  1. #GazaSoupKitchen Update

    April 5, 2026 by #HaniAlmadhoun, Organizer

"Today is my birthday, and I wanted to share this note with you.

    This week felt special.

We expanded. Two new kitchens came online—one in the south, in #Rafah, along the coast, in that narrow sliver of land that Palestinians in Gaza can still access. The other is in central Gaza, in the Middle Area, serving a camp known as #AlQuds.

People are grateful—not just for the meals, but for the fact that we are still here. Many initiatives and charities slowed down or closed after Ramadan. We didn’t.

This brings us to fifteen kitchens in operation, along with two additional contracted sites supporting hospital meal programs. We are now covering four hospitals, from #KhanYounes to #GazaCity. Because of you, we are not just reacting—we are positioned to do more, and to keep showing up.

Our water trucks are still moving, delivering fresh drinking water to communities that have nowhere else to turn. Our two learning centers continue to grow, with one now serving more than fifty students—children holding on to some sense of normalcy.

On the ground, our team has doubled down. We’ve increased field visits and continued distributing modified food parcels directly to tents and shelters.

    Today, we also reopened registration.

We received requests from two groups. The first: new families who have not benefited from our work before. We registered 750 families, though after verification, we expect to serve around 500.

The second: 3,000 families signed up for a lighter food parcel. A small package—but for many, it matters.

I don’t think any of us imagined we would be here this long.

The absence of headlines does not mean the absence of suffering. The trauma continues. The conditions persist. And people are still being lost—every day. It is deeply unfair.

But here’s what I hold on to: you and I are doing something. It may feel small in the face of so much, but it is real. It is constant. And it reaches people who would otherwise be left with nothing.

In more personal news, I’ve submitted a manuscript to several publishing houses. It’s a book about the Gaza Soup Kitchen—our losses, the community we’ve built together, and the relief efforts you’ve made possible. It will take time, and I don’t expect much financially from it, but it feels important to document this chapter—truthfully and with care. If any of you are connected to literary agents or publishers, I would be grateful for a conversation.

I hope those of you who observed Passover or Easter found moments of peace and reflection as this holy season comes to a close.

Thank you for standing with us—not just in moments of urgency, but in the long, quiet stretch that follows.

    We are still here.

    In solidarity,
    Hani"

  2. 'We Are Sailing to #Cuba': #Humanitarian Coalition Announces #Flotilla to Break US Blockade | Common Dreams

“Together, we can break the siege, save lives, and stand up for the cause of Cuban self-determination,” said the mission’s organizers.

by Brett Wilkins, Feb 12, 2026

"Members of #ProgressiveInternational, #CodePink, and other #DirectAction and advocacy groups plan to set sail for Cuba next month in the #NuestraAmérica—or #OurAmerica—Flotilla, which they said is inspired by the #GlobalSumud Flotilla missions to break Israel’s illegal blockade of Gaza amid the ongoing genocide in the Palestinian exclave."

  3. #GazaSoupKitchen Update

    January 8, 2026 by #HaniAlmadhoun, Organizer

"Dear friends, allies, and partners in good,

In the last two days of 2025, the #Gaza Soup Kitchen opened its 14th location. Since then, it has been running strong. And yet, every time I think about expanding kitchens in Gaza, I don’t feel a sense of achievement. It feels like a setback for humanity.

Every meal we serve matters—but the growth of these kitchens is a painful measure of how far things have fallen. No amount of coordination, care, or sacrifice can change the truth: this is emergency survival, not dignity.

I keep coming back to the real goal we’ve always had: not to add kitchens, but to close them. Success, to me, looks like people back in their homes, cooking for their children, rather than standing in line for a meal.

What worries me most is the next generation. Children growing up in aid lines instead of classrooms, learning to ration far too early. I think of the Nakba generation, who built lives and institutions out of ruins. That same #Palestinian spirit is here—but under enormous strain. Resilience isn’t endless, and it shouldn’t be romanticized. People were never meant to live like this.

And yet, that spirit persists—in neighbors sharing crumbs, teachers refusing to stop teaching, people showing up for each other when almost nothing remains. That matters. I feel it deeply.

But care alone is not enough. Soup kitchens are a bridge, not a future. The true measure of progress isn’t how well we manage hunger, but how soon we make it unnecessary.

    Our Impact Today

We are serving communities across the #GazaStrip—from #KhanYounes in the south to #BeitLahia in the north. Our kitchens serve real, edible meals—not factory food lacking taste or flavor.

We now scale to serve up to 15,000 families per week.

This week, distributions included winter clothing, baby milk and diapers, food parcels, and hygiene and cleaning supplies.

Our most effective team is in #GazaCity.

The middle-area team in #DeirElBalah is facing space challenges and newer staff, but they are accelerating their distributions and solving logistical issues.

In addition to serving families who register online:

30% of our work happens outside the registration system, with teams dispatched daily to reach disconnected communities.

Water trucks continue to roll daily—about ten per day.

The medical point in Mashrou’ Beit Lahia sees 60–80 patients a day.

The classroom in Khan Younes is teaching 30 children daily, and we are preparing to launch an orphan learning center in Gaza City within two weeks.

    Looking Forward

Ramadan is just weeks away, and we’re concerned that #Israel may limit the number of trucks again, as announced yesterday. This would affect #FoodAccess and increase costs—but for now, we are holding off from buying everything in the market prematurely.

What helps us most is sharing our videos, stories, and updates—engaging, commenting, and spreading awareness. If you can, consider becoming a monthly donor.

    To give context:

Our daily operational costs have risen from $15,000/day to $30,000/day.

This page used to average $5,000/day in donations, now it’s under $2,000/day.

I hate asking for money, but as our team’s response grows, donations are not keeping pace. Your support is critical, and I hope you can help us think creatively about the future.

Thank you for being here. For every crumb shared, every child fed, and every story told, your partnership matters.

    With deep gratitude,
    Hani
    Gaza Soup Kitchen

    P. S. In other news, Israel hit two schools today where we run kitchens, there has been injuries and at least one fatality which is tragic, our staff are unharmed as they had just washed up and left for the day."

  5. [LIVE] #NationalDayOfMourning 2025, (27 November 25 @ 12pm ET)

"Since 1970, Indigenous people & their allies have gathered at noon on Cole's Hill in Plymouth to commemorate a National Day of Mourning on the US Thanksgiving holiday. Many Native people do not celebrate the arrival of the Pilgrims & other European settlers. Thanksgiving Day is a reminder of the genocide of millions of Native people, the theft of Native lands and the erasure of Native cultures. Participants in National Day of Mourning honor Indigenous ancestors and Native resilience. It is a day of remembrance and spiritual connection, as well as a protest against the racism and oppression that Indigenous people continue to experience worldwide."

  7. Supporters rally for #ProPalestinian #protesters arrested in #PortlandME

    Aysia Reed,WGME
    Thu, July 10th 2025

PORTLAND, Maine (WGME) -- "The #MaineCoalitionForPalestine held a rally on Thursday outside of the Cumberland County Courthouse ahead of the criminal court arraignment of pro-Palestinian protesters who were arrested in Portland in May.

"Twenty protesters, ages 22 through 87, were arrested in May for blocking Commercial Street.

"Ten of those protesters were arraigned on Thursday morning while the remaining 10 will be arraigned later this month.

"The Maine Coalition for Palestine says they were bringing attention to the #genocide in #Gaza.

"The protesters were charged with class E misdemeanors for obstructing a public way.

"One of the people taken away in handcuffs was #BobSchaible, who's in his 80s [87 to be exact].

"He says this was his first time being arrested and said he would do it all over again to inspire action to get humanitarian aid to Gaza.

" 'Congress has to take a stand. We want the Portland people, more of them, to know what is happening,' Schaible said.

"Maine Voices for Palestinian Rights Chair Abby Fuller helped organize the protest in May.

" 'We have written our congressional representatives, we've called them, we've held rallies in the streets, we've done all kinds of things -- everything we can think of. And our government has not changed its policy of support for Israel,' Fuller said.

"Fuller was also arrested and charged with obstructing a public way."

  8. #ProPalestinian activists rally outside #PortlandME courthouse to support fellow #protesters

Morgan Womack, Portland Press Herald, Maine
    Thu, July 10, 2025

Jul. 10—"A group of pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered outside the #CumberlandCountyCourthouse on Thursday morning ahead of a court hearing for their peers who were arrested at a protest in May.

"More than a dozen people rallied with signs and a #PalestinianFlag as 10 people — half of the group that was previously arrested — awaited their arraignments. During their hearings, they each pleaded not guilty to one count of #obstructing a public way. The rest of the group will appear in court at a later date, the protesters said.

"Jamila Levasseur, 70, of #WaldoME, was one of the 20 people arrested in Portland on May 21 after police accused them of blocking the intersection of Commercial and Pearl streets near the U.S. Custom House. She said at the time that she'd be arrested as many times as necessary to bring attention to the widespread #starvation and ongoing #Israeli airstrikes in #Gaza.

"When appearing at the stand, Levasseur told District Court Judge Jed French that she was 'protesting against #genocide in #Gaza' before entering her not-guilty plea. She referenced Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin #Netanyahu's recent talks with President Donald #Trump, recognizing their joint strikes on #Iran and discussing plans for a 60-day #ceasefire that would halt Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza.

" 'Those are the #WarCriminals,' Levasseur said. 'We're not criminals.'

"Levasseur said she couldn't have anticipated that the war would still be going on 21 months after it began. She said she's thankful that a group of attorneys stepped forward to represent the protesters for free, and that the May demonstration in the Old Port attracted a new, larger crowd of supporters.

" 'More and more people are waking up, learning what's going on, horrified, and want to do something,' Levasseur said. 'The people we were arrested with, I didn't even know them all when we were arrested. ... It's not the usual suspects. It's just more ordinary people.'

"Levasseur and #AbigailFuller, 65, of Portland, were also arrested at a February 2024 protest on Franklin Street for obstructing a public way. Their charges in those cases have since been dropped.

"Fuller, who is also a lecturer at the University of Southern Maine, said she felt supported by the group of people outside the courthouse while walking into her arraignment. She pleaded not guilty and also told the judge she was protesting genocide when she was arrested.

" 'It feels good to be starting the process,' Fuller said. 'The Maine courts system takes a really long time, often, to get through, but this is the first step.'

"Fuller said she appreciates seeing new faces at protests, especially as airstrikes and shootings in the #GazaStrip continue, killing people attempting to receive #HumanitarianAid.

" 'Unfortunately, Palestinian deaths are not on the front pages of the newspaper anymore,' Fuller said. 'So, we're trying to keep that in the public eye.' "

  9. #Protesters rally at #PortlandME Jetport against #AveloAirlines' #ICEDeportation flights

    July 14, 2025

PORTLAND, Maine (WGME) -- "A group gathered outside the Portland Jetport on Saturday to rally against Avelo Airlines for working with ICE.

"Since May, the airline has been carrying out deportation flights in Arizona for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

"Shortly after starting their flights for ICE, #Avelo began offering nonstop flights between #NewHavenCT, and Portland.

" 'Whether or not it’s a public airport, we don't believe that anyone who’s violating anyone else’s #HumanRights, any business should be allowed to continue and be allowed to receive incentives from the airport,' said Rachel Weinstein, a protester at the #PortlandJetport.

"A spokesperson for Avelo says their #HomelandSecurity charters are only based out of Arizona and are not affiliated with Portland Jetport commercial services."

    #Humanitiarian Relief for #Gaza

    Tuesday, July 8, 2025
    7:00 PM to 9:00 PM

    Novel, Portland
    643 Congress Street
    Portland, ME, 04101
    United States

"We are raising funds for lifesaving convoys bringing food, water, and medical supplies directly to families in Gaza. The situation is urgent. The need is real. If you're in a position to give, please consider donating to this grassroots effort.

"One way of resisting the cruelty and chaos of the genocide in Gaza is to gather, attempt to process what’s happening, and raise a boatload of money to send to The Center for Freedom and Justice, a Palestinian non-profit that is coordinating food convoys into Gaza. Please join your neighbors, friends, and partners at Novel for an evening of expression, reflection, and activism, featuring short readings by writers and community leaders, as well as a number of raffles. Our goal is simple: to raise as much money as we can to send to the people who need it most.

"There will be music, art, books, and donated items for raffle from your favorite Maine vendors (#PaperTiger, #BreadAndFriends, Waterstruck, Washington Baths, original art by James Foley and Jamie Hogan, and much more!) —all in support of humanitarian relief for Gaza. It will be a space for grief, for action, for love, and for hope. Spoken words by #LilyKing, #ZahirJanmohamed, #KarenOrtiz, #RebeccaTurkewitz, #ChelseaConaboy, #OnneshaRoychoudhuri, #ArisaWhite and more!

"Please come if you can. Please give if you can. And if you can’t do either, please help us spread the word.

"Because silence isn’t neutrality. And small acts, when joined together, can become lifelines.

"We all do better when we all do better."

Police issue warning over #PalestineAction protests after group proscribed as terrorist organisation

Demonstrators expressing support for Palestine Action could be jailed for 14 years

    by Archie Mitchell
    Saturday 05 July 2025 11:52 BST

"The police have warned protesters against demonstrating in favour of Palestine Action after it was proscribed as a terrorist group by the government.

"#Protesters are planning to gather in #ParliamentSquare on Saturday holding signs supporting Palestine Action, according to campaign group #DefendOurJuries.

"In a letter to Yvette Cooper, protesters said: 'We do not wish to go to prison or to be branded with a terrorism conviction. But we refuse to be cowed into silence by your order.'

"But, ahead of the planned demonstration, the Metropolitan Police said the proscription means expressing support for the group is now a criminal offence in the UK."

  16. #Palestinian Filmmaker Demands End to US-Backed '#EthnicCleansing' of #Gaza, #WestBank in Oscar Speech

"There is a different path, a political solution without #EthnicSupremacy," said Israeli filmmaker Yuval Abraham. "The foreign policy in this country is helping to block this path."

by Julia Conley, Mar 03, 2025

"The winner of the 2025 #AcademyAward for Best Documentary Feature Film has been unable to obtain distribution in #theaters or on #StreamingPlatforms in the U.S.—despite being the highest-grossing Oscar-nominated documentary in the rest of the world—but American viewers were able to hear directly from its filmmakers on Sunday night in speeches that condemned the U.S.-backed 'ethnic cleansing' of Palestinians.

"The directors behind #NoOtherLand, Israeli journalist #YuvalAbraham and Palestinian activist and lawyer #BaselAdra, accepted the Oscar while speaking out about the subject matter of their film, which was filmed between 2019-23, before Israel began its bombardment of Gaza in retaliation for a Hamas-led attack.

"'When I look at Basel, I see my brother, but we are not equal,' Abraham said. 'We live under a regime where I enjoy freedom under civil law, and where he is governed by military laws.'

"Adra and Abraham made the film to tell the story of #MasaferYatta, a collection of towns in the occupied #WestBank where Adra lives and where Israeli authorities and settlers have been attacking and evicting residents for years—claiming Israel has a right to use the land for a military training facility. The film chronicles Israeli soliders' killing of Adra's brother and their attacks on West Bank communities by demolishing homes, tearing down playgrounds, and filling water wells with cement so Palestinians cannot rebuild."

  17. #NoOtherLand,’ an #Israeli-#Palestinian collaboration, wins Oscar for best documentary

    By HANNAH SCHOENBAUM
    Updated 11:51 PM EST, March 2, 2025

LOS ANGELES (AP) — "'No Other Land,' the story of Palestinian activists fighting to protect their communities from demolition by the Israeli military, won the Oscar for best documentary on Sunday.

"The collaboration between Israeli and Palestinian filmmakers follows activist #BaselAdra as he risks arrest to document the destruction of his hometown at the southern edge of the West Bank, which Israeli soldiers are tearing down to use as a military training zone. Adra’s pleas fall on deaf ears until he befriends a Jewish Israeli journalist who helps him amplify his story.

"'We made this film as Palestinians and Israelis because, together, our voices are stronger,' said Israeli journalist and filmmaker #YuvalAbraham. He used his acceptance speech to call out his country’s government for what he called 'the atrocious destruction of Gaza and its people.' And he urged Hamas to release all Israeli hostages.

"'No Other Land' came into the night a top contender after a successful run on the film festival circuit. It did not, however, find a U.S. distributor after being picked up for distribution in 24 countries. For the Oscar, it beat out 'Porcelain War,' 'Sugarcane,' 'Black Box Diaries' and 'Soundtrack to a Coup d’État.'

"The documentary was filmed over four years between 2019 and 2023, wrapping production days before Hamas launched its deadly Oct. 7, 2023 attack on Israel that started the war in Gaza."

  19. The #FarRight Group Building a List of Pro-Palestine Activists to Deport

#BetarUS said it has shared with the Trump administration a list of the “names of hundreds of terror supporters.”

"This conflation of speech critical to #Israel with #antisemitism or support of Hamas will do little to protect Jews in the United States from hate, said #JonahRubin, with #JewishVoiceForPeace, a progressive #JewishAmerican group that advocates for #Palestinian #HumanRights."

    Jonah Valdez
    February 6 2025

"The premise behind Trump’s more recent order is rooted in #ProjectEsther: a treatise by the authors of #Project2025. The document was billed as 'a blueprint to counter antisemitism' and offered strategies to target and silence critics of Israel, including deportation. A fact sheet about the executive order related by the Trump administration mirrored language from Project Esther and laid bare the order’s intent to 'cancel the student visas of all Hamas sympathizers on college campuses,' vowing to deport 'all the resident aliens who joined in the pro-jihadist protests.'

"Such ideas are increasingly gaining purchase in conservative discourse. Pledges to deport supporters of Palestinian rights were a key part of the Republican Party’s platform. A congressional bill introduced last May called for similar measures.

"#Academia is a key focus of Project Esther and Trump’s executive orders. While the most recent order instructs all agencies within the executive branch to take part in the crackdown, it encourages #surveillance in specific areas, such as #universities and even K-12 schools, where administrators are being told to monitor and report #InternationalStudents for possible deportation.

"On Monday, the Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights launched investigations into five schools — #ColumbiaUniversity; #UCLABerkley; #NorthwesternUniversity; #UniversityOfMinnesota, Twin Cities; and #PortlandStateUniversity — for #antisemitism, the first use of the executive order.

"'Americans and college students that visit the United States should be able to protest the #Israeli government’s human rights violations in the same way that the United United Nations, the International Criminal Court [#ICC], #AmnestyInternational, #HumanRightsWatch, and other respected institutions have for the past several years, without fear of retaliation,' said Robert McCaw, a leader with the Council on American-Islamic Relations who heads the government affairs department. He decried the order’s fact sheet of peddling anti-Muslim terms such as 'pro-Jihad.'"

"Trump’s efforts have inspired a grassroots campaign to identify possible targets for deportation. On #SocialMedia, groups such as #MothersAgainstCollegeAntisemitism and the #ChicagoJewishAlliance have shared links to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement tip line and called on people to report 'foreign students and faculty who support Hamas' and 'students on visas who are suspected of engaging in pro-terror activities,' respectively."

  20. Hot meals 4 Starved #Palestinian Kids in #NorthGaza

Update on January 10, 2025 by #HaniAlmadhoun, Organizer

    "Dear Supporters,

Another week has passed, and I’m back with updates from the ground in #Gaza. While there’s talk of a ceasefire deal, I believe it’s little more than a gimmick—a distraction used to prolong suffering while giving political players the chance to pat themselves on the back. As the powerful negotiate in luxury, the people of Gaza endure relentless hardship—cold, hungry, and unsafe. Just my two cents.

Before diving into Gaza updates, I want to express solidarity with the people of California who are facing devastating wildfires. My heart goes out to those who have lost their homes and livelihoods.

Now, to the heart of the matter: the incredible work your generosity has made possible.

    Soup Kitchens: Staying Strong

Our six soup kitchen locations remain fully operational, serving at capacity despite the immense challenges. We’ve also increased drinking water deliveries to six trucks daily, ensuring more families have access to clean water.

    Here’s what’s happening across Gaza:

    Khan Younes:
Crowds have grown significantly, and the team has stepped up, adding more pots to meet the need. Their food is delicious, their work tireless, and their photos uplifting. This location is now a hub of activity with three initiatives: the soup kitchen, the classroom, and the daily water deliveries. They’ve even added staff to enhance flavors and expand their impact.

    Al Zawaydah:
This is our largest location, and the team here is nothing short of heroic. They cook every day, ensuring meals are hearty and nutritious by investing in extra vegetables. They’ve introduced a patron card system that guarantees meals while keeping capacity for new faces. It’s a well-oiled machine, driven by compassion.

    Beach Camp:
Chef Faten and her team are doing wonders here. Five days a week, they bake savory pies, mini pizzas, sweet breads, and pastries. Fridays are reserved for rice dishes, a staple that also sustains three other locations in North Gaza, including the one providing meals for the Arab Baptist Hospital.

    Al Shaikh Radwan:
Our northernmost location came under fire this week, with bullets landing alarmingly close to the cooking pots. It gave the crew a scare, but they soldiered on. Their courage inspires us all.

    Hospital Deliveries:
Chef Kabar and his team prepare meals daily for the Arab Baptist Hospital, with Omar and Fatema ensuring these hot meals are delivered safely. Their dedication makes us so proud.

    What’s Next?

I often ask myself: How can we do more? What else can we do? Sometimes we have answers; other times, we don’t. What’s certain is that our work remains critical. From distributing blankets, classroom supplies, to hygiene kits and care packages in both North and South Gaza, every dollar you donate is stretched to serve the community.

We need more resources, yes. And while moving funds into Gaza is a constant challenge, we persist, finding ways to get resources into the hands of our courageous crews who make all this magic happen.

    How Can You Help?

Share and Engage: Social media platforms are slowing us down, and we need your help to amplify our stories. Share, engage, and tag us—it makes a bigger difference than you might think.

Boycott and Advocate: Support ethical companies and continue advocating for peace with justice.

Keep Gaza in Your Prayers: Your prayers and well wishes matter.

Thank you for being such incredible allies. Your generosity keeps the Gaza Soup Kitchen alive, and your support inspires us to keep going. Together, we’re making a tangible difference.

    With gratitude and hope,
    Hani
    Gaza Soup Kitchen Team"

  21. Surviving war and #HIV: #Queer, HIV-Positive, and Running Out of Medication in #Gaza

by Afeef Nessouli, Steven W. Thrasher, January 13 2025

"Life in #NorthernGaza is precarious enough without having to worry about #AIDS. Airstrikes and ground raids are a constant threat that keep people from leaving their homes to find food. 'We have to conserve,' said E.S., a 27-year-old who lives with his mother and younger brother in the Tel al-Hawa neighborhood in southwest Gaza City. 'People are fighting each other to get the aid boxes.'

"And then there’s the issue of medication.

"'My doctor told me that the antiretrovirals have been consumed completely and there is nothing left in store,' said E.S., who is HIV-positive and agreed to speak with The Intercept using a pseudonym to avoid community stigma and targeting by the Israeli authorities.

"He needs #tenofovir, a common HIV medication, and #lopinavir / #ritonavir, a much more rarely prescribed one. At times, E.S. has had so little left that he dangerously began rationing his pills by skipping morning doses. 'There are no more supplies coming in or there hasn’t been any supplies at all coming in to the south or to the north,' he typed in a direct message. While Israel has denied blocking medication, international aid groups like #Glia have told The Intercept that HIV medication specifically has been blocked from entering the Gaza strip.

"Without these medications, E.S. — who already uses a walker for mobility — would see his health deteriorate rapidly. Within a short span of time, he would begin to move even more slowly, and he might lose the ability to walk altogether. With soldiers mandating mass displacement and sniping Palestinians as they try to evacuate, this could mean a death sentence.

"As Israel’s war on Gaza rages around him, E.S. has spent most of his time at home with his two cats. While many of his neighbors moved south to Rafah, he stayed put with his brother and mother, who is a cancer survivor. His limited mobility, the result of a viral infection exacerbated by HIV, made leaving more dangerous than staying.

"So they chose to stay north — despite warnings from the occupation military to evacuate. His home, while offering more protection than a tent, hasn’t exactly been safe: 'I saw people get sniped right across the street from me. It was a family of five trying to cross the road after they were ordered to evacuate their building before it was bombed.' He said the parents died and the children survived.

"E.S. used to get his medication from Al Rimal Martyrs Clinic, but it was evacuated and then reinhabited by displaced Palestinians.

"'Now, with the genocide happening, I fear not only my health deteriorating, but also how my family will respond,' he wrote. For years, his family didn’t acknowledge his HIV status; now he worries that his condition will be a liability for them."

  22. So, fracturing amongst the various environmental and social justice groups has been going on as long as I've been in the movement. But there have always been those (like myself and some of my colleagues in #EarthFirst and the #ThomasMortonAlliance and #AIM) that saw #HumanRights abuses and #EnvironmentalPollution as being connected -- and that #CorporateGreed was the main driver of most of the issues facing our planet!

Hear Me Out: In 2025, Climate Activists Should Spend Less Time on Climate

If you’re a climate activist who doesn’t know what to do for the next four years, the answer is remarkably simple: Join other movements.

“[Climate is] not more urgent than kids being ripped away from their families and dying in the desert—anyone who tries to win that argument is monstrous themselves. We either merge, join forces, or we lose,” #NaomiKlein, 2019.

    Sophie Shepherd
    Jan 09, 2025, Common Dreams

"Yet my optimism arises out of a different trend in the climate movement: Climate activists are (finally) showing up for other movements.

"Historically, the climate movement has attempted to isolate itself from other political and social issues, arguing that climate policy is 'just science.' This majority-white movement has failed to see that fossil fuel emissions are part of a larger history of the Global North #colonizing and exploiting both people and the planet for decades. The climate crisis is a symptom of a broader exploitative system. To change that system, we need a united left that will fight for all people—not just those who identify as environmentalists.

"In 2020, climate activists were rightfully berated for not showing up enough for the #BlackLivesMatter movement. Thankfully, I think many climate activists heard that message because today, they have come out in droves for #Palestine.

"Many of the college students who organized campus encampments last spring to urge their school administrators to divest from Israel and the U.S. imperial war machine were students who had previously organized for climate justice. I witnessed this firsthand at the Claremont Colleges when I was a senior: The student organizations demanding fossil fuel divestment fell to the wayside as the crisis in Gaza intensified. Globally, many climate organizations chose to speak out and take direct action to call for a cease-fire in Gaza.

"But none of these climate activists had stopped caring about the climate. In fact, they often pointed out that Israel’s actions were not just #genocide, but #ecocide as well. The onslaught of #bombs dropped on Gaza will contaminate the soil and groundwater in the region for decades. And the destruction has produced at least 54.5 million tons of carbon dioxide, equal to the annual emissions of 16 coal-fired power plants.

"Climate activists cannot claim to fight for a just future and stay silent about genocide. 'If we, as climate activists, aren’t able to see and speak up against the current #marginalization and oppression and killing of people today, then I don’t think we should be able to call ourselves #climatejustice [activists],' climate champion #GretaThunberg told Al Jazeera in early December 2024.

"As Trump prepares to enter the White House, we will undoubtedly see more people oppressed and killed. Among the many groups who are vulnerable under his administration are undocumented immigrants, whom Trump has vowed to round up and deport.

"Migrant justice has long been intertwined with climate justice. As climate change makes many areas around the world uninhabitable, climate refugees have no choice but to leave their home.

In response to Trump’s election, climate organizers Jeff Ordower and Ahmed Gaya called on their fellow activists to bring their experiences of shutting down pipelines and coal plants to fight the incarceration and deportation we can expect under Trump. Climate activists should answer this call: The struggles for migrant justice and climate justice are intertwined, and we must meet the needs of the current moment.

"'[Climate is] not more urgent than kids being ripped away from their families and dying in the desert—anyone who tries to win that argument is monstrous themselves. We either merge, join forces, or we lose,' writer and activist Naomi Klein said in 2019.

"With Trump as president, things will undoubtedly get worse before they get better. We need to build a strong left to fight fascism during Trump’s presidency and to build a just green future in its aftermath. To do so, climate activists must put their words into action when they say they fight for every living being."

  27. Behind #Israel’s ‘end game’ for #Gaza: Theft of #OffshoreGas reserves

    By Betsey Piette
    November 14, 2023

"In 1999, #BritishGas (BG) discovered the existence of natural gas in the #GazaMarineFields, 20 nautical miles off the coast of Gaza, at a depth of 610 meters below the surface. Further exploration by BG through two successful wells — Gaza Marine 1 and Gaza Marine 2 — determined the field could contain up to 1 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. (EgyptOil-Gas.com, April 5, 2018)

    [Fast forward to 2022...]

"On June 18, [2022], Israel gave preliminary approval for the development of a gas field off the coast of Gaza, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claiming progress would hinge on 'preserving the State of Israel’s security and diplomatic needs' and coordination with the Palestinian Authority and neighboring Egypt. At the same time, Hamas official Ismail Rudwan told Reuters: 'We reaffirm that our people in Gaza have the rights to their natural resources.'

"Two months before Oct. 7, [2023], the Pentagon began building a $35.8 million troop facility in Israel’s #NegevDesert, 20 miles from Gaza, allegedly as a radar site to monitor for missile attacks on Israel. The base is part of a 'secret' U.S. military presence in Israel. (The Intercept, Oct. 27)

"Since Oct. 7, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has made it clear that Israel intends to kill as many Palestinians as possible in order to pressure others to leave the Gaza Strip and move to the Sinai in Egypt.

"Netanyahu has been adamant in refusing to order a cease-fire to let in aid to stop the horrific genocide being carried out in Gaza.

"The people of Gaza are well aware, as their grandparents experienced with the 1948 Nakba, that once Israelis forcefully remove Palestinians from Palestinian land, returning is a near impossibility.

"Israel’s genocidal war on Palestinians has not stopped the Israeli regime’s plans for further oil and gas exploration. On Oct. 29, Israel announced that it awarded 12 licenses for exploring additional offshore natural gas fields to six companies, including #BritishPetroleum and Italian energy giant #Eni. These awards show that Israel has no intention of letting the genocide it is carrying out against Gaza’s people interfere with its ongoing theft of Palestinian resources."

  29. #Israel helps former soldier leave #Brazil over investigation into alleged #WarCrimes in #Gaza

By SAM MEDNICK and WAFAA SHURAFA, January 5, 2025

JERUSALEM (AP) — "Israel has helped a former soldier leave Brazil after legal action was initiated against him by a group accusing Israelis of war crimes in the Gaza Strip based in part on soldiers’ #SocialMediaPosts.

"Israel’s Foreign Ministry on Sunday said it had helped the former soldier safely leave Brazil on a commercial flight after what it described as 'anti-Israel elements' sought an investigation last week. It warned Israelis against posting on social media about their military service.

"The #HindRajabFoundation, named for a 5-year-old Palestinian girl killed in Gaza, said Brazilian authorities had launched an investigation into the soldier after it filed a complaint based on video footage, geolocation data and photographs showing him taking part in the demolition of civilian homes.

"The foundation described the move as a 'pivotal step toward accountability for crimes committed in Gaza' during nearly 15 months of war.

"There was no immediate comment from Brazilian authorities. Brazilian media reported Saturday that the investigation was ordered by an on-call federal judge in Brazil’s Federal District. The decision was issued on Dec. 30 but first reported over the weekend."

  30. #HealthWorkers Plan #GlobalDayOfAction to Demand 'End to the #Genocide in #Gaza' - Monday, January 6th, 2025

"After witnessing 15 months of relentless violence and destruction in Gaza, we can no longer carry on as if everything is normal," said organizer #DoctorsAgainstGenocide.

    Brett Wilkins
    Jan 03, 2025

"As Israel's 15-month annihilation of Gaza continues with intensified attacks on medical infrastructure and workers, an international coalition of advocacy groups is planning a #SickFromGenocide global day of action on Monday 'to take a stand against the targeted attacks on healthcare.'

"Organizer Doctors Against Genocide (#DAG) and co-sponsors including #HealthcareWorkersForPalestine, #PalestinianYouthMovement, #DoNoHarmCoalition, #LaborForPalestine, #JewishVoiceForPeace Health Advisory Council, and others are calling on healthcare workers around the world to take a day of mental health leave 'to reflect on the immense moral injury of funding a genocide and engage the most important aspect of treatment: publicly demanding an end to the genocide in Gaza.'

"Monday's day of action is set to include a '#SickFromGenocide' global vigil and pop-up clinics in cities across the United States, whose government gives Israel billions of dollars in weapons support each year.

"'For 15 months, we have watched in horror as children and families have been obliterated by unrelenting attacks,' DAG said in a statement Friday. 'Hospitals, the bedrock of lifesaving care, have been turned into death traps. The recent bombing and burning of #KamalAdwanHospital and the arrest of our colleague, the pediatrician Dr. #HussamAbuSafiya, exemplify the deliberate targeting of healthcare workers and facilities—tactics designed to accelerate the annihilation and forced displacement of the Palestinian people in Gaza.'"

  31. Hot meals 4 Starved #Palestinian Kids in #NorthGaza

Update on January 3, 2025 by #HaniAlmadhoun, Organizer

"Thank you for being here with us and standing in solidarity. It's deeply troubling that, in 2025, we are still needed, and even more devastating that #Gaza remains under relentless military assault. Just yesterday, 69 defenseless #Palestinians lost their lives to Israeli violence. Yet, we press on, because giving up is not an option.

"Our winterization efforts are expanding across Gaza through several initiatives. In #NorthGaza, we are distributing heavy blankets—updates on this will be shared later today on social media. Yesterday in #KhanYounes, we handed out hats and gloves to the students in our classroom led by Ms. Fatma. These small but crucial interventions are aimed at helping families cope with the brutal winter. Still, the images of people drenched and freezing in the rain are heart-wrenching, especially knowing that at least seven babies have succumbed to the cold. It’s overwhelming, but we refuse to stop. In addition to cooking daily meals—stews and soups—we’re challenging ourselves to find new ways to keep people warm. While we wish we could provide tents or tarps to shelter those most vulnerable, for now, we are focused on winter clothes and blankets. Each blanket costs about $40, and we’ve sourced the heaviest kind available. We also hope to find sleeping bags soon.

"Before diving into more updates, I want to share some exciting news. Slate Magazine just published a podcast interview with me, where I talk about #UNRWA, the #GazaSoupKitchen, and #ChefMahmoud’s inspiring contributions. I hope you get a chance to give it a listen—it’s a glimpse into the work we’re doing and the people behind it."

  32. Hot meals 4 Starved #Palestinian Kids in #NorthGaza

Update on December 26th, 2024 by #HaniAlmadhoun, Organizer

    "Dear Comrades,

As we approach the end of another year, we are met with the painful reality that for #Palestinians, the years 2023, 2024, and likely 2025 will remain marked by suffering, #starvation, and invisibility. Despite undeniable evidence, even from U.S. government reports acknowledging famine in North Gaza, influential figures like the U.S. ambassador to Israel have dismissed these truths. For us, the famine is not a distant statistic — it is our daily reality at the Gaza Soup Kitchen.

As the co-founder of this initiative, I witness firsthand the heart-wrenching struggles of families who come to our four locations in North Gaza seeking a hot meal. And while we stretch every resource to serve everyone who shows up, there are still times when we have to send people home empty-handed. It breaks our spirits — not only mine but also those of the chefs and volunteers, who feel this injustice deeply because they, too, live it.

But we refuse to stop. We expand because we must. This week alone, we added 150 families to our daily roster across North Gaza and Khan Younes. By simply adding more rice to our pots, we’ve been able to feed 25 additional families in one location.

As the year comes to a close, here’s where we stand:

North Gaza Operations: We now have four active locations: one in Beach Camp, one in Al Shaikh Radwan, and two in Al Naser. At one of the Al Naser kitchens, we prepare and deliver 140 meals daily for hospital patients, ensuring each meal serves at least two individuals. Families sheltering nearby also receive meals, and if a child shows up empty-handed, our chefs find a way to send them home with food.

Khan Younes Revival: Our Khan Younes kitchen has been reinvigorated, now serving over 200 families daily, primarily displaced families from Al Mawasy. The team has been working tirelessly to refine their operations, and their excitement is contagious. They also deliver water every morning, a vital service for the community.

Al Zawaydah Highlights: This week, the Al Zawaydah team introduced a new hot dish and prepared sahlab, a beloved winter drink made with cinnamon and coconut, for 300 children. Adults weren’t left out, and alongside the sahlab, the team served 525 hot meals, cementing this location as our largest operation.

All of this is possible because of you. Every day, we spend between $12,000 and $15,000 to sustain these efforts, ensuring families receive food and dignity. Beyond the daily meals, we also provide one-off food parcels to families in need, quietly addressing gaps where they arise.

This week, a significant stock donation of $25,000 reinforced our ability to dream big for Gaza. The donor's faith in our mission is humbling, and we’ve even developed tools for others to contribute stocks, opening new avenues for support.

To our incredible supporters: thank you. For 10 months, we have answered every call, served every meal, and shared every moment of hope because of your generosity. You’ve helped us make this year a little less unbearable for so many.

But let us not forget the context of our work. Beyond the soup and rice, my heart breaks with every story of a Palestinian journalist targeted, a physician attacked, or an influencer silenced. These stories keep me up at night. They ruin my days and weeks. But through it all, we must continue to find purpose, to act, to resist despair.

This is my purpose. Thank you for walking this journey with the late Chef Mahmoud and me, for believing in our work, and for spreading the word.

Take a moment to look at the pictures from the last 24 hours at the Gaza Soup Kitchen. Each image tells a story of resilience, of community, and of hope.

    With gratitude and resolve,
    Hani
Your friend at the Gaza Soup Kitchen"

  33. #EUOfficials Will Claim Ignorance of #Israel’s #WarCrimes. This Leaked Document Shows What They Knew.

The internal EU document may strip European foreign ministers of “plausible deniability” in #IsraeliWarCrimes in #Gaza, experts said.

    Arthur Neslen, December 23 2024

[...] "Skoog’s analysis laid out evidence from United Nations sources of war crimes by Israel, Hamas, and Hezbollah since October 7, 2023, when around 1,200 people were killed during a Hamas-led attack that prompted Israel’s assault on the Gaza Strip. The U.N. estimates some 45,000 people have died in Gaza since, with more than half estimated to be women and children.

"Though the assessment did not spare Hamas and Hezbollah, much of its strongest language was reserved for the Israel Defense Forces [#IDF].

"'War has rules,' the paper says. 'Given the high level of civilian casualties and human suffering, allegations focus mainly on how duty bearers, including the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF), have seemingly failed to distinguish between civilians and combatants and to take all feasible precautions to protect civilians and civilian objects against the effects of the attacks, in violation of the fundamental principles of #IHL' — international humanitarian law.

"Skoog cites an increased use of 'dehumanizing language' by Israeli political and military leaders, which may 'contribute to evidence of intent' to commit genocide.

"'Incitement to discrimination, hostility or violence — such as that made in statements by Israeli officials — constitutes a serious violation of international human rights Law and may amount to the international crime of incitement to genocide,' the paper says.

"The implications for senior officials from arms-exporting countries to Israel — such as #Germany, #Italy and #France — were not lost on Yanis Varoufakis, the former Greek finance minister and secretary-general of the Democracy in Europe Movement 2025.

"If the International Criminal Court finds Israeli officials guilty of war crimes, #Varoufakis told the Intercept, the very distribution of the report to EU ministers carries significance because the Europeans will not be able plead ignorance.

"'They cannot plausibly deny that they were privy to the facts given the contents of the EU’s special representative’s report that they had a duty to take under consideration,' Varoufakis said. “The world now knows that they knew they were in breach of international law because they were explicitly told so by the EU’s own special representative on human rights. History will judge them harshly. And perhaps so will the ICC.'"

  34. Hot meals 4 Starved #Palestinian Kids in #NorthGaza

Update on December 19, 2024 by #HaniAlmadhoun, Organizer

    "Salam, Shalom, and Hello Everyone,

Thank you for being here, for your compassion, and for all you do to make the world a better place. Right now, there’s no place more deserving of your time and generosity than Gaza, Palestine. Your unwavering support for the Gaza Soup Kitchen and the incredible helpers—both inside and outside Gaza—reminds us that humanity endures, even in the face of unimaginable challenges.

Every day, we see destruction and cruelty, but alongside it, there are moments of hope—moments made possible by people like you who refuse to give up. The Gaza Soup Kitchen began as a response to heartbreak, born from an inability to stand idly by. Since its launch earlier this year, we’ve been humbled by the scale of impact we’ve achieved together.

Looking back over the past 10 months, I often ask myself: Was it worth it? The answer lies in the faces of the children we’ve fed, the families we’ve supported, and the comfort we’ve provided amidst chaos. A meal for a child in March, food parcels in April, classrooms in May, formula for newborns, and so much more—these moments affirm why we do this work, despite the personal cost.

    This Week’s Updates

    1. Expanding to Gaza City Hospitals
This week, we launched a dedicated soup kitchen in Gaza City to provide meals to three major hospitals. So far, we’ve delivered 100–150 meals per day to hospitals like the Baptist Hospital and the Public Service Hospital. The gratitude from medical staff and patients has been overwhelming, and we’re determined to scale up to 500 meals daily. Tomorrow, we’ll prepare 250 meals, taking another step toward that goal.

These meals are delivered by Omar, Fatma, and Yousef, Chef Mahmoud’s children, who wear vests with his insignia. When people see the logo, they offer a small prayer for him—a touching reminder of the legacy we’re building together. This operation is led by Mama Samah, a local chef who has brought her expertise and warmth to this critical mission.

    2. North Gaza Kitchens
In North Gaza, our three locations continue feeding up to 850 families daily. The largest serves 325 families, while the others serve 250–300 each. Despite their own fears and displacement, the crew shows up daily, cooking with heart and serving their neighbors with a smile. This area now has over 23 crew members, including a large number of women at our beach location.

    3. Al Zawaydah Kitchen in the Middle Area
Our largest operation, located in Al Zawaydah, serves 550 families daily. This kitchen is the backbone of our efforts, though its high food costs and demand present challenges. Still, the team continues to innovate, delivering meals that nourish both the body and the spirit. This is also where Hamoudi, a young boy beloved by the community, often visits with his kittens—a reminder of resilience in even the toughest times.

    4. Khan Younes Kitchen
In Khan Younes, we’ve transitioned to daily operations over the past week. Starting with 150 families, we now serve 225. The team has pledged to never turn anyone away, ensuring no one leaves empty-handed. With your help, we’ll sustain this location beyond its initial seed funding from Communities Connections UK, which will soon run out. Daily operations cost $1,000, and the five-member crew is committed to making every dollar count.

    5. Additional Initiatives
Beyond meals, we’re delivering four truckloads of water daily to communities in desperate need, thanks to our partnership with flo.pure. Food parcels are also distributed when resources allow, ensuring families have access to essential supplies.

    Looking Ahead

Our immediate goal is to increase hospital meals to 500 per day within the next week. Tomorrow, we’ll prepare 250 meals, pushing the limits of what’s possible with our current resources. With your continued support, I’m confident we can rise to this challenge.

    A Personal Note

Next week, I’ll be traveling to Egypt to visit my sisters—one a permanent resident, the other recently medically evacuated. Thanks to the cheap seats I booked, I’ll also spend a few days recharging and reconnecting during my day long layovers with friends in Paris, Amsterdam, and Turkey before returning to continue our work in Gaza. Please let me know if you are near any of those places.

    End-of-Year Appeal

As the year draws to a close, I hope you find time to rest and reflect. Donations to the Gaza Soup Kitchen are now tax-exempt in the U.S., and your support has never been more critical. The coming weeks are pivotal for Gaza and the Palestinian cause, and every contribution makes a difference.

Thank you for standing with us and for helping to keep hope alive in Gaza.

    Warm regards,

"If #KamalAdwanHospital is decommissioned, there will be no way of preserving conditions of life to the remaining 75,000+ civilians in north Gaza," the hospital's director said.

    December 22, 2024

"The Israel Defense Forces [#IDF] on Saturday ordered one of the last partly operating hospitals in northern Gaza to shutter and evacuate, even as hospital staff say there are not enough ambulances to do so safely and persistent firing on the facility makes people afraid to leave.

"Israel launched bomb, artillery, and sniper attacks on the Kamal Adwan Hospital in Beit Lahia beginning Saturday, as the Wafa news agency reported. The attacks killed three people in the area and wounded several, according to Wafu. On Sunday, an Israeli drone strike on the hospital's fuel tanks and power generator shut off its electricity, the Anadolu Agency reported.

"'We currently have nearly 400 civilians inside the hospital, including #babies in the neonatal unit, whose lives depend on oxygen and incubators,' hospital director Dr. Husam Abu Safiya said in a statement on Sunday. 'We cannot evacuate these patients safely without assistance, equipment, and time.'"

"In October, the Israeli Knesset voted to ban any activity by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees – a lifeline for Palestinians in Gaza. This move is part of a larger war against not only Palestinians, but also the United Nations itself. Israel has refused to comply with UN General Assembly or Security Council resolutions, derided decisions and advisory opinions of the International Court of Justice, and rejected UN human rights envoys and commissions of inquiry.

    - What is UNRWA, and why is Israel so obsessed with destroying it?
    - Why is Israel waging war on the United Nations?
    - What does this mean for Palestinians?

"Please join Bowdoin Students for Justice in Palestine (#SJP) & Faculty and Staff for Justice in Palestine (#FSJP) for a free public panel featuring:

    - Nasser Abourahme - Assistant Professor of Middle Eastern and North African Studies at Bowdoin College

    - Fateh Azzam - Former Middle East Representative for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights

    - Lee O'Brien - Former Head of Research for the UNRWA West Bank and Gaza; Former Head of the Middle East Team, Department of Political Affairs for the UN Secretariat.

Update on December 5, 2024 by #HaniAlmadhoun, Organizer

Donor Update: Honoring #ChefMahmoud’s Legacy and Pressing On

    "Dear Friends,

"This is my saddest update to date, but first, if you're new here—welcome. I’m so glad you’ve joined us, even during what has been an unimaginably difficult week for my family and me.

    "Our Commitment to Gaza

"Let me begin by saying this: we are not going anywhere. Our kitchens remain fully operational, with three locations in North Gaza and two in the south. Every day, we serve thousands of families in need, and we are determined to continue this vital work.

    "A Tragic Loss

"On Saturday, around 9:00 a.m. local time in Palestine, an Israeli drone targeted and assassinated my brother, Chef Muhammad. It’s almost unfathomable. A man whose only mission was to help others—a chef—was taken by an instrument of death. He wasn’t just a chef; he was a hero.

"At just 33 years old, Muhammad dedicated his life to supporting the people of North Gaza. He refused to leave despite immense danger, providing food, water, and essential supplies to his community. He loved and appreciated his life, honored his parents, was a good dad to his kids. Mahmoud even supported local hospitals with enough resources to sustain them for weeks. The things he has done has been already been acknowledged by the local community. Instead of awards and recognitions which he didn't seek, he got a missile meant tk kill bad guys not humanitarians like Mahmoud.

"He was detained multiple times by the Israeli army and always released immediately because he was a civilian, a humanitarian. So why was he targeted? Why was a chef deemed a threat? The loss is heartbreaking and senseless. But Muhammad died a hero, and we are incredibly proud of him.

    "Media Efforts

"This week, I’ve done countless media interviews to share Muhammad’s story. While exhausting, it is a privilege to bring awareness to his legacy and the ongoing #genocide in Gaza. We’ve spoken about him on platforms like #DemocracyNow, Fox 5 DC, CNN, PBS, AJ+, and many more. These stories won’t bring him back, but they hold the Israeli army morally accountable and offer comfort to those who loved him. Also, special shout out to Chris and Janeen from IMEU for helping me and so many Palestinians to be present in the US and Global media.

"Muhammad now joins our brother Majed, who was killed exactly a year earlier. The pain of losing two brothers is immeasurable, but we march on—not because we seek grand statements, but because supporting our people is the only way we know how."

  40. #NativeAmericans Hold #NationalDayOfMourning on #Thanksgiving

"'Thanksgiving' is a white-washed holiday designed to conceal its true origins of violence, #genocide, #LandTheft, and #ForcedAssimilation," - #IndigenousEnvironmentalNetwork.

"In contrast with Thanksgiving celebrations across the United States on Thursday, Native Americans held a National Day of Mourning, promoted accurate history, and championed Indigenous voices and struggles.

"Despite rainy conditions, the United American Indians of New England held its 55th annual National Day of Mourning at Cole's Hill in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Kisha James, who is an enrolled member of the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) and also Oglala Lakota, shared how her grandfather founded the event in 1970 and pledged to continue to "tear down the Thanksgiving mythology."

"The past influences the present" and "the settler project" continues with racism, misogyny, and anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination, James told the crowd. "The Pilgrims are not ancient history."

"James took aim at fossil fuel pipelines, oil rigs, skyscrapers, corporations, the U.S. military, mass incarceration, and the criminalization of immigrants, and declared that "no one is illegal on stolen on land."

"Jean-Luc Pierite, a member of the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe of Louisiana and president of the board of directors of the North American Indian Center of Boston who helped organize this year's gathering, told USA Today that "while we are mourning some tragic history but also contemporary issues, we are also expressing gratitude for each [other] and building this community space."

"Coming together as a community for a feast and to express gratitude—that's not something that was imported to this continent because of colonization," Pierite said. "Indigenous peoples have had these practices going back beyond, beyond colonial contact."

This year's event in Plymouth included speeches about the suffering of Palestinians—as Israel wages a U.S. government-backed war on the Gaza Strip that has killed at least 44,330 people, injured 104,933, and led to a genocide case at the International Court of Justice—and of people impacted by extractive industries.

"The message from Indigenous peoples internationally has been consistent: that we need to center the development of traditional ecological knowledge, Indigenous knowledge, and move away from fossil fuel extractive economies," said Pierite. "At this time the world needs Indigenous peoples."
