Poem

We begin pouring our thoughts
As if we were throwing water over a raging fire
As if our words were a balm
in case of a disaster -
natural or manmade
personal or public -
That would soothe the wounded, the lost,
the broken, the frightened, the grieving,
like it were a spell that would reverse the chaos,
nullify the damage,
and return things to equilibrium.
We write and write as if lives depended on it -
ours and others,
silence, an unspeakable sin,
We dare not succumb to.
Until every single word has been spilt
from the deep well within us -
only then, we go mute.
only then, we turn away.

We fear words are no solution -
to the pain, the hunger, the madness
and words can be read and forgotten,
written and rewritten,
changed,
erased
and that they do not matter to the dying
or the dead!

And yet, we write and write
because words are birds -
that can travel across borders,
into strange, foreign lands
and make a home
in open minds,
and sing songs
that can ignite a man’s heart,
chirp repeatedly
to make him rise to action;
chirp, to bring about a change;
chirp, to save the world and all of mankind.
