So, one of the staples of my radio listening when I first moved to #Maine was #EasternSands, hosted by #JackieNice. Not only was Jackie an amazing DJ (who introduced folks to music from the #MiddleEast and around the world), she was known for her generosity and kindness. She and her sister Deidre owned Silly's Restaurant -- a #PortlandME jewel -- and often fed homeless folks and those who couldn't afford a meal. Hail and farewell to someone who knew what #Community was all about!
Remembering Jackie Nice
"It is with great sadness that we share the news that longtime #WMPG volunteer and programmer Jackie Nice passed away this past week.
"For more than 25 years, Jackie welcomed listeners every Sunday afternoon as the beloved host of Eastern Sands Radio. Her program introduced audiences to music and cultures from around the world, reflecting her belief that sharing music could help make the world a more understanding and compassionate place.
"As fellow WMPG volunteer Dave Wade so beautifully wrote, Jackie 'opened our ears and minds to all kinds of music from around the world with a goal to make it a better place to live.'
"Jackie’s passion for community radio never faded. She continued hosting her program well into her 80s, sharing her warmth, curiosity, and love of music with generations of listeners. She passed away on Monday, just one month shy of her 90th birthday.
"For many years Jackie was a cherished part of WMPG’s Sunday afternoons and an inspiration to volunteers and listeners alike. Her voice, her spirit, and the music she shared will be deeply missed.
"Our thoughts are with Jackie’s family, friends, and the many listeners whose lives she touched.
Thank you, Jackie, for the music, the memories, and your many years of service to the WMPG community. You will be greatly missed."
From her obituary: "The atoms that once danced together as Jackie Nice will continue their own infinite journey through the universe, just as her love continues through all of us. 'When I die, do not seek my resting place in the earth; find it in the hearts of people.' Attributed to the 13th-century Persian poet Rumi"

My mom's BFF. He came back from Vietnam and rejected his family's fortune to live in the woods. One of my teachers growing up.
"Many people around Haverhill knew him as Dennis “The Can Man.” Fewer knew him by his real name, Dennis Babbitt. The tall, lanky man who was often spotted around town on his bicycle died Jan. 3. 2024 at Holy Family Hospital in Methuen. He was 81.
"Dennis was an interesting person with a scruffy exterior. According to his obituary published by the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, he was a friend of local painter Mimi Johnson, he was a history buff, politically savvy, and he was very intelligent. Dennis was a well known institution in Haverhill, always out and about on one of his many bicycles. He was known to be kind, respectful and made a big impact on the lives of the people he met."

Well, of course they did.
> A study found that when a person dressed as Batman was present in a subway car, passengers were significantly more likely to offer their seats to a pregnant woman (67% compared to 37% without Batman), with 44% of helpful passengers not even consciously noticing Batman's presence. The research suggests unexpected events can promote prosocial behavior by interrupting people's mental autopilot.

I am someone who rarely drinks anymore. But when I do, the very first thing that starts to show up for me is a feeling of love and appreciation for all kinds of humans. It's a great thing to experience — appreciation, awe, admiration. An absolutely delightful state.
Have to say, Mastodon is such an amazing place — scrolling through posts right now brings me great delight. You folks are so amazing. Social networking done all kinds of right.

So, one of my favorite teachers, #BernieReim, was in a terrible car accident. He is on #Medicare, and, well, he has a long way to go to recover, and Medicare isn't going to cover a lot of the costs.
As an instructor, Bernie let me do all my team exercises solo (I didn't want the jocks I had been paired with to bring my grade down, and didn't want to do all the work for them), listened to my sharing about the math involved in astrology (which is how I learned to hand-calculate logarithms), and also let me submit a painting of a galaxy as a final project! In addition to teaching #Astronomy, Bernie is a regular on WMPG, and also volunteers at the local observatory.
Please share and donate if you can. Bernie is a good human, and only has his friends and community for support!

"Hi friends!
For those who have been long time listeners, your beloved co-host Bernie has been in a terrible car accident that almost cost his life. He is now looking at several months of recovery and his dear friend has started a gofundme to support his rehab journey. Sharing this news for those who are wondering where we are on the airwaves. Dm me if you would like to visit, he loves visitors!"

CBC Radio: How an abandoned couch brought joy and mystery to an English village. “It was a flash of inspiration that set the community photo project in motion. On a quiet Sunday morning in early April, in the rural village of Lydbrook, England, photographer Alex Elton-Wall leapt out of bed with a mission. For weeks, he’d passed the same discarded two-seater sofa, abandoned on a patch of waste […]
