Excerpt: "About 12 agricultural workers were detained in Skowhegan by federal officers Wednesday morning, two community advocates with knowledge of the situation said.
"Officers who appeared to be affiliated with U.S. Customs and Border Protection boarded a van and detained the workers at about 6 a.m., Iver Lofving, an advocate and translator, said.
"The van, Lofving said, was carrying workers from a former motel in Skowhegan to Backyard Farms in Madison and was stopped by federal agents about 10 minutes from Backyard Farms. The van also picked up several people from elsewhere in Skowhegan, who were detained as part of the operation, he said.
"Federal and local officials have yet to confirm the details of the operation, including how many workers were detained, where they are from, why they were detained and where they are being held. CBP and Skowhegan police did not respond to requests for comment.
"The raid marked the second time this month that immigration officers have detained workers en route from the former Skowhegan motel at 137 West Front St. to Backyard Farms. "

'[T]his space will be low key and not brightly advertised as an ICE location,' Wofford wrote to other government officials. 'The GSA property manager does not speculate that protests will be a problem for the vet center.' According to the email, ICE will process, fingerprint, and detain people suspected of immigration violations, keeping them in onsite holding rooms before transporting them in unmarked vans to an overnight detention facility elsewhere, if necessary.
"At present, people apprehended by the agency and waiting for immigration court proceedings are generally held at the Cumberland County Jail before being moved out of state. According to ICE’s website, the nearest Enforcement and Removal Operations field office, whose area of responsibility includes Maine, is in Boston. However, in October 2019, the agency announced the opening of an administrative office in downtown Portland at One City Center, which also has one holding cell. The news of the two facilities came as the number of people arrested by ICE spiked across the country. In 2019, ICE apprehended over 1.1 million people, a rise of nearly 70% from the previous fiscal year. In 2020, the agency convicted nearly 400,000 people and deported over 185,000 noncitizens from the U.S.

PORTLAND, Maine —"Activists lit up parts of Portland with a message Friday, asking Immigrations and Customs Enforcement to leave the city.
"Light projections shared messages on One City Center, the location of ICE's office, asking the management company to cancel the lease.
"A second projection and a small cage were set up in #CongressSquarePark.
DIRIGO Management Company, which manages One City Center, issued a statement Monday morning on Friday's protest."President Bob Keegan said that while the company oversees facility management, it does not own One City Center and does not make leasing decisions.
"Keegan said all leasing decisions are made by the building's owner One City Center Associates LLC."

While out and about in #PortlandME, I came across this sign.
The late #JoeSoley was a notorious #SlumLord in #PortlandME. It seems his son #DavidSoley and grandson #JoshSoley are in cahoots with #ICE! David Soley might be connected to #OneCityCenter (where ICE has had an office since 2020). Josh Soley is the owner (and David the manager) of the #ICEFacility in #ScarboroughME.

PORTLAND — "Friday’s protest appeared to be one of the city’s largest in months, dwarfing recent protests that occurred during much warmer weather on hot, sunny summer weekends.
"But it was a frigid January afternoon, and more than 1,000 people turned out anyway. They huddled together, chanting, cheering and holding their signs over the clouds rising from their breaths.
"Real estate was scarce in Monument Square as the demonstrators condemned Trump administration policies, most notably the recent surge of federal immigration enforcement operations in Minnesota and Maine.
"The crowd stretched from One Monument Square to the bus stop across Center Street and lined the opposite side of Congress Street. When they marched, they extended from the square well down Exchange Street. They eventually made it all the way to Commercial Street, with police blocking off roads and forming an escort.
"The protest in Portland was just one of many demonstrations across the U.S. on Friday, which included a general strike where businesses shut down and students walked out of class, from #California, #Arizona and #Colorado, to #Michigan, #Minnesota and Maine.
"More than 200 Maine businesses participated in some capacity, either by closing their doors or donating a portion of profits to groups and organizations helping immigrants. Some businesses lined the square with tables, handing out hot chocolate, coffee and treats to demonstrators. Many area high schoolers — including in Portland and #LewistonME — walked out of or skipped school altogether."

"As I draft this column, Sen. Susan Collins has announced the end of (I can’t believe I’m typing this stupid name) Operation Catch of the Day. (I bet whoever came up with that one thought they were just so funny.) However, Susan Collins’ word is essentially Monopoly money at this point: important to the game and completely worthless in the real world.
"To me it feels like that scene in 'Willow' where the army pretends to have retreated but they’ve actually dug holes in the ground and are hiding to pop out at the most opportune moment, when the castle’s defenses are down. So, keep the whistles handy. Of course, it’s entirely possible that the #ICE weenies did get scared off by the big storm we had last weekend. After all, they’re from away.
"However, even if ICE is gone for the season, Border Patrol will still be here. And I think it’s important to talk about that. Recently, ICE has been getting all the attention for its actions in cities around America, especially, but not exclusively, Minneapolis. This makes sense — they’re huge, flashy, untrained and 'ICE' lends itself to clever wordplay."

LEWISTON — "It was bitter cold and windy Friday afternoon, but Lewiston High School student Evelyn Lenhert wouldn’t have dreamed of missing the #AntiICE protest.
"She feels too passionately about it. She’s too concerned about the prospect of ICE taking away her classmates and their families.
" 'I’m out here,' the freshman said, 'because I fear for the safety of my friends. ICE could come at any second and I’m just very scared about it.'
"Lenhert was one of several dozen students who made the march from the high school on East Avenue to Kennedy Park at Pine and Park streets.
"At the end of classes about 2 p.m., the group of about 60 began walking, holding up signs and stopping now and then to chant at passing traffic.
" 'No justice, no peace,' they chanted, 'get ICE off the streets!' "
