EMPLOYMENT in several tech companies, startups, big corps, pro-bono clients. I know what I am talking about having worked shoulder-to-shoulder with the very people attempting to mitigate those mistakes exploiting clueless grandmothers.
When that sociopath running Meta decides he's bored of watching Palestinian kids and their pet cats get blown up and starving to death? When his apathetic soulless dead eyes decide he can make a bank broadcasting terrorism via his "smart glasses" to his hate-filled white supremacist 100 percent nazi fascist platform?
He will start killing the natives on Turtle Island in as brutal and public manner as possible, same as Drumpf is attempting to do in #Venezuela. Did you all know that Venezuela [was one of the very first countries] to adopt #Bitcoin as a currency? Back in 2021. This is what he fears... people other than him having economic power.
IT ABSOLUTELY DOES MATTER WHAT FUCKING PLATFORM YOU USE TO COMMUNICATE WITH PEOPLE. It matters as much as it matters what language you use to write a software program. It matters as much as each and every heartbeat at #StandingRock and as much as every MMIP who was was sold and stalked to their death via their accelerometer. FIND A NATIVE TECH AND LISTEN TO WHAT THEY SAY.
Some doomers continually push the narrative that the platform does not matter, just the content. What people say is more important than who is controlling the platform But you are completely WRONG. Stop looking at the INPUT people put on the platforms that are controlled by Nazis as being able to save "Democracy" or "change the world". Wipe those facebook share links OFF YOUR SITES.
Unfettered white supremacy is what we got with all your "social movements" and "mutual aid fairs started as Facebook stories".
Do not allow Facebook's CEO's apps into your boundaries. That is the only way to set a healthy boundary. The sneering teenager has never had a good intention in his apathetic life.
