I wrote about my experience with LTE modems on Linux and forgot to share it here. I tested the Quectel EP06-E, Sierra Wireless EM7455 and Sierra Wireless EM7565 with Debian and OpenWRT. Conclusion: OS support is great, the hardware is a bit complicated, OEM versions (especially from Dell) are cursed.

Today I connected to a BBS the regular way, with a 1200bps modem through a dialup line, on a IBM PS1 from 1987 (?) with Procomm+ 2, a call from Switzerland to England. And it was magic, like in the late ‘80. I so much loved that feeling. I really need to pass that knowledge to younger generations, those that are born with WiFi and fiber and have no idea what atdt or ansi or 9600 8n1 means. Or BBS for that matter … that must be preserved. I got my first modem in the summer of 1986, a Prometheus ProModem 1200A (modem on a card) for the Apple II. The first BBS I logged in to was OxGate, an RBBS/RCPM system the phone number of which I still can remember (my earliest BBS software -- firmware-based on that modem card -- had no phone book). I used BBSs avidly until sometime in 1994, when I subscribed to a local ISP's (Widomaker of Williamsburg, VA) dial-up modem-based PPP service that brought TCP/IP to my 486 PC with Windows 3.1. I could then browse the web from home, and that was basically the end of BBSing for me -- for the moment, anyway.
For those interested in experiencing this early form of online community, there are many BBSs online right now, accessible via telnet on systems old and new. I've enjoyed getting back into BBSing this way, especially when using vintage systems to login.

CW: lots of nerd talk about dreamcast and phone lines with dubious delivery
In the service of totally overdoing some #Dreamcast #RetroGaming, I've successfully patched the #DreamPi gateway to be less useful. Buckle up, because this is a kinda long post with little in the way of delivery. :bec_smug:
Normally the DreamPi throws its modem into voice mode, plays a dial tone to fake out the dreamcast, listens to the digits dialed, and then switches to data mode and kicks off a handshake. Stays off-hook the entire time.
This makes sense if you're using an electrically-simple Line Voltage Inducer and a straight connection between the Dreamcast and the modem for minimum part count get-up-and-go. It's actually a really clever workaround.
My tweak adjusts the modem behavior such that it stays on-hook until it detects an incoming ring, then answers and jumps straight into data mode.
This change was made because presently we're using a Valcom DLE-200B phone line simulator which does provide 'local' tone, ringing voltage, and ringdown.
This necessarily means that we lose out on capturing the dialed digits, but it turns out we don't need those at all for pretty much any of the PPP-based games with central servers, and I'm not interested in playing anything outside of that scope.
So now we have a dreampi that can only work in PPP mode and it requires a line simulator to work correctly. Why?
All, ultimately, so that we can hook the DreamPi and two dreamcasts up to a TDM-based #PBX instead of the line simulator, wherein either of the latter can dial the former, thinking they're dialing Dreamcast Online Services. It goes through the whole ring-in process, which terminates at DreamPi, handshakes, and tunnels to Dreamcast Live -- getting us the goods.

Ledwo co na rynek trafił Pixel 10, a w sieci już huczy od plotek na temat jego następcy. Najnowszy i niezwykle istotny przeciek sugeruje, że w przyszłorocznym Pixelu 11 Google planuje dokonać kluczowej zmiany.
Wsparciem dla procesora Tensor G6 ma być modem 5G dostarczony przez MediaTek, co oznaczałoby koniec wieloletniej zależności od Samsunga w tym kluczowym komponencie.
Informacje, opublikowane przez leakera znanego jako „Mystic Leaks”, wskazują, że Google prowadzi już „wczesne wewnętrzne testy” modemu MediaTek M90 w prototypach Pixela 11. Na dowód opublikowano zrzut ekranu z wiersza poleceń, który ujawnia nową wersję oprogramowania modemu oraz nową nazwę kodową bootloadera – „spacecraft”. Warto przypomnieć, że plotki o przejściu na modemy MediaTek pojawiały się już przy okazji Pixela 10, ale ostatecznie nie znalazły one potwierdzenia. Tym razem dowody wydają się znacznie mocniejsze.

To nowoczesna jednostka oferująca szczytową prędkość pobierania do 12 Gb/s, wsparcie dla dwóch aktywnych kart SIM 5G oraz łączność satelitarną, którą Google musi utrzymać w swoich flagowcach. Co najważniejsze z perspektywy użytkownika, MediaTek deklaruje, że dzięki optymalizacjom AI, nowy modem zużywa o 18% mniej energii niż poprzednie generacje, co może przełożyć się na dłuższy czas pracy na baterii.
Decyzja o zmianie dostawcy modemu to kolejny, wyraźny krok Google w stronę uniezależnienia się od technologii Samsunga. Chociaż modemy Exynos 5400i w Pixelach 9 i 10 rozwiązały większość problemów z przegrzewaniem znanych z wcześniejszych generacji, Google konsekwentnie dywersyfikuje swój łańcuch dostaw. Przejście na modem MediaTek idealnie wpisuje się w ten trend, zwłaszcza że sam procesor Tensor G6 (o nazwie kodowej Malibu) również ma być produkowany już nie przez Samsunga, a przez jego największego konkurenta – TSMC, w nowoczesnym procesie technologicznym 3 nm lub nawet 2 nm.
Dla użytkowników potencjalna zmiana może przynieść korzyści w postaci lepszej wydajności energetycznej i stabilności połączenia. Dla branży jest to jednak sygnał o zaciętej walce na rynku półprzewodników, w której MediaTek zdobywa kolejny, niezwykle prestiżowy kontrakt kosztem Samsunga.
