"The 25th Navajo Nation Council and Commission on Emergency Management (CEM) convened an emergency special meeting Tuesday and reaffirmed Resolution No. CEM 26-004, which declared a Navajo Nation-wide state of emergency because of the #SevereWeather and #flooding.
" 'The safety of our Navajo people remains our highest priority as severe storms and flash flooding continue across our communities,' CEM Chairman Marcarlo Roanhorse said. 'We urge everyone to take flood warnings seriously. Never attempt to walk, swim, or drive through floodwaters, and keep children and family members away from washes, arroyos, and flooded crossings.'

"As #Indigenous peoples, we are accustomed to generational battles. The fight to both return and protect the #ȞeSápa ( #BlackHills ) in #SouthDakota is one of those fights. Our #SacredSites and waters are constantly facing threats from new mining efforts.
"The Dewey-Burdock Uranium Project is a proposed mine covering approximately 10,580 acres across private and federal lands within the Ȟe Sápa. Individuals, organizations, and communities have been fighting against this uranium project for 20 years due to the radioactive waste it would generate, posing major threats to the health of people, animals, land, and water in the area.
History of Uranium Mining and Native Communities
"Native communities in South Dakota are no strangers to the risks posed by uranium mines. In 1962, about 200 tons of radioactive material from old #UraniumMines seeped through a broken dam at the #AngosturaReservoir and made its way into the #CheyenneRiver, upstream from #PineRidge. This meant that many living on the #PineRidgeReservation were exposed to #RadioactiveWater. Exposure to #radioactive materials is linked to #cancer, cardiovascular disease, neurological disorders, #AutoimmuneDisorders, #thyroid disease, and more. We know that even 50 years later, high uranium levels are still present in #AngosturaReservoir in the southern Ȟe Sápa.
"The Angostura Reservoir is not far from where the proposed Dewey-Burdock Uranium project is located. So it makes sense that the surrounding community opposes a project that risks leaking even more radioactive material into the local ecosystem and waters. It is important to note that the threat from radioactive waste does not lessen over human time scales. Waste from uranium mining remains radioactive at harmful levels for hundreds of thousands of years.
"We have seen the impact on Native communities when radioactive waste from uranium mining and processing is left behind. Today, over 500 abandoned #UraniumMines are scattered across the #NavajoNation, causing numerous health disparities. We also see how what was once a historical gathering place for #Yakama peoples on the shore of the #ColumbiaRiver is now a #Superfund site so contaminated that spending a few minutes in the soil underneath some of the buildings would expose someone to enough radiation to kill an adult."

"The proposed #ChilchinbetoPumpedStorage project would construct two reservoirs, containing 10,000 acre-feet each of water, one on the rim of Black Mesa and the other 1,500 feet below in the valley. The water to fill the reservoirs would come from either the aquifer deep beneath Black Mesa or the San Juan River, according to the application submitted by the company Nature and People First. After the initial 10,000 acre-feet to fill the reservoirs, the project would require withdrawing an estimated 2,500 acre-feet every year to keep them full.
" 'Like coal mining before, this proposal would require rural communities to sacrifice more land and water so that electricity and profits can be exported to faraway cities,' said Robyn Jackson, executive director of Diné C.A.R.E. 'This isn’t something we want or need, and it’s not a history we’ll tolerate repeating.'
"The groups’ motion cites problems relating to industrializing Black Mesa and its #groundwater, including impacts to local communities and families, depletion of rivers, groundwater, and springs, and impacts to wildlife and their habitat. It cites the applicants’ failure to consult with the #HopiTribe, failure to consider water use in the context of regional drying, and their mischaracterization of support from the #NavajoNation’s Resources and Development Committee. In 2013, the Navajo Nation formed Navajo Transitional Energy Company to acquire the Navajo Mine from #BHP #BillitonNM Coal.

"The attempt to expand coal mining on the Navajo Nation for 110 years comes after President Donald Trump signed his executive order Reinvigorating America’s Beautiful Clean Coal Industry and Amending Executive Order 14241 in April 2025.
"The order said that to keep the U.S. economy strong, protect national security, and lower living costs, the country needs to produce more energy at home, including coal. Another order, 'Immediate Measures to Increase American Mineral Production,' was signed in March, aiming to accelerate domestic production of critical minerals by streamlining permitting, financing, and federal land use processes.
"Since Trump signed the orders, the Navajo Nation has accelerated efforts to establish a dedicated energy office. While the idea had been discussed under previous administrations, it has only recently gained momentum. The office would function as a centralized body to coordinate energy policy, regulatory oversight and long-term energy development.

This dike formed underground when minette magma rose through cracks associated with the Shiprock volcanic system about 30 million years ago. Later, erosion stripped away the softer surrounding sedimentary rocks, leaving the dike standing as a narrow wall and the main volcanic conduit standing as Tsé Bitʼaʼí (Shiprock Pinnacle).
