Just started reading Adele Bertei's book on Sinéad O'Connor's Universal Mother album for the 33 1/3 series, this is how it starts:

"High-voltage tip-off for my dear muso brothers who prefer to sink their teeth into the man-mayo of the usual rock criticism; this book is Ganza [neologism for a feminist 'gonzo' style of journalism]. It's a book misogynists may write off as feminist doggerel. Sinéad O'Connor's lyrics were sometimes described so. Like her, I will say things people think yet are petrified of voicing out loud for fear of persecution in a censorial moment that feels too much like the American Inquisition. I'm writing in Sinéad's honor and in honor of the women without voices, those gone and remaining... Thought this was priced at $3.99 but it was $9.99 but it’s worth it. “Mandinka” is the best but there’s lots of other stuff to love on here. Her voice is just incredible, especially considering she was a pregnant teenager when she recorded it. Badass.
