El Chac Mool destaca en la arqueología de América como una de las esculturas más enigmáticas y extendidas del mundo prehispánico. Estas figuras aparecieron al inicio del periodo Posclásico, aproximadamente entre el siglo IX y el siglo XIII, poblando los centros ceremoniales de culturas tan diversas como la maya en Chichén Itzá, la tolteca en Tula y la mexica en el Templo Mayor de Tenochtitlan.
La piedra representa a un personaje masculino en una postura muy peculiar: está recostado sobre la espalda con las piernas dobladas, el torso levantado sobre los codos y la cabeza volteada de lado. Sobre el vientre, la figura sostiene un cuenco o plato hondo diseñado estrictamente para recibir ofrendas sagradas a los dioses. Los sacerdotes depositaban allí semillas, flores, copal y, en las ceremonias más solemnes, sangre o corazones destinados a mantener la energía vital del universo. Un dato curioso es que el nombre original de la pieza se perdió por completo; la denominación actual fue inventada en el año 1874 por el explorador Augustus Le Plongeon, quien bautizó a la estatua creyendo por error que se trataba de un antiguo gobernante llamado garra de jaguar ( Chac Mool).
Aunque los vestigios de estas esculturas varían en tamaño y detalles de pintura polícroma según la región, su función como mensajeros o altares de conexión entre el plano terrenal y las divinidades celestes permaneció intacta. Hoy en día, admirar estos guardianes de piedra en museos o zonas arqueológicas nos conecta directamente con los ritos más profundos de las civilizaciones que dominaron Mesoamérica antes de la llegada de los españoles.
