Torn from loved ones, Indigenous children suffered brutal medical injustices

IN 2000, DAVID NAPIER, a freelance journalist then based in Toronto, produced a long story about Indigenous residential schools. It appeared in the *Anglican Journal*, an 'independent' newspaper of the Anglican Church with a large circulation (now about 38,000). The *Journal*’s editor, David Harris, recruited Napier at the suggestion of former *Saturday Night* magazine editor John Fraser to spend a year criss-crossing the country to find out what had transpired in residential schools and tell the stories of any survivors and staff who would speak with him.

Napier’s groundbreaking story brought the grim facts of the schools to a readership that needed to understand what had gone on but was unlikely to plow through the report of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples or John Milloy’s or J. R. Miller’s well-documented works on residential schools.

The Journal was interested in the schools because, following the revelatory hearings of the Royal Commission, residential school survivors had filed about 7,000 lawsuits against the churches that ran the schools until 1969 (after which time the federal government took them over and did no better) and the federal government. A few claims had already been adjudicated, resulting in large damage awards. The churches were staring at the likelihood that many more claims would succeed. Church bankruptcies were probable."

Not a good look RCMP. But it sounds like in the main, they handled the situation ok even if they ran cover for a horrendous elected racist in Dallas Brodie.

Bravo to the people at UBC for making it clear that the agent-provocateur and hate-speech politician has no place, has no voice for her hateful rhetoric.

Residential school denialism *should* be a hate crime. The RCMP should be arresting Brodie, not protecting her hate propaganda tour.

Our Universities must be places of truth. Truths can be debated in context, but Brodie, like Charlie Kirk, isn't actually debating. No minds are going to be changed. No resolution found.

The Waterloo police are all over social media saying how they have an orange squad car to spread awareness about truth and reconciliation. Truth is, I did not go to the event today because their presence disturbs me.

Last year, when I did go, the cops were the very first people thanked for being there. It felt like a gut punch. This is not ok. The police do not make me feel safe. They make me go into high-alert mode.

A few years ago, I stopped three Waterloo police officers from abusing a disabled woman. I heard screams for help and came running only to find them dragging her across the parking lot of the police station. She was not violent. She was not resisting. She was being assaulted. Her shirt was half off and her shoulder was dislocated. I didn't know what to do, but got out my phone to record. They let go of her as soon as they saw me with my phone. I stayed there until the woman got away. I made sure she was safe, and then I left, never turning my back on them.

The same year, an elder I know at Six Nations texted me in a panic because police were shooting at her and other Indigenous women with baton rounds.

Police presence at Indigenous events is not reconciliation. It is a threat dressed up as a photo op. It is a reminder of how police were integral to Indigenous children being stolen and placed in residential "schools."
