Double Play “The Captain of Her Heart”
Listen to this track by Swiss duo with a talent for ambience, Double (prounounced DOO-bluh). It’s “The Captain of Her Heart”, an international radio hit taken from the band’s 1985 debut record Blue. The song was a bona fide hit single on the radio all over the world, scoring top twenty positions in the US and top ten in the UK and on European charts, too. In Canada it scored number four and could be heard up and down the dial on various radio formats. Today, it’s still recognized as the most enduring and arguably most successful pop song any act from Switzerland has yet produced internationally.
Its success was due in part to its unique character among other songs in the charts at the time. When it first appeared, it was identified by how mysterious it sounded, and how well it trades on pure atmosphere. Even today, it almost sounds as though it slipped from out of a dream. One might suppose that’s true of every evocative work of art to one degree or another. But “The Captain of Her Heart” seems to embody that quality more than most. Everything about it conjures up a nocturnal world of its own during a time when bright and brash sounds ruled the airwaves and when there were hard lines between styles of pop music. The song was perhaps tangentially related to sophisti-pop due to its jazzy feel. But it also stood apart from that label, too.
The song’s musical anatomy is spare on every front while also containing a rich bounty of varied texture and pure feel. The central riff is the same as its melody, which should make it sound one dimensional, in theory. Yet the absolute opposite is true somehow as a recording. The composer of the melody and one half of Double, keyboardist and percussionist Felix Haug, originally demoed the melody playing a synthesizer in a classic mid-Eighties and decidedly Europop style. This was just before he entered the studio with the other half of the duo, singer and lyricist Kurt Maloo.
With a grand piano available in the studio, Haug played the melody on it at the behest of the sound engineer to serve as a guide to the vocal part. With the lyrics not yet in place, Maloo heard the playback and wrote them in one sitting as the story came out in a whole piece; a blue-tinged watercolour impressionist tale about a woman who embarks on a path to her own destiny, having decided to stop waiting for some romanticized figure to define it for her. Maloo’s baritone voice is as much a defining feature as Haug’s simple but impactful melody line, striking a fine balance between empowered optimism and profound melancholy.

It’s a song about facing a cold truth rather than a comforting illusion. Yet the song is draped in the costuming of high romance and of deep tragedy. It’s a song about finally finding one’s independence from false hopes and dreams. But it also contains a vast ocean of loneliness and emotional desolation in the absence of how comforting those hopes and dreams have been. The second lead voice of the soprano saxophone played by Christian Ostermeier seems to wordlessly embody the unspoken tension between these two sets of forces.
The song’s spacious and sparse arrangement bolsters a curious mixture of contrasts, counterbalances, and contradictions. It represents a uniquely balanced cocktail of emotions for listeners, too. This adds yet another aspect to how hard it is to pin down the kind of song “The Captain of Her Heart” really is. Is this a happy song or is it a sad one? The answer of course is yes. To North American ears that tend to expect more demarcated lines between narrative forces and emotional undercurrents, there is a lack of resolution in it. But its subtle, unresolved tension is a part of what makes it so compelling as a composition and recording.
These undefinable qualities heard in “The Captain of Her Heart” are perhaps down to a couple of factors. One is that both Haug and Maloo shared a background as painters as well as musicians. The blurry lines across these different art forms help to explain how important colour is to this song. This tune is cast in shades of blue one can practically hear, making the album title well earned. Another factor is that their points of view come from Continental European traditions wherein romance, realism, tragedy, and triumph tend to share space rather than stand in opposition to each other.
All of these ingredients make “The Captain of Her Heart” a highly romantic song about not being beholden to romantic ideals that keep one from moving on. It’s optimistic, but it also contains a dash of the forlorn. It’s liberating and it’s lonely. Its acoustic-meets-electronic approach seems to back this up, with warmer elements like Maloo’s soothing and sombre voice and Haug’s pristinely rendered grand piano intermingling with the colder, bluer wash of the synths. This is perhaps why the song sounded so out of time in a more polarized age of the mid-1980s. In retrospect, it seemed to anticipate the ambient pop music of the Nineties instead.
“The Captain of Her Heart” was Double’s sole hit single outside of their native Switzerland, although they released a couple of other singles from the Blue album. After their 1987 follow-up, Dou3le (pronounced Double Three) which produced yet another single in “Devil’s Ball”, the duo parted ways on creative grounds although still remaining friends. Maloo started a solo career. Haug wrote music for films. They gathered together again by the early 2000s to record more music as Double. But Haug died unexpectedly of a heart attack in 2004.
Despite their thin volume of work as a duo, “The Captain of Her Heart” is still Double’s most resonant and enduring contribution to pop music. It’s both evocative of its time and transcendent of it by the same measure, which is a rare achievement.
