  1. It ‘felt like a #RenéeGood situation,’ U.S. citizen says after ICE encounter

By Juan Benn Jr., Aug. 12, 2026

    #CarolinaMolina: “You’re a ho. You’re fucked up.”

ICE responds with blocking her car and pointing a gun at her.

ICE Agent: “Yeah, you record us. You almost ran us over,” he yells.

“I didn’t almost run you over,” Molina responds. “You’re so full of shit.”

  3. Drones have been on my radar screen (pun intended) for quite a few years...

Don’t Let Police Arm Autonomous or Remote-Controlled Robots and Drones

    By Matthew Guariglia
    July 16, 2021

"It’s no longer science fiction or unreasonable paranoia. Now, it needs to be said: No, police must not be arming land-based robots or aerial drones. That’s true whether these mobile devices are remote controlled by a person or autonomously controlled by artificial intelligence, and whether the weapons are maximally lethal (like bullets) or less lethal (like tear gas). [Or #ElectricShockGloves !]

"Police currently deploy many different kinds of moving and task-performing technologies. These include flying drones, remote control bomb-defusing robots, and autonomous patrol robots. While these different devices serve different functions and operate differently, none of them--absolutely none of them--should be armed with any kind of weapon.

"Mission creep is very real. Time and time again, technologies given to police to use only in the most extreme circumstances make their way onto streets during protests or to respond to petty crime. For example, cell site simulators (often called ' #Stingrays ') were developed for use in foreign battlefields, brought home in the name of fighting 'terrorism,' then used by law enforcement to catch immigrants and a man who stole $57 worth of food. Likewise, police have targeted #BLM #protesters with #FaceSurveillance and #AmazonRing doorbell cameras.

"Today, scientists are developing an #AI enhanced #AutonomousDrone, designed to find people during natural disasters by locating their screams. How long until police use this technology to find protesters shouting chants? What if these autonomous drones were armed? We need a clear red line now: no armed police drones, period.

"There are already law enforcement robots and drones of all shapes, sizes, and levels of autonomy patrolling the United States as we speak. From autonomous #Knightscope robots prowling for 'suspicious behavior' and collecting images of license plates [ #FlockCameras ] and phone identifying information, to #BostonDynamic robotic dogs accompanying police on calls in New York or checking the temperature of unhoused people in Honolulu, to #PredatorSurveillanceDrones flying over BLM protests in #Minneapolis.

"We are moving quickly towards arming such robots and letting autonomous artificial intelligence determine whether or not to pull the trigger."

  5. Oh great... Now we're in the #THX1138 phase of #Fascism!

#ICE #ElectricShockGloves Spark Alarm as $20M Plan Lets Officers Deliver Silent Pain by a Button

The device's own maker bars its use on children, pregnant women, the elderly, or as punishment

    By Jim Manzon
    Published 12 August 2026, 8:00 AM BST

"The product is called the G.L.O.V.E., short for Generated Low Output Voltage Emitter. It looks and works like a standard patrol glove until an officer flips a switch that activates its electrical mode.

"The glove must touch a person's bare skin to deliver its jolt. The manufacturer says the shock usually forces compliance within seconds. Unlike a stun gun, it carries no barbs or projectiles, so it leaves little visible evidence behind."

    [...]

"Jenn Rolnick Borchetta, deputy project director on policing at the American Civil Liberties Union (#ACLU), said the public should have no confidence the devices will be used appropriately. She questioned why civil immigration enforcement needs shock tools, and warned that people being shocked may get no notice."

  7. She protested #ICERaids. Then agents showed up at her door

by Meg Anderson, August 3, 2026

"Early one morning this June, #TreasureThoreson was drinking coffee on her couch in #Minneapolis when she heard a knock at the front door.

" 'I go and I see a woman standing there in office clothes, but with a Homeland Security vest over the top. And I see six more agents standing in my front yard,' Thoreson told NPR. "She said, 'We have a warrant for your arrest, for conspiracy.' "

"Thoreson, a special education teacher, was still in her pajamas. The agent let her change clothes and hug her partner goodbye before taking her into custody.

"The government charged Thoreson and 14 others with engaging in a conspiracy to impede federal agents — a conspiracy it says culminated in the use of blockades outside the Whipple Federal Building, which served as ICE's headquarters during the immigration enforcement surge in Minnesota this past winter.

"The government cited meetings and conversations on the encrypted messaging app #Signal as evidence. At the advice of her lawyer, Thoreson declined to comment on the specifics of the indictment.

    An increasing trend

"The charges against Thoreson are part of an escalating trend. NPR reviewed court records from the last five years to examine how the federal government is wielding one specific charge: conspiracy to impede or injure an officer, which can carry a sentence of up to six years in federal prison.

"The statute, which dates back to the Civil War, has historically been used infrequently. But since President #Trump took office last year, the Justice Department has charged more than three dozen people in at least 10 cases. All of them involve people protesting federal immigration enforcement.

The government has also indicted nearly 50 people on #conspiracy charges in #Michigan, #Texas and #Minnesota using different legal statutes."

  11. #ICE Arrests Surge at #Airports, Opening New Front in Deportation Drive

Federal agents are arresting spouses of Americans, tech workers and others whose visas have expired, including many who have active applications to stay in the country.

By Hamed Aleaziz and Miriam Jordan
    July 28, 2026

Excerpt: "The Trump administration has begun arresting foreign citizens with expired U.S. visas as they travel through airports, including spouses of Americans, according to documents obtained by The New York Times and interviews with immigration lawyers — a tactic that opens up a vast new pool of people for deportation.

"Immigration agents in plain clothes have whisked away targets at check-in counters and arrival gates, with enforcement actions in at least 15 airports in recent weeks. Some of the arrests have occurred quietly, while others have happened as angry fellow passengers filmed the encounters.

"The recent arrests appear to be an expansion of an arrangement between the Transportation Security Administration and Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The Times reported in December that ICE officers were arresting people with deportation orders at airports with the help of information provided by airlines to the T.S.A.

"Now, through a review of #HomelandSecurity Department documents and interviews with lawyers for more than 25 people from more than a dozen countries recently detained at airports, The Times has learned that the program apparently now includes people with expired visas — a much larger group.
Hundreds of thousands of immigrants and visitors overstay visas each year. Many with expired visas occupy a legal gray area, as they are awaiting #VisaExtensions or #GreenCards and have been issued work permits. Such individuals were not prioritized for deportation in the past unless they had committed crimes, and they were rarely detained while waiting for visa extensions or green cards. But that has changed under President #Trump, whose administration has undertaken a campaign of mass deportation and views all visa overstays as illegal.

" 'This administration is working diligently to ensure that aliens in our country illegally can no longer fly unless it is out of our country to self-deport,' a spokesperson for the Homeland Security Department said in a statement. The agency did not confirm the expansion of the program.

"The department, which oversees ICE, has not disclosed how many people have been detained at airports as overstays under the new initiative. The arrests come during a period in which the White House has pushed ICE for more arrests across the country, and Homeland Security Secretary #MarkwayneMullin has pledged to turn 'up the heat on the streets.' To that end, the administration has set a target of 2,000 immigration arrests a day, roughly double the pace from earlier this year.

"Interviews with more than a dozen immigration attorneys, advocacy organizations and an airline employee reveal a broad cross-section of targets: an engineer awaiting a work-visa extension, several newlyweds married to U.S. citizens, and a former au pair.

"Footage of encounters between travelers and ICE officers have flooded social media. In one widely circulated video, Chantal Morales Rojas, a 27-year-old from Ecuador, was detained by plainclothes officers as she boarded a Southwest Airlines flight from Denver to Oakland, Calif., on July 20. She had been spending the weekend with the family for whom she had worked as an au pair, according to the family."

"Brouillette, who is 37 and lives in Manchester, was identified by an ex-wife as the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent who shot #JohanSebastiánDuránGuerrero on Monday.

"Ashley Brouillette told the Portland Press Herald in a phone interview Thursday afternoon that her ex-husband called admitting to the shooting and defending his actions. The Press Herald, the first news outlet to report David Brouillette’s identity, reviewed a screenshot of incoming calls that Ashley Brouillette said she received from her ex-husband via his current wife’s Facebook account on Wednesday.

" 'He was asking me to lie for him and to cover for his character,' Ashley Brouillette said. 'I told him that I was not going to lie for him. And then he tried to say that it was a justified shooting because the guy tried to hit him with his car.'

"She said she has seen videos of Brouillette on the scene of the shooting and told him: 'Nowhere in there does it show that this man charged at you with a car.' "

  15. Man killed by semi after fleeing from #immigration officials in #Florida

Death of unidentified 28-year-old man marks third immigration enforcement-related death in one week

    José Olivares
    Tue 14 Jul 2026

Excerpt: "A person died during an encounter with federal immigration officials on Tuesday morning in Florida, a state highway patrol spokesperson confirmed, marking the third death in one week linked to immigration enforcement operations.

"Officials with #HomelandSecurityInvestigations (#HSI), which is a component of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (#ICE), had an 'encounter' with four men in a vehicle in the parking lot of a convenience store along a busy road in #SaintAugustineFL, the highway patrol spokesperson said. As the four men fled from the agents, one of them ran into the busy road and was struck by a semi truck. The person died at the scene.

" 'The pedestrian was struck by the tractor trailer in the right lane and sustained fatal injuries on scene,' said Master Sgt Dylan Bryan, a Florida highway patrol spokesperson, in a statement. 'The tractor trailer immediately stopped and attempted to render aid to the victim.'

"Tuesday morning’s death marks the third immigration enforcement-related death in one week, as ICE and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) face significant backlash and public outcry following two shootings in Texas and Maine respectively.

"The Florida highway patrol referred all questions to ICE. #DHS and ICE did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

"The statement did not clarify whether the person who died was the target of an arrest operation by the HSI agents.

"#BorderPatrol officials may also have been present at the scene, according to a homeland security source. An image from the scene of the crash shows a border patrol vehicle present at the site."

A coalition of immigrant advocates, local leaders and concerned residents are holding an "emergency protest" after ICE agents shot and killed a Colombian man in Biddeford on Monday.

SCARBOROUGH, Maine — "A group of about 200 local activists, elected officials, community organizations and faith leaders are holding an 'emergency protest' outside the Scarborough ICE facility a day after the shooting death of a Colombian man in #BiddefordME.

"On Monday, 26-year-old #JoanSebastianGuerrero was shot and killed by ICE, leaving behind a wife, 3-year-old child, and sister.

"The U.S. Department of Homeland Security says an ICE officer 'fearing for public safety' [BULLSHIT!] shot and killed the driver. It happened as agents were watching a home of someone they believed was in the country illegally and has a final order of removal from the country.

"Protestors called for the removal of all ICE agents in Maine and the release of all people detained by federal agents.

" 'The governor has to issue a proclamation, saying that ICE is not allowed in our state, and the Attorney General should direct the State Troopers to be filing criminal charges against the murderers in our community,' said @Todd , one of the organizers of the protest.

"Representatives from more than 20 organizations attended the protest including: #MaineYouthPower, Maine Small Businesses Association, Maine #DemocraticSocialists of America, the Maine #WomensLobby, #MaineCoalitionForPalestine, the #MaineGreenParty, #MainePRIDE, #MaineTransnet and the Maine #AFLCIO."

  19. #BiddefordME - ICE quickly cordons off body after agents kill another person

    David Edwards, July 13, 2026

Excerpt: "The killing is at least the 11th fatal shooting involving ICE or Border Patrol agents since Trump took office, the Bangor Daily News reported. Earlier this month, ICE agents fatally shot #LorenzoAraujo, 52, a Houston construction worker, sparking mass protests, the BDN reported.

"ICE has a recent history in Biddeford specifically. Earlier this year, the agency flooded Maine with agents under "Operation Catch of the Day," a mass enforcement sweep. Of nearly 200 people detained statewide, only 11 had criminal convictions, the BDN reported. The Trump administration had claimed it was targeting the "worst of the worst."

"Fecteau had blasted the operation as "#warrantless, indiscriminate, and quota-driven detentions."

"ICE officially announced it had ended the Maine operation in late January, after Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) pressed Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. Agents remained in the state.

" 'More than anything else, I want to know why are you in Maine?' Rep. #ChelliePingree (D-ME) said in a video posted to social media.

"A #protest against ICE is planned for noon Monday at #MechanicsPark in Biddeford, according to WABI-TV. ICE and the Department of Homeland Security have not responded to requests for comment."

  21. #ICE says agent faced danger in #HoustonTX Witnesses say that’s not what happened

A fatal ICE encounter in Houston is continues questions about transparency, use of force and accountability

By CK Smith, July 11, 2026

"A fatal shooting involving an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in Houston is under growing scrutiny after witnesses challenged the federal government’s account of what happened.

"ICE officials said #LorenzoSalgadoAraujo, a 52-year-old Mexican national, was shot after he allegedly used his vehicle as a weapon during an enforcement operation.

"But three men who were inside the vehicle with Araujo dispute that account, saying the encounter unfolded differently and that officers were not in the path of the vehicle when shots were fired.

"The conflicting accounts have turned the shooting into another test of transparency and accountability surrounding federal immigration enforcement. The witnesses’ attorney has said their statements contradict the government’s description of the encounter, while officials have maintained that the agent acted in response to a threat, despite reports that #Araujo was not the person ICE was searching for.

"The case is also drawing attention because the witnesses themselves are now part of the immigration enforcement system. The men who were in the vehicle have disputed the official narrative while facing their own potential immigration consequences, raising questions about how investigations involving undocumented witnesses are conducted and whether those witnesses can safely participate.

"The central question now is not simply whether ICE agents had legal authority to use force. It is whether investigators and the public have access to the full picture of what happened."

  23. #BreakingNews! 🚨 #ICE agents involved in fatal #BiddefordME shooting, lawmaker says

by Christopher Burns, July 13, 2026

"U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were involved in a fatal shooting in Biddeford.

"That’s according to Maine House Speaker Ryan Fecteau, a Biddeford Democrat, who released a short statement about Monday morning’s shooting near Pool Street.

"Beyond that, Fecteau had few other details to make public, saying that the Maine State Police are at the scene gathering details. He expects the FBI to take over the investigation.

" 'These are the details that I have at this time. I will provide further updates, as they are relayed to me,' Fecteau said.

"Monday morning’s shooting is at least the 11th fatal shooting involving ICE or U.S. #BorderPatrol agents since the beginning of the second #Trump administration. That includes this month’s fatal shooting of 52-year-old #LorenzoAraujo, a construction worker, in Houston, according to the Guardian.

"Earlier this year, #Maine became the latest state to see a surge in ICE agents as part of the Trump administration’s #OperationCatchOfTheDay. That surge was cut short amid a nationwide pushback against the agency’s tactics following the fatal shootings of two protesters in #Minneapolis.

"Of the nearly 200 detained in Maine during the January ICE surge, only 11 had criminal convictions, undercutting the Trump administration’s claim that it was targeting the 'worst of the worst.' "

  27. #Mexico to request criminal charges over deaths following shooting of #HoustonTX man by #ICE

By María Verza, July 9, 2026

MEXICO CITY (AP) — "Mexico will request criminal charges over 17 Mexicans who died in ICE custody or during immigration enforcement operations by the #Trump administration, officials said Thursday.

"Mexican Foreign Minister #RobertoVelasco’s announcement Thursday morning further escalated tensions with the United States, as Mexico’s government has sharply criticized the treatment of its citizens under U.S. President Donald Trump’s push to increase deportations.

"The request, which carries no legal weight, will be submitted to state prosecutors’ offices and the U.S. Department of Justice, asking them to consider criminal charges against those responsible for the deaths.

"It will be accompanied by civil lawsuits against the companies that operate the #DetentionCenters in an effort to put an end to #HumanRightsViolations in those facilities, Velasco said.

"President #ClaudiaSheinbaum said Thursday that Mexico decided to “move beyond diplomatic channels” and escalate its complaints after an ICE agent killed Mexican citizen #LorenzoSalgadoAraujo in Houston this week. Sheinbaum said the killing 'is not only sad and regrettable, but also appears to have been targeted.'

" 'We are going to do everything in our power, because we cannot stand silent' in the face of the deaths of Mexicans 'whose only crime is working honestly in the United States,' Sheinbaum said."

  39. Longtime Immigration Court Interpreter Arrested by ICE at South #Texas Airport

The state’s only licensed Hindi, Punjabi, and Urdu legal interpreter is now languishing in a #Raymondville #DetentionCenter. She’s lived in America for 35 years.

    by Gaige Davila
    April 15, 2026, 8:54 AM, CDT

"Last month, Meenu Batra, 53, who has lived in the South Texas border colonia of Laguna Heights since 2002, was on her way to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to work another case. She’s been a court interpreter for over 20 years, the only one licensed in Texas for Hindi, Punjabi, or Urdu. Her language skills are requested nationwide, where she’s contracted to help people making their way through the immigration court system, just as she did for herself 35 years ago when she immigrated from India to New Jersey before settling in Texas.

"She planned to meet with her adult children in Austin after the Wisconsin trip, the only difference she foresaw in an otherwise typical trip. Her routine for years included flying from either Harlingen or Brownsville to far-flung parts of the country where South Asian immigrants needed language access. For this trip, the flight was out of Harlingen.

"But, around 5 p.m. on March 17, Batra was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (#ICE) agents after passing through security at Harlingen International Airport. In a sworn deposition that was filed as part of a petition for habeas corpus—a legal request to be released on the grounds that the detention is unlawful—Batra said the people who arrested her did not have visible badges nor were they wearing uniforms. One of those agents had asked Batra if she knew she was in the country illegally and that she had a deportation order. She replied that her work authorization status, which she applied for regularly after being granted a legal status called withholding of removal by a New Jersey immigration judge decades ago, was good for another four years.

" 'That doesn’t mean you can be here forever,' the agent replied. Two more plainclothes agents would join the two that detained her, bringing her down the escalator and to the front of the airport."

  43. How to Keep ICE Agents Out of Your Phone at the Airport

If you’re traveling, follow these digital security practices to keep federal authorities from getting into your phone.

    Nikita Mazurov
    March 25 2026

"With Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents deployed to more than a dozen airports across the U.S. and border device searches growing increasingly common, it’s more important than ever to consider your digital security before you travel.

"The risks are real. Customs and Border Protection agents have the authority to examine travelers’ devices. In June, for instance, federal agents denied a Norwegian tourist entry to the U.S. after looking through his phone. (Authorities claim they turned him away for admitted drug use; he says it was over a meme depicting Vice President JD Vance as a bald baby.)

"Immigration and Customs Enforcement have already started targeting travelers, with agents in plain clothes forcefully detaining a mother in front of her young daughter at San Francisco International Airport on Sunday after a tip from the Transportation Security Administration.

"If you’re flying, take these steps to reduce the likelihood that your sensitive information is compromised at the airport."

  47. 😡 FFS! So, now the city has decided to close the shelter?!! Will they open it in a more central location? Or just let unhoused folks freeze to death!!! Way to go, #Maine's biggest city!!! Oh, and the asylum seekers are too afraid to stay there! #FuckICE!!!

'Numbers have certainly declined': #PortlandME to close shelter for #AsylumSeekers [and homeless people who need shelter during freezing temperatures]

    by Max Williams, WGME
    Wed, March 18, 2026

Excerpt: "The city also needs to develop a gameplan for a #WarmingShelter by next winter, as this location served as the city’s only #OvernightShelter.

"Allicia Santamore has been living on the streets of Portland for eight years and considers the shelter to be a lifeline.

" 'The warming shelter is awesome for people to sit when its six o'clock in the morning and you got no place to go. You can't stay in your tent no more, it’s f------ freezing,' Santamore said.

"The city says they are talking with Maine DHHS about what to do, but they say it all comes down to funding."

  49. How a Tiny, Inexperienced Firm Landed a $1.3 Billion #Detention Deal To hold 5,000 human beings.

by Samantha Michaels, November+December 2025 Issue

Excerpt: "When the Trump administration awarded a $1.26 billion contract this summer to build and operate a new tent city #detention center in #Texas, it made headlines, and not just because the facility, located at the #FortBliss Army base, was expected to be the biggest of its kind in the country. The company that won the job, #AcquisitionLogistics, was so small it operated out of a single-family home in #RichmondVA. Almost nobody had heard of it. 'A random house…just won $1.26 billion from #ICE,' wrote the New Republic.

"Whereas many companies with ICE contracts had long histories with immigrant detention, including private prison giants such as GEO Group, Acquisition Logistics had no prior experience in incarceration. Previously, its biggest federal contract was $16 million, and CEO #KenWagner is circling retirement at 77. Over the summer, the company’s website was inaccessible to the public, with the header 'Site maintenance in progress.' Archived screenshots showed the firm specializes in supply chain management. Could it safely operate a 5,000-bed detention facility?"

Mystery surrounds #RichmondVA-area home tied to firm behind $1.2B Army #Texas tent-camp contract

    By: The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — "When President Donald Trump's administration last month awarded a contract worth up to $1.2 billion to build and operate what it says will become the nation’s largest immigration detention complex, it didn’t turn to a large government contractor or even a firm that specializes in private prisons.

Instead, it handed the project on a military base to Acquisition Logistics LLC, a small business that has no listed experience running a correction facility and had never won a federal contract worth more than $16 million. The company also lacks a functioning website and lists as its address a modest home in suburban Virginia owned by a 77-year-old retired Navy flight officer."

#CampEastMontana is now the largest #immigrant detention facility in U.S. history, but it’s just one of 19 sites that will add a total of 37,649 new beds for ICE detainment — a 105% increase in the state’s capacity.

Excerpt: "In #ElPaso on Sunday, the #Trump Administration opened the doors to Camp East Montana, the largest ICE detention facility in the country’s history. It reportedly cost $1.2 billion under a U.S. Defense Department contract.

"The new facility is at Fort Bliss, one of five sites where Texas held detainees of #Japanese descent, as well as immigrants from #Germany and #Italy — including #AmericanBorn civilians — during #WorldWarII, according to the National Parks Service and The El Paso Times."

  55. Federal Agents Are Intimidating #LegalObservers at Their Homes: “They Know Where You Live.”

#Immigration authorities in #Minnesota have identified legal observers by name and address, and in some cases showed up at their homes.

    by Austin Campbell
    March 5 2026, 5:53 a.m.

"Former Minnesota state Sen. #MattLittle was lawfully observing federal immigration agents in a Dakota County neighborhood last month when the drive took an unexpected turn.

"As he followed their vehicles, they led him down a rural road that grew increasingly familiar during the 20-minute drive. Soon, Little told #TheIntercept, he realized where the federal agents were headed: his house.

"When he approached his driveway, two SUVs were already waiting, Little said. Agents moved to block his car, claiming he had impeded their investigation and that local law enforcement would be called. No other officers came to his house, and Little was not cited or charged.

" 'The intent was clearly to intimidate us. It’s stressful. It’s a little bit scary. But at the same time,' Little said, 'I just think it’s really important to be out there and monitoring what they’re doing.'

"Interviews, sworn declarations, and video reviewed by The Intercept indicate that Little is not the only person subjected to this kind of #intimidation. Across the #TwinCities, immigration agents have identified legal observers by name and address, and, in some cases, led them back to their homes after they engaged in lawful monitoring of immigration activity. Legal observers say this pattern of behavior sends a clear and chilling message: The federal government knows who they are and where they live.

"These encounters are unfolding amid a rapid expansion of federal #surveillance capabilities.

"Immigration authorities have significantly expanded their use of mobile #biometric and surveillance tools in recent years. Officers with Immigration and Customs Enforcement as well as Customs and Border Protection, for example, can use the smartphone app #MobileFortify to photograph a person’s face or capture fingerprints in the field and compare them against federal biometric databases, according to a Department of Homeland Security inventory of artificial intelligence technologies."

  57. How soon people forget...

    A century ago, #FrancoAmericans were targeted in #Maine like today’s #Somali #immigrants

Opinion by Tommy Pinette, March 3, 2026

"Two years ago, I learned the infamous #KuKluxKlan exploded in popularity throughout Maine during its resurgence in the 1920s. Across the United States, the terrorist group amassed hundreds of thousands of new followers in a rather clever dissemblance as a community service and fraternal organization. At one point, in fact, approximately 30% of Maine’s native-born population were enrolled members of the KKK. Yet they did not target Somali-Americans, people on work visas, or permanent residents from Africa — they vehemently attacked the people we now call Franco-Americans.

"Prominent Franco communities in #LewistonME, #RumfordME, #OldTownME, #AugustaME, and #WatervilleME, called 'petits Canadas,' became targets of violence for the #KKK.

"One local history of the Franco-American community of Old Town recounts a horrific stand-off at French Island: holding torches and weapons, a mob of angry klansmen attempted to cross the bridge onto the island in order to burn it down. Only the rapid efforts of men in the community to block the bridge physically kept the island from going up in flames.

"And yet, I hear many of my Franco relatives talk poorly about immigrants. They repeat similar slogans to the ones President Donald Trump spreads about immigrants who come from Africa, particularly those from East Africa: “they shouldn’t be here … Somalia is not even a country” Animus defines how many Franco-Americans understand immigrants, the people who stand in the very same place their ancestors once stood a couple generations ago.

"Do not forget that our #WhitePrivilege came at a great historical cost in the forms of systemic French language suppression, decades of shameful stereotypes, and barriers to higher education. For almost 70 years, the state of Maine had a legislative policy of only offering public education in English. We must remember our ancestors, the memères and pepères who endured the same xenophobic insults immigrants in America face today."
