Hiking with Hoodoos: New Mexico’s Tent Rocks
Scenic stone vista“Is it any wonder that the Cochiti people believe Tent Rocks is a living landscape, as their mere presence changes by the moment based on the trajectory of the sun, the angularity of light and shadows, variabilities in weather conditions, or the demeanor of clouds passing overhead.”
– panethos.wordpress.com
We had our first opportunity to visit magical Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument located between Albuquerque and Santa Fe on April 16. It is hard to describe the surreal beauty of this national monument that includes a magnificent slot canyon, tent-shaped rock formations that are jaw-dropping in their multi-faceted geological history, and other spectacular natural features dotting this post-volcanic landscape.
The national monument is situated within the Cochiti Pueblo.
“For the Pueblo de Cochiti, Kasha-Katuwe is a living cultural landscape. The cliffs, mesas, and canyons are connected to oral histories, traditional teachings, and long-standing relationships between the people and the land. These places have served as areas for travel, observation, learning, and spiritual reflection across generations. Respect for the land is central to Pueblo values, and care for Kasha-Katuwe reflects responsibilities passed down through families and community leadership.” – Cochiti.org
Due to the rare and delicate geological structure of the formations, as well as their spiritual importance to the Cochiti people, Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument has a limited operating schedule that requires prior reservations and prepaid fees for visitors to traverse these amazing formations.
Source: blm.govA national recreation trail leads both hikers and sightseers through a meandering slot canyon and up a steep incline past the tapered hoodoos to a mesa summit. A second trail passes a once-occupied shelter cave and a gathering of hoodoos that resemble a quiet campground amongst the juniper trees or Native American teepee village from afar. A separate scenic overlook is located at the northwest corner of the monument.
Throughout this post are a series of photographs that depict the amazing beauty of Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument.
Peace!

Yesterday we hiked the red rock slot canyon at Walatowa (Jemez Pueblo). It's a very short, easy hike with a substantial permit fee ($13/ea) but it's beautiful, definitely worth seeing.

Slot Canyon Walls” — Soft light penetrates the depths of a slot canyon.
The material making up the walls of Southwest slot canyons varies quite a bit depending on which strata the canyon traverses. Sometimes the rock can be broken and somewhat unattractive, sometimes it can hold fossils or show joints between different layers. But in some places the sandstone seems pristine — solid layers of rock broken only by small details and textures. That was the case here, at a spot where a canyon junction allowed in a bit of extra light…continues: https://gdanmitchell.com/2026/01/05/slot-canyon-walls-2/

“Slot Canyon Detail” — Details of the wall of an Utah slot canyon, illuminated by reflected light.
There is a lot I could write about this photograph, the circumstances of making it, and how it ended up here today. First off, it is an older photograph, made years ago. I periodically revisit my old raw file archives, and I always discover photographs that I left behind. In this case, someone else’s photograph from the Southwest triggered me to review my older work from Utah, much of which is over a decade old. So far, I’ve rediscovered about twenty interesting Utah images from that period. Stay tuned!…continues: https://gdanmitchell.com/2025/10/04/slot-canyon-wallsslot-canyon-detailslot-canyon-walls/

“Overhanging Canyon Narrows” — Tall cliffs overhang a section of winding canyon narrows, Death Valley.
I make (at least) one annual photography trip to Death Valley National Park, and I’ve been doing so for something like two decades. My favorite time to visit is in the winter. This year’s trip was during the final days of February — the calendar said winter but a heat wave made it feel more like summer, with temperatures up to ninety degrees. Many areas of the park were inaccessible due to washed out roads and to construction, so I visited a few familiar places and we nt to a couple of new ones…continues: https://gdanmitchell.com/2025/03/03/overhanging-canyon-narrows/

Took a random, wandering hike up the back side of Black Point, a volcanic geological formation next to Mono Lake. Stumbled across some cool slot canyons. When I drove around to the regular Black Point trailhead parking area, the info kiosk had a vague sign explaining how to find them. There are cool calcium deposits on the sides of some of them and I decided I needed a new profile picture.
I think I may stay here till dark and see if I can get some Milky Way photos over the lake before the moon comes up.

Pity the fool in a slot canyon in monsoon season in a hypercharged rainfall season. "Prepare Accordingly".... (per UT Emery County Sheriff's Office). Notably, they are unlikely to get this warning (WEA, transmitted over cell phone towers... if you're down in a slot canyon, you're never getting a warning). #flashflooding #slotcanyon #sanrafaelswell #flooding

The Slot
I had the chance to visit Anza-Borrego state park in Southern California recently.
The first day there was certainly the nicest and we were able get in a couple of hikes. Our favorite hike is simply known as "The Slot"
The Slot is a considered an easy hike and it isn't bad if you start early enough to avoid the heat. It get's pretty tight in some of these canyons. That's why we bring a little garmin satelite messenger - don't want to get stuck in a James Franco 127 Hours kinda situation. I've always got my #leatherman though, just in case.
