So, I am well aware of the controversy surrounding #BuffySainteMarie and her heritage. But whether she is a pretendian (she claims to be adopted, something that's been disputed) or not, a lot of Native Americans accepted her as one of their own, and she had her pulse on what was going on with #AIM...
Buffy's Censored Words Led to Revelations in New #LeonardPeltier Film Premiered at Sundance
"My girlfriend Annie Mae talked about uranium
Her head was filled with bullets and her body dumped
The FBI cut off her hands and told us she'd died of Exposure…"
- Buffy Saint Marie, Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee, 1992.By #BrendaNorrell, #CensoredNews, Feb. 4, 2025
TSAILE, #NavajoNation -- "The words of Buffy Sainte Marie, censored by Indian Country Today, led to revelations about Oglala President Dick Wilson's secret land deal on Pine Ridge in the new film Free
Leonard Peltier, which premiered at Sundance, producer #JesseShortBull told Censored News."Buffy's interview at Dine' College in 1999 was censored for seven years. Before I was fired as a staff reporter, a portion of the interview was published by the newspaper -- but one paragraph was still censored. In the still censored portion, Buffy referred to a secret land deal on the day of the shoot out at the #JumpingBull property on #PineRidge. Buffy said, 'Who recalls that on that day one-eighth of the reservation was transferred in secret -- on that day. It was the part containing uranium. That is what never seems to be remembered.'
"Dickie Wilson planned to turn over the #MineralRights in the Badlands to the U.S. government. The U.S. government wanted the land for uranium mining. Dick Wilson's secret plan was discovered in the documents in the BIA file cabinets by the #AmericanIndianMovement, during the takeover of the #BIA building in Washington in 1972.
"Following the premiere of #FreeLeonardPeltier at the Sundance Film Festival, Jesse Short Bull, Oglala Lakota, and director of the film, reveals how Buffy's words led to the search for the facts about #DickWilson's #UraniumMining scheme with the U.S. government. 'Buffy's song about Anna Mae really shocked me, she outlined it so well,' Short Bull said. 'The plans for mineral development for Pine Ridge were discovered at the 1972 BIA takeover, and by the 1980's the big wig energy companies came to Pine Ridge with big ideas for development."

@PariaSansPortefeuille @MusiqueNow Excerpt from Gord Hill's "Statement on Leonard Peltier’s Clemency and the Case of Annie Mae Aquash"
"Denise Maloney [Anna Mae's daughter] claims she deals in facts, yet she has been a primary source of disinformation regarding her mother’s death and AIM in general. She claims, for example, that Annie Mae was raped before she was killed, although there is zero forensic evidence to support this claim. Neither of her alleged killers were charged with rape, nor are there any witnesses claiming this occurred.
"If we accept the state’s version of events, and those of other AIM members, Annie Mae was suspected of being an informant. This is the entire rationale for her execution. In 1999, at a press conference, Russel Means publicly named brothers Vern and Clyde Bellecourt, of Minneapolis AIM, as being the ones that ordered Annie Mae killed. Both brothers are now deceased.
"John Graham, currently serving a life sentence for killing Annie Mae Aquash.
"Two AIM members, John Graham and Arlo Looking Cloud, are now serving life sentences after being convicted of the killing. They allegedly carried out the execution under the direction of the Bellecourts.
"It would appear, then, that those responsible for Anna Mae’s death are either dead or in prison.
"Why then, is Denise Maloney so adamant that Peltier was complicit in her mother’s death? Leonard Peltier is the last remaining and probably most iconic symbol of the American Indian Movement. It is not simply Peltier she seeks to smear, but the entire movement."

Miami State Rep asks #Biden for clemency to handful of people, including survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking
By: Mitch Perry, January 18, 2025
"With just two days left in his presidency, Miami-Dade Democratic Rep. #DotieJoseph is calling on Joe Biden to extend clemency and pardons to a handful of individuals and groups who she says represent critical cases of injustice and unfairness.
"She’s calling for clemency for #LeonardPeltier, the #NativeAmericanActivist who was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of two FBI agents in a 1975 shooting on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Peltier has been imprisoned for more than 48 years, with dozens of members of Congress urging his release. Peltier, 79, has maintained his innocence throughout his time in prison.
"She wants a presidential pardon for #MarilynMosby, state attorney for Baltimore from 2015 to 2013. Last May she was sentenced to 12 months of home confinement as part of a 36 month sentence of supervised release for making a false mortgage application and two counts of perjury.
"Joseph described Mosby in her letter as 'the courageous State Attorney whose politically motivated prosecution was pay-back for her efforts to hold accountable those responsible for the inexcusable death of #FreddyGray, who was killed while handcuffed in custody.'
"Joseph seeks a pardon for #StevenDonziger, an environmental and human rights attorney. Donziger won a $9.5 billion judgement against Chevron in an environmental lawsuit in Ecuador. He was sentenced to six months in jail in 2023 for failing to comply with a judge’s order to surrender all of his electronic devices, according to CNBC.
"Rep. Joseph is calling for a pardon for #survivors of #DomesticViolence and #HumanTrafficking who are 'incarcerated for desperate acts of #SelfDefense against their abusers, and doing so would redress the system’s failure to protect them and end their cycle of continued victimization.'
"Biden’s tenure in office ends at 11:59 am, Monday, Jan.20.
"Biden commuted the sentences of nearly 2,500 people convicted of nonviolent drug offenses on Friday morning."

33 Members of Congress Urge Biden to Release #LeonardPeltier from Prison
By Steve Neavling, written in 2024
"More than 30 members of Congress are calling on President Biden to grant clemency to Leonard Peltier, a Lakota tribe member who was convicted of murdering two FBI agents in 1975.
'"As Members of Congress, we sign this letter with a deep commitment to the crucial role we play in upholding justice for all Americans — and to also hold our government accountable when we see a case of injustice, as demonstrated by the long incarceration of Leonard Peltier,' reads the letter to Biden, which was led by Rep. Raul Grijalva, D-Ariz., Huffington Post reports.
"'We applaud your commitment to criminal justice reform and your administration’s work to address inequities in the criminal justice system and rectify the past wrongs of our government’s treatment of Native Americans,' they wrote. 'We urge you to take the next step by granting Mr. Peltier executive clemency or compassionate release.'
"Three senators and 30 House members signed the letter. All are Democrats, except for Republican Rep. Tim Burchett, of Tennessee.
"Peltier, a 79-year-old Indigenous rights activist, has been in prison since 1977.
"An all-white jury convicted Peltier of murdering the two agents on South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. He was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences.
"In 2021, tribal members sent a petition to Biden, asking for compassionate release or clemency.
"In January 2017, then-President Obama turned down a similar request for clemency."

#NuclearColonialism v. #RedPower
"The world has no shortage of #PoliticalPrisoners – or of environmental martyrs and heroes– but 80-year-old #LeonardPeltier, a #Lakota and #Anishinaabe AIM member, is arguably the most famous, the legal lynching he underwent so outrageous, and his incarceration in a 'maximum security' prison so protracted. Even former FBI agents have themselves essentially contended that Pelter was scapegoated by the FBI for the lethal shooting of two agents–Jack Coler and Ronald Williams– on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Michael Apted’s 1992 documentary Incident at Oglala, narrated by Robert Redford, is a good place to start if you’re new to this history. But if you’re looking for insights into the role that #UraniumMining played in the conflict, you’d be better off checking out #PeterMatthiessen’s book #InTheSpiritOfCrazyHorse: Leonard Peltier and the #FBI’s War on The #AmericanIndian ovement. To hear a first-hand account, check out Peltier’s memoir #PrisonWritings: My Life Is My Sun Dance.
"Despite well-documented prosecutorial misconduct powerfully depicted in Apted’s documentary, Peltier’s conviction has yet to be overturned. And in the face of decades of global, high-profile pleas for clemency for Peltier, including by James Reynolds, a “senior US attorney who was involved in [his] prosecution,” no president up until now has been willing to free Peltier. Given that he’s in increasingly poor health, time is running out, and the same president who just pardoned his own son may be Peltier’s last shot at clemency. If you haven’t yet done so, check out the Amnesty International petition– and Amy Goodman’s and Denis Moynihan’s recent column–making the case for his release. The Red Nation media collective also has an extensive playlist of podcasts focused on Peltier’s case and the long struggle to free him.
"Peltier, arguably the world’s most visible casualty of nuclear colonialism, was only three years into his sentence when Santee Dakota organizer John Trudell, his contemporary in AIM, delivered a searing 1980 speech at the Black Hills International Survival Gathering. As Zoltan Grossman has documented, 'Multinational mining companies, such as #UnionCarbide and #Exxon, proposed the development of the #BlackHills for energy resources, including #coal mines, #uranium mines, and coal slurry #pipelines.' The Black Hills gathering brought together a global convergence of more than 10,000 Indigenous activists and non-Native allies to hold the line against a repeat of the 1950s, which, per Grossman, had 'result[ed] in the extensive irradiation of the southern Black Hills community of #Edgemont.'"

It’s time for justice: Why #LeonardPeltier must be granted clemency
by Donald ‘C-Note’ Hooker, December 11, 2024
"Leonard Peltier’s story is one of profound injustice. Born in 1944 on the #TurtleMountainChippewa Reservation in North Dakota, Peltier grew up amid systemic neglect, poverty and the long shadow of federal policies designed to undermine Native sovereignty. By the 1970s, he had become a leading figure in the American Indian Movement (AIM), which fought to address the systemic injustices faced by Indigenous communities. This activism, however, placed him directly in the crosshairs of government surveillance and repression.
"On June 26, 1975, a shootout on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota left two FBI agents, Ronald Williams and Jack Coler, dead. The incident occurred against the backdrop of extreme violence and federal overreach on the reservation. Peltier, along with Robert Robideau and Darrelle Butler, was charged with the agents’ deaths. While Robideau and Butler were acquitted on grounds of self-defense, Peltier fled to Canada, where he was later extradited under false pretenses based on coerced testimony.
"Peltier’s trial in 1977 was marred by prosecutorial misconduct, including the suppression of key ballistics evidence that could have exonerated him. Testimony from Myrtle Poor Bear, a witness who later admitted she had been coerced by the FBI, was used to secure his extradition and conviction. Despite these glaring issues, Peltier was sentenced to two consecutive life terms. His imprisonment has since been widely condemned by #HumanRights organizations, including #AmnestyInternational, as well as legal experts and former law enforcement officials.
"Crucially, neither the judicial nor legislative branches sentenced Leonard Peltier to death or life without parole. Yet, through repeated parole denials, he has effectively been condemned to die in prison. This abuse of the parole system undermines the fundamental principles of justice and due process, particularly when significant flaws in his trial have been acknowledged by figures like Judge Gerald Heaney, who presided over Peltier’s appeal.
"Leonard Peltier’s continued imprisonment is not just about one man – it is a reflection of a justice system that fails to protect marginalized communities from systemic abuses. His case is a glaring example of how unchecked power and political motivations can devastate lives and perpetuate injustice."

From Chapter 8 of #KleeBenally's book, #NoSpiritualSurrender - #IndigenousAnarchy, #InDefenseOfTheSacred:
"Darlene 'Kamook' Nichols who had been married to #DennisBanks, received $42,000 from the #FBI to spy on #AIM and help build the case against #ArloLookingCloud and #JohnGraham [in the murder of #AnnaMaeAquash]. Kamook subsequently married the US Marshal who re-opened the case.
"The voluntary state-collaboration of John Trudell against Graham and Looking Cloud also became a flashpoint. John Graham’s extradition from so-called Canada would not have been possible without Trudell’s identification of him to the FBI.
"Though Looking Cloud confessed, he later recanted it stating that he was coerced with drugs given to him by State agents.
"In 2003 #LeonardPeltier issued this statement regarding the John Graham trial,
" 'When we talk of sovereignty, we must be willing to solve our own problems and not go running to the oppressor for relief…We have been and still are at odds with the most dangerous, well-funded, strongest military and political organization in the history of the world [the US government]. Whatever the result of any trials conducted in the courtrooms of our oppressor—the same ones’ ultimately responsible for Anna Mae’s death—we will continue to advance in our movement towards victory, inspired by her memory and her spirit.' [Thread] From Chapter 8 of #KleeBenally's book, #NoSpiritualSurrender - #IndigenousAnarchy, #InDefenseOfTheSacred:
The AIM Song of Anguish
"Though my family was skeptical of, and kept AIM at a distance, I grew up singing the AIM song. I've sung it at actions throughout the world, my grandma Roberta would always want to sing it, her barely audible voice at the drum belying her fierce power, I've sung it with both #RussellMeans (confronting the racist #ColumbusDay parade in Denver) and with #DennisBanks (too many times to recall) and faceless and nameless warriors on many frontlines. Though its provenance is not known, the story I recall that it was spiritual gift to rally AIM warrior during the liberation of #WoundedKnee.
"In analyzing #IndigenousPower and #DirectAction, it's vital to examine the context of strategies, tactics, and State repression that comprises the ongoing legality of #IndigenousResistance, particularly with the historically vital force of the American Indian Movement (AIM).
"Though there are many examples, #LeonardPeltier's false imprisonment for the alleged murder of two #FBI agents in 1975 and the clouded assassination of #AnnaMaePictouAquash are important markers.
"Anna Mae Pictou-Aquash, a strong #Mikmaq warrior with AIM, was found murderd in 1974 in Wanblee on the #PineRidge reservation in 'South Dakota'. Pictou-Aquash is also a symbol of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women [#MMIW], Girls, Trans, and #TwoSpirit movement today.
"Accusations of her murder first pointed to the FBI and later, as AIM members revealed how paranoia of infiltrators had gripped the leadership intensely, rumors surfaced that AIM had her killed. This was a time when bad-jacking (making someone look like a snitch or informant even though they aren't) tactics by feds as part of #COINTELPRO was proving to be an effective tactic against revelutionary groups."

#Vigil for #LeonardPeltier in #SanFrancisco
Article by #BrendaNorrell, #CensoredNews, June 17 2024
SAN FRANCISCO -- "The #PrayerVigil for Freedom for Leonard Peltier, held at the U.S. Department of Justice, honored the #Ohlone people whose land the people stood on, and honored Peltier with a tribute by #PomoYukiResistance. Peltier was remembered for the stand he took for the #Lakota people on #PineRidge before he was imprisoned 49 years ago.
"'It would be very cruel if the parole board denies him his freedom,' said Tony Gonzales, AIM West, pointing out that Peltier's last parole hearing was in 2009. The vigil was held on June 10, the same day as Peltier's parole hearing at Coleman Prison in Florida.
"Peltier's nephew #AdamVillagomez, Dakota Chippewa, said Peltier went to Pine Ridge to help the people.
"'When the grandmas asked for help, to come protect them, to please come help them from being attacked, just for being traditional people, for standing up, standing up for traditional rights, he went there, and put his life on the line and started working with the community.' His mother is the first cousin of Leonard Peltier.
"'They were willing to put their lives on the line,' he said, speaking on living life from the heart.
"The warriors of those days, those in the American Indian Movement, and those here at #Alcatraz, still carry the light of resistance."
