I just received this version of Windows 98. Yes, Windows 98, not Windows 98 Second Edition. The original! I used this CD-ROM to update my 86Box VM from Windows 95 and everything worked right out of the box without any issues with drivers or within its device manager. It even managed pretty high-res resolutions and full 24-bit color. 😜

Well, after a day of fighting uphill both ways in the snow, we have 98SE working, with real graphics, and dialup networking!

No sound yet, and that's been a disaster, but it's something. Next: Sound, then games.

Bad news: this machine doesn't support booting off USB.

Bad news, supplemental: can't find my USB floppy drive. It's probably in a box somewhere.

Good news, surprising: found a NIB 56k serial modem in a different box, and CD-Rs can still (apparently) be bought locally, so... Winning?

Well, last night I downloaded a copy of Lotus 1-2-3 to my blank hard drive. Which I've previously put Linux on and took off. Which I put a copy of Windows 98 and Office 98 on. Which I just put random 90s programs on to relive my nerdy, isolationist childhood.

So...relatively fun for an information systems analyst.

I ended up copying the .scr from the VM to a USB key (which involved mounting a qcow2 file which was easy but not straightforward) so I could run it on a Physical, Period Correct, eeepc.

Finished my #ITXLlama builds today. Built around the #Chieftec BT-02 case, it features the ITX Llama motherboard, a #Radeon 9250 and a #3dprinted front control panel I designed with #OLED display, rotary encoder and buttons for the #MT32Pi. Also a much needed reset button, a switch to select either the MT32-pi or GS WaveTable audio and an SD slot. The software needs a bit of tweaking, but this could be an awesome and brand new box for playing #90s era #MSDOS and #Windows98 games. So far it plays #DukeNukem3D flawlessly with #GeneralMIDI sound.

Did you know that the concept of "OS-tan" has existed way before even ME-tan was made?

Take OS Idol Win-chan as an example. Win-chan's earliest appearance in media seems to be from a promotional CD by Enterbrain, which dates back as early as October 1998. This would mean that Win-chan predates Me-tan by almost 5 years. It's not specified what Windows version she represents.

Another example can be Magical Toko-chan who is from around 1999. She seems to represent BSD, has a theme song called "Rainbow Holy☆Trident" and has a sister that represents Solaris.

There is also also another "Wintel Miku" although there’s little art of her. She seems to represent WindowsNT4.0/95/98 and was created as the creator was inspired by Mgaical Toko.

Besides Win-Chan, Magical Toko, Solaris-Chan and Wintel Miku all have sites dedicared to them!

This one is of Windows 98 SE-tan!

Secchan has an appearance of a middle school girl in a turquoise sailor uniform and a yellow bow, and has short, periwinkle hair that is tied to the side, In the early days, her design was a boxy figure akin to Vulcan from the anime "Zatch Bell", known as "Konjiki no Gash" (金色のガッシュ!!) in Japan. However the current design eventually became official, despite the Vulcan box figure still being used as either a toy, or something she can go inside of to either hide, or control with.

Secchan is also shy, but unlike Hacchan (Windows 98) she is more easily angered. She is a fan of professional wrestling, thanks to Hassan's (male version of Hacchan) experience as a wrestler. She likes to say "Mau mau" (まうまう).
