  1. So, one of the staples of my radio listening when I first moved to #Maine was #EasternSands, hosted by #JackieNice. Not only was Jackie an amazing DJ (who introduced folks to music from the #MiddleEast and around the world), she was known for her generosity and kindness. She and her sister Deidre owned Silly's Restaurant -- a #PortlandME jewel -- and often fed homeless folks and those who couldn't afford a meal. Hail and farewell to someone who knew what #Community was all about!

    Remembering Jackie Nice

"It is with great sadness that we share the news that longtime #WMPG volunteer and programmer Jackie Nice passed away this past week.

"For more than 25 years, Jackie welcomed listeners every Sunday afternoon as the beloved host of Eastern Sands Radio. Her program introduced audiences to music and cultures from around the world, reflecting her belief that sharing music could help make the world a more understanding and compassionate place.

"As fellow WMPG volunteer Dave Wade so beautifully wrote, Jackie 'opened our ears and minds to all kinds of music from around the world with a goal to make it a better place to live.'

"Jackie’s passion for community radio never faded. She continued hosting her program well into her 80s, sharing her warmth, curiosity, and love of music with generations of listeners. She passed away on Monday, just one month shy of her 90th birthday.

"For many years Jackie was a cherished part of WMPG’s Sunday afternoons and an inspiration to volunteers and listeners alike. Her voice, her spirit, and the music she shared will be deeply missed.

"Our thoughts are with Jackie’s family, friends, and the many listeners whose lives she touched.

Thank you, Jackie, for the music, the memories, and your many years of service to the WMPG community. You will be greatly missed."

From her obituary: "The atoms that once danced together as Jackie Nice will continue their own infinite journey through the universe, just as her love continues through all of us. 'When I die, do not seek my resting place in the earth; find it in the hearts of people.' Attributed to the 13th-century Persian poet Rumi"

  2. On tonight's (May 28, 2026) episode of #BluntYouthRadio, #MaineYouth talk about #Surveillance in #Maine. One takeaway -- that there are more surveillance cameras in areas with #ImmigrantHousing and #LowerIncome folks, rather than the mostly white affluent areas (like #WillardBeach). Not surprising...

"#WMPG’s Blunt Youth Radio Project brings together Maine teenagers to produce audio stories and interviews on topics that matter to them. Finished work is aired on WMPG or made available in podcast format."

  5. I heard an excellent #podcast on #WMPG this afternoon about the #AI #Surveillance state and how #TechBros are bullying towns into hosting #DataCenters! A must-listen!

    AI Surveillance Cameras in Maine

    30 mins - First Aired December 15, 2025

    WMPG-FM. Univ of So. Maine - Weekly - Mondays - 1:00 PM
Producer & Host: Richard Rudolph, PhD.

"The podcast is an interview of #DylanOliver, a native of #HodgsonME who is a staff member of the Alliance for Secure AI. Dylan talked about how a number of communities in the state have installed AI surveillance cameras which log and store every single car that passes by a given location, creating a searchable database of our movements regardless of whether anyone is suspected of a crime or not. He also talked about how the data can be shared with federal and local agencies for 'investigative purposes' even if a local police department chooses to restrict data to its own officers."

  6. #BernieReim #Fundraiser update

    by Keith Launchbury
    Organizer, 8/21/2025

"This is a photo of Bernie sitting up and using a wheelchair yesterday. Today he is being discharged from the Rehabilitation hospital in Portland and he is moving into an assisted living center in Kennebunk. He enjoys having visitors as he continues his recovery process.

"He is very grateful to everyone of you who have donated to help him offset some of the medical expenses he has already incurred, and the towards the monthly cost of the assisted living facility."

  7. So, I mentioned #BernieReim's situation to one of my former teachers (the faculty did not know about it), and she spread the word. I saw that a lot of faculty donated soon afterwards. I love the #USM / #WMPG community! It's truly a community!

  8. #InterculturalInsights on #WMPG alternates between four different segments... A brand new one, #TheWeavers, airs on the first Tuesday of the month at 11:30am - 12 noon (right before #DemocracyNow). The other three shows are great as well... Shows available for five weeks after airdates via the audio archives...

"Intercultural Insights offers four different shows that air once a month.

On the first Tuesday of every month The Weavers are weaving the values of their ancestors into the world we share today. Hosts #LisaSockabasin and #NancyLaCoote explore #Wabanaki values and how these values are lived (or not lived) today.

"On the second Tuesday of each month, #ReturningTheLand is hosted by USM professor Dr. #DavidLowry, the founder of the #IndigenousPeoplesTrust—an initiative calling for justice and the return of Indigenous land.

"The third Tuesday of the month features Dr. #IdellaGlenn, the Vice President of Equity, Inclusion, and Community Impact at USM with her show: Building USM’s Beloved Community. Unspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Beloved Community, Dr. Idella Glenn sits down with members of the community to foster and embrace the all-#inclusive spirit of USM.

"And on the fourth Tuesday of each month, #VoicesAndVisions: The #Podcast is an #Artisttalk series that features #IndigoArts Alliance’s alumni artists in residence, highlighting their similarities, creative #intersections, distinct voices, and their residence experience. Each episode is a conversation between two artists while they were in residence at Indigo Arts Alliance."

  10. CW: CW - Talk of Gender Dysphoria

So, I've been a Dance/Club #DJ for 20+ years (I've scaled down considerably during and after #Covid19). I've always wanted to be a #RadioDJ on #WMPG, and have come close to completing the training several times. What holds me back? Well, one thing is having to focus on BOTH spinning music and using the controls (which could be resolved easily with pre-recorded tracks) -- but the BIG THING that holds me back is that I HATE the sound of my own voice. In my mind, my voice is so much lower. I'm always horrified by how high my voice sounds. And it's not like my voice is wicked high pitched (I'm a contralto naturally). But I hate the way it sounds. And it's not like I hate others with high voices (my favorite comic actors have high voices -- #MeganMullally and #KristenSchaal come to mind) -- it's just not me. (And no, extra "T" is not for me for reasons...) Just venting I suppose... But, well, anyone who can relate -- please feel free to chime in.
