CALL TO THE ANTIFASCIST 5TH OF MAY 2026 DEMONSTRATION - UTRECHT DOMPLEIN
DAY AGAINST FASCISM
On the 5th of May we reclaim its long forgotten history: not a day of empty words and empty gestures but a day of militant remembrance of those who resisted, fought back, built the struggle and to continue for antifascist futures and collective liberation.
We reject empty slogans like "Freedom we celebrate together" (in Dutch: "Vrijheid vier je samen") or "To understand history" (in Dutch: "De geschiedenis begrijpen"). What do these words mean when it is spoken by politicians, institutions and authorities who justify genocide, relentless imperialist wars and a capitalist logic wherein profit will always be prioritized over people's lives and dignity. Their so-called support for freedom through the weapons industry and military contributes directly to state-sponsored violence and the oppression of others.
Recently we've seen groups being dehumanized, their existence being deemed "illegal", people being threatened with imprisonment and deportation. Racism and hate-speech being normalized daily on national broadcasts, corporate media that parrot power instead of holding them accountable table.

5 mei: Bevrijdingsdag! De dag dat veel mensen in Nederland de nederlaag vieren van het nazi-rijk van Adolf Hitler. Er kwam een einde aan staatsterreur, razzia’s en concentratiekampen. Het einde aan deze verschrikkingen is het vieren waard.
Maar is er nog wel reden tot feest? Opnieuw zien we dat groepen worden ontmenselijkt, dat racisme dagelijks op nationale tv wordt genormaliseerd en vrouwenrechten weer ter discussie staan. Agressieve knokploegen op straat, media die de macht napraten in plaats van controleren en steeds meer stemmen gaan op die rechten willen afpakken van iedereen die geen hetero is. Studenten die zich uitspreken tegen de genocide in Gaza worden voorgesteld als ‘vijanden van het volk’.
Machtshonger
De teloorgang van deze vrijheden is geen toeval. We staan tegenover een systeem dat alles vertrapt in eigen machtshonger. Een systeem dat leidt tot oorlog, op weg daar naartoe verplettert het alles op zijn weg. Dit systeem heeft een naam: fascisme. Wie doet alsof dat een afgesloten hoofdstuk is sinds de Tweede Wereldoorlog, bedriegt zichzelf.
Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog zijn tal van landen in dezelfde fascistische val getrapt: van Portugal tot Griekenland, van Chili tot Paraguay. En recenter zijn de meest zichtbare voorbeelden de VS en Rusland. Wachten wij tot Europa weer in dezelfde duisternis belandt? Gaan we niks doen, in de hoop dat het tij zich vanzelf keert? Of gaan we in het offensief? Écht de strijd aan met de fascisten!
Onze vijanden
Fascisme overkomt ons niet. Achter leiders als Wilders, Meloni, Orban en Trump werken conservatieve krachten aan hun heerschappij. Het zijn niets-ontziende miljardairs, witte superioriteitsdenkers, conservatieve religieuzen en heel veel middelmatige mannen. Met angst voor de ander, angst voor statusverlies en herstel van een vermeend glorieus verleden overtuigen ze de massa om via democratische weg hun onvrije toekomst tegemoet te stemmen.
Opnieuw zetten de fascisten technologie in om hun idealen werkelijkheid te maken. Het gevolg is dat grootschalige spionage en monitoring eenvoudiger is dan ooit. Ze beïnvloeden wetgevers om alle tegenspraak in te dammen (hallo demonstratieverbod).
We hebben jou nodig!
Als fascisme weer zo zichtbaar is, wordt antifascisme noodzaak. We moeten fascisme stoppen en daar hebben we iedereen bij nodig, ook jou! Vandaar de oproep:

Cindo de Mayo is a celebration of the Mexican military defeating the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.
It morphed into a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage in the US after being initially celebrated for a long time in California by Mexican-Americans there to, once again, celebrate Mexican victory over the French in the Battle of Puebla.

It was believed the plants could ward away evil and cleanse impurities, and so it was common to see them hung from the eaves of houses.
On May 5th people add iris leaves to their baths (菖蒲湯 'shōbu-yu') to fortify their health.
