So, I've been downloading #GBLTQ resources and historical documents (including #QueerTalk, a radio show on #WMPG hosted by one of my first friends after I moved to #Maine). Why am I doing this? Because I don't trust #Trump and fiends to be in charge of public university archives. I'll be uploading those precious digital records to the @internetarchive soon. So grateful IA are there to be an independent repository of #History and #Culture! 📚 🎧 🎥

So, one of the staples of my radio listening when I first moved to #Maine was #EasternSands, hosted by #JackieNice. Not only was Jackie an amazing DJ (who introduced folks to music from the #MiddleEast and around the world), she was known for her generosity and kindness. She and her sister Deidre owned Silly's Restaurant -- a #PortlandME jewel -- and often fed homeless folks and those who couldn't afford a meal. Hail and farewell to someone who knew what #Community was all about!
Remembering Jackie Nice
"It is with great sadness that we share the news that longtime #WMPG volunteer and programmer Jackie Nice passed away this past week.
"For more than 25 years, Jackie welcomed listeners every Sunday afternoon as the beloved host of Eastern Sands Radio. Her program introduced audiences to music and cultures from around the world, reflecting her belief that sharing music could help make the world a more understanding and compassionate place.
"As fellow WMPG volunteer Dave Wade so beautifully wrote, Jackie 'opened our ears and minds to all kinds of music from around the world with a goal to make it a better place to live.'
"Jackie’s passion for community radio never faded. She continued hosting her program well into her 80s, sharing her warmth, curiosity, and love of music with generations of listeners. She passed away on Monday, just one month shy of her 90th birthday.
"For many years Jackie was a cherished part of WMPG’s Sunday afternoons and an inspiration to volunteers and listeners alike. Her voice, her spirit, and the music she shared will be deeply missed.
"Our thoughts are with Jackie’s family, friends, and the many listeners whose lives she touched.
Thank you, Jackie, for the music, the memories, and your many years of service to the WMPG community. You will be greatly missed."
From her obituary: "The atoms that once danced together as Jackie Nice will continue their own infinite journey through the universe, just as her love continues through all of us. 'When I die, do not seek my resting place in the earth; find it in the hearts of people.' Attributed to the 13th-century Persian poet Rumi"

So, one of the things I love about listening to #CommunityRadio is the randomness of the music selections. I hear new-to-me music (sometimes in genres that I don't usually listen to) as well as "golden oldies" from my early childhood.
Streaming services either throw stuff at you (based on algorithms) or can keep one stuck listening to the same music over and over (which can be good for "comfort listening" and recalling memories, but not for sparking new pathways).

On tonight's (May 28, 2026) episode of #BluntYouthRadio, #MaineYouth talk about #Surveillance in #Maine. One takeaway -- that there are more surveillance cameras in areas with #ImmigrantHousing and #LowerIncome folks, rather than the mostly white affluent areas (like #WillardBeach). Not surprising...

Heard on #WMPG this morning...
"Welcome to my world (welcome to my world)
Welcome to my only world (my only world)
It is full of space junk
But your words are coming through
I'm riding on the space junk
And it's bringing me to you
Bringing me to you"- #WangChung, 1997

March 24, 2026: "This show features Evan Richert and Roger Milliken Jr., two longtime leaders in land use, planning, and conservation in Maine.
"They took a close look at the Maine Indian Claims Settlement Act to answer a key question: who is right—the State or the #WabanakiNations?
"Their conclusion is clear—the Wabanaki Nations’ interpretation is correct, and the State’s position deserves closer scrutiny.
"We’ll talk about what they found, why Maine stands apart on Tribal sovereignty, and what it means for the future of justice in our state."

So, my buddy #DJShaxx is hosting a live event this Wednesday -- The Fool’s Last Beg. This event will be the closing party for #WMPG's Spring #Begathon !
Donate and share. WMPG broadcasts shows like #DemocracyNow, #CommunityVoicesForChange, #ReturningTheLand, and much, much more! #CommunityRadio is so important in this age of #CorporateMedia and #Billionaires!
Fool's Last Beg
"On April 1, WMPG’s local music show Local Motives takes over the Portland Media Center for a high-energy, one-night-only celebration: Fool’s Last Beg – the grand finale of Begathon.
"Hosted at the #PortlandMediaCenter on Congress Street, the event brings together live radio, music, and a bit of April Fool’s mischief to mark the final push of WMPG’s week-long listener-powered #fundraising drive.
"The evening will be emceed by Erin Ames of Radio Ya-Ya’s and feature a special live broadcast of Local Motives, WMPG’s beloved showcase of local music. The show will feature a set by Crazy Déjà Vu, known to bring “The New Freakout” vibe that will energize both the studio audience and listeners/viewers tuning in from home.
"Among the highlights of the night is 'Shaxx in the Glass.' #LeftOfTheDial host, DJ Shaxx will spin live from the Portland Media Center’s street-facing window, turning Congress Street into a spontaneous dance floor. Fans can also catch his famously unpredictable Karaoke Weather Report, broadcast live over WMPG’s airwaves.
"Flyer for Fools Last Beg Event“It’s exactly the kind of creative collaboration community media makes possible,” said Nate Eldridge, Executive Director of Portland Media Center. 'When local radio and local television come together, you get something spontaneous, joyful, and uniquely Portland. We’re thrilled to open our studio and our windows to the community for this celebration.'
"After a full week of on-air fundraising, Fool’s Last Beg marks the final opportunity for supporters to join the celebration in person and help push Begathon across the finish line
" 'Begathon is when our listeners remind us just how much WMPG means to them,' said #AnnellaLinton, Development Director at WMPG [and a very cool person!]. 'Fool’s Last Beg is our way of celebrating that relationship, with live music, a little silliness, and the incredible energy that comes from a community that believes in independent, local radio.'
"Come down, celebrate, dance in the street, and help keep Portland’s airwaves vibrant and fiercely local. Dress up (fun and colorful) and be in the live music video shoot for Crazy Déjà Vu."

#CommunityVoicesForChange - Maine Women's Lobby
30 mins - First Aired February 23, 2026 on #WMPG-FM
Host: Richard Rudolph"The podcast for February 23, 2026 is an interview of Destie Hoffman Sprague who is the Executive Director of the Maine's Women Lobby. The show focused on a referendum question that will be on the Maine ballot this coming fall which would restrict transgender students’ access to school sports and facilities. Destie first talked about why the League is involved in this issue and why it has joined a coalition to defeat the proposal. The coalition contends the referendum will increase bullying and harassment, cost schools millions in potential ligation and undermine public education. According to Destie the referendum is spearheaded by the group Protect Girls Support in Maine which seeks to mandate sports by sex, requiring public school students to play on sports teams based on the sex listed on their birth certificates. Destie believes the effort to restrict transgender students from playing sports in Maine is primarily driven by the Trump Administration which has threatened to pull federal education funding if the state does not ban transgender girls from female sports. Maine's Governor, Janet Mills, Attorney General Aaron Frey, and the Maine Principals’ Association are opposed. In closing, Destie encouraged listeners to get involved in the fight to defeat this measure. which would undermine Maine's existing #HumanRightsAct which protects #GenderIdentity."

#PortlandME - #JazzAtTheMovies film series
"#WMPG’s Jazz At The Movies team are pleased to present our first film of the 2026 season, the documentary 'Music Pictures: #NewOrleans'.
"Beautifully shot and recorded, the film is a loving portrait of four Crescent City jazz, soul, and blues legends, and a celebration of 100 years of New Orleans musical history.
"Directed by New Orleans native filmmaker #BenChace, 'Music Pictures: New Orleans' is a vibrant documentary exploring the rich musical heritage of New Orleans. It showcases the city’s diverse musical landscape, from legendary #JazzClubs to lively street performances, highlighting the influences of #Creole, #AfricanAmerican, and #French cultures, and how historical events, like #MardiGras and #HurricaneKatrina, have shaped the city’s music scene. Through interviews with local musicians and historians, Music Pictures: New Orleans reveals music’s central role in the city’s cultural and social fabric.
"The film showcases four New Orleans music legends: Grammy-winning #IrmaThomas 'The Soul Queen of New Orleans' ; #BennyJonesSr., the leader and drummer of the world renowned #TremeBrassBand; guitarist #LittleFreddieKing, the 'Last King of the Blues'; and the pianist and educator, #EllisMarsalisJr., patriarch of the famed jazz family, in what would be his last concert before his death. Music Pictures: New Orleans follows each of the four artists, one by one, as they talk about their lives, rehearse, and record a new album in the studio in early 2020s. By combining vintage footage with live interviews and rare backstage access, this film provides a wonderful snapshot of New Orleans as the home for so much great American music, from #soul to #BrassBand to jazz and #TheBlues. What better way to get ready for the Mardi Gras season!"

#DJShaxx Rocks! This was one of the tunes he played tonight! Such a rabble rouser!
" 'Panic in Detroit' is a song written by the English singer-songwriter #DavidBowie for the album Aladdin Sane in 1973. Bowie based it on his friend #IggyPop's descriptions of revolutionaries he had known in #Michigan and Pop's experiences during the 1967 #DetroitRiots."
Wikipedia - "The 1967 #DetroitRiot, also known as the 12th Street Riot and the Detroit Uprising, was the bloodiest of the urban riots in the United States during the 'long, hot summer of 1967'. Composed mainly of confrontations between African American residents and the Detroit Police Department, it began in the early morning hours of Sunday, July 23, 1967, in Detroit, Michigan."
