Nick Rockel from Nick's Kōrero <[email protected]>:
'Back in 2023, #National said they would “put an end to postcode lottery #healthcare by delivering more #doctors and #nurses.” As we know, they put in place a regime that made it so difficult to replace staff that we now have an enormous backlog of vacancies, so so much for that commitment.'

The madness of NHS workforce planning continues;
newly qualified nurses (having graduated) are finding it increasingly difficult (or impossible) to get jobs as nurses as the NHS has a recruitment freeze on; it also reflects some good news in that nurse retention (another focus of planning) is rising reducing vacancies in a workforce constrained by budget limitations.
But, to train nurses & not be able to employ them when there's a shortage of nurses is madness!

Deconstructing Nicola: How public finance myths and moral language shape us
Guest post by Searchlight
Catherine Knight
Jun 07, 2026'In the same week New Zealand recorded its highest level of #homelessness in modern history, the Minister of Finance ... delivered a Budget speech built on ... discipline, restraint and fiscal virtue.
'... While families queued at #foodbanks, youth #unemployment surged in the poorest rural communities, and young people continued to leave in droves, the Government’s central narrative was one of belt tightening, bending debt curves and returning the books to surplus.
'This contrast ... reflects a set of public‑finance #myths so deeply embedded in New Zealand’s political culture that they feel like common sense. These myths shrink political imagination, justify #underinvestment and turn economic management into a moral test.
'.....
'Nicola Willis has a first‑class honours degree in English literature and a postgraduate diploma in journalism. She understands rhetoric and how language works instinctively and through training.'...The household metaphor makes investment in #teachers, #nurses, #housing, #science, community wealth‑building, the arts and public #infrastructure look reckless. It makes cuts look responsible, even when those cuts fall hardest on people already struggling.
'... she relies on the “cultural code”, drawing on familiar household metaphors that feel natural even as they distort how New Zealand’s public finances actually work. This is not accidental. It is craft. The Budget is written not just to inform but to shape the moral universe in which political decisions are judged.
'Deconstructing that story as we have here is not cynicism. It is clarity. Willis’s speech is ... a clever fiction about ... who deserves what and what the future should look like, with Nicola Willis cast as a virtuous Eve who did not eat the apple, and those who ... dispute her narrative as profligate devil’s advocates.' -
At #Brigham and Women's Hospital in #Boston, the strike is over with a new contract signed by the Massachusetts Nurses Association, and MGH Brigham, who has just locked out the #nurses in retaliation for having exercised their rights to bargain collectively, and to strike. This is one of many tactics which make organizing a challenge. Companies like MGH Brigham engage in them, because their management knows that organizing works, and that the board and investors expect absolute certainty of cost accounting, to wield corporate power over the lives of workers, lives that might not conform to balance sheets from years gone by. It is the workers who understand & tend to patient needs. Respect the workers. Respect #nurses and all other health workers. See that they have the capacity to save for their children's education.
The new, energized, modern #labor #unions will be a principal activator in bringing a just and sustainable democracy to the USA.

Back To Regular Programming
Photo: mineThis week has been a little weird, but not bad. My incisions from the scalp surgery are healing, and I'll get the stitches out in a few days. It's been pretty amazing how little pain I've had. I was skeptical of not getting pain meds, and being told to take Tylenol, but it's been fine. I haven't even taken Tylenol past the 2nd or 3rd day post-op. I slept a LOT the first few days, and waited to resume the THC for sleep for 4-5 nights, but definitely needed it to help me get back […]https://escapethechaos.blog/2026/07/04/back-to-regular-programming/
