#ICE Is Expanding Across the US at Breakneck Speed. Here’s Where It’s Going Next
ICE plans to lease offices throughout the US as part of a secret, monthslong expansion campaign. WIRED is publishing dozens of these locations.

In #Harlingen, located near the US border with Mexico, a lease has been awarded at 222 East Van Buren, in the same building as the city’s Department of Labor–aligned outpost. (ICE has already detained dozens of Harlingen-area residents.) In the #Woodlands, a district near #Houston, ICE appears poised to move into an office building at 1780 Hughes Landing Boulevard, blocks away from a Primrose preschool. In #ElPaso, ICE is moving into the Epicenter Office Community, a large campus of buildings right off Interstate 10 near many local health providers and other businesses. In #SanAntonio, ICE is considering a move into a building located at 15727 Anthem Parkway, near apartment buildings, dozens of restaurants, and the Methodist Hospital Landmark. In #EaglePass, ICE appears to be looking at a move into a building at 3381 US Highway 277, where at least one government office—the Drug Enforcement Administration—is already located.
"A Trump administration official recently told WIRED that #California and #NewYork are 'next' for the type of fraud investigation that culminated in 3,000 ICE agents in Minneapolis. At least seven leasing projects are underway in California. In #Sacramento, ICE has installed security features at the John E. Moss building ahead of further expansion. The location is already the site of a Justice Department immigration court. In Irvine, a city in Orange County located an hour’s drive from #LosAngeles, ICE is moving into offices on 2020 Main Street, located right next to the airport and a childcare agency. In #VanNuys, a neighborhood of Los Angeles, ICE is expanding its offices at the James C. Corman federal building that also has offices for the IRS and Health and Human Services. Further expansion of ICE offices is also underway throughout the state, in federal buildings in Los Angeles, at San Diego’s Edward J. Schwartz Courthouse and federal building, and in Santa Ana’s federal building. The #SantaAna federal building is located within blocks of a church, the stadium for one of the nation's top high school football programs, and many government services.
"In New York and #NewJersey, ICE is expanding its physical footprint rapidly. In #RoselandNJ, less than an hour’s drive from New York City, ICE is moving into a building at 5 Becker Farm Road. The building is located near the Roseland Child Development Center. In #WoodburyNY, a hamlet in #LongIsland, ICE is moving into offices located at 88 Froehlich Farm Boulevard, near an expedited passport center. In #NewWindsor, New York, a town within driving distance of New York City along the Hudson River known for the Storm King Art Center, ICE is moving into offices at 843 Union Avenue. All three of these locations are within an hour and a half from a warehouse in #ChesterNY, that DHS is pursuing as an immigrant detention center.
"The same pattern plays out in dozens of other cities across the US. ICE’s expansion includes not just its own preexisting space—or sharing an office with other government agencies—but also situates its agents near sensitive civilian locations.
"That often includes places of worship. In #Hyattsville, Maryland, ICE is expanding its offices at the Metro 1 building on 6505 Belcrest Road, which sits a few blocks from a Lutheran church. In #Tennessee, OPLA is planning to move into the #Nashville House office building, a business center in the city near multiple churches. The #OneCityCenter building in #PortlandME, where ICE plans to expand its offices, is within walking distance to at least six churches, a mosque, one synagogue, and a Salvation Army adult rehab center. [Good to know. We'll be there protesting!]
"Several planned ICE office spaces are located near schools and early-childhood care centers. ICE is poised to move into a building on 1000 Westlakes Drive in the #Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, suburb of #Berwyn; the Hillside Elementary School is about a mile away. In #Hartford, Connecticut, OPLA is poised to expand existing ICE office space in the Abraham A. Ribicoff federal building, which sits two blocks from the Betances elementary school. Back in Tennessee, ICE is ready to move into offices at 5904 Ridgeway Center Parkway in Memphis, in a building near the private all-girls Hutchison School. In the #ColumbusOH, suburb of #Westerville, OPLA appears ready to move into a small office building at 774 Park Meadow, near the Oakstone Academy High School. In #MeridianID ICE is moving into the Portico at Meridian Center, which is located near the Spalding STEM Academy high school. And in #OakbrookIL, a suburb of #Chicago, ICE is moving into the Oakbrook Gateway, an office building located near both a Bright Horizons daycare center and a hospice center.
"Many other planned locations are near hospitals and medical offices. In #YorkPA, ICE’s OPLA division has leased space at Yorktowne Medical, a facility with multiple medical offices. In #ColumbiaSC, ICE is poised to move into offices at 1441 Main Street, which sits blocks away from the Prisma Health Baptist Hospital. In #NaplesFL, ICE is poised to move into offices at 75 Vineyards Boulevard, close to Physicians Regional Pine Ridge campus hospital.
"Other locations appear to be strategically situated near buildings that ICE either currently uses or could use to detain immigrants. The #Hyattsville location is about an hour and a half from a warehouse DHS recently purchased that ICE has said will be used to detain immigrants, as is a second office marked for OPLA use in #CockeysvilleMD.
"Among the many ICE leasing projects underway in Florida is Research Commons, a building located in #Orlando at 12249 Science Drive that’s less than 25 minutes away from another warehouse identified by the Post as a potential large-scale detention center. The York, #Pennsylvania, location is also an hour and 20 minutes away from a warehouse recently purchased by ICE for nearly $90 million that a Republican congressman said will be used as a processing and immigrant detention facility.
"In Alexandria, Louisiana, ICE is moving into a building on 1201 3rd Street, located right in the city’s historic downtown center and a 16-minute drive from the Alexandria Staging Facility, where immigrants have been detained, transferred, and then deported.
"#AlexandriaLA has emerged as a key location for ICE’s activities in the state and around the country, and an investigation from The Guardian alleged a pattern of abuse and alleged due process violations at the Alexandria facility that’s operated as a deportation 'hub.'
"This is just a sampling of the dozens and dozens of lease locations in the process of being awarded to ICE in every single GSA leasing region, which spans the entire country and US territories. ICE agents and officers will share buildings with doctors, restaurants, and businesses. They’ll expand existing offices and move in with unrelated government agencies—at 801 Arch Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for example, they’ll share space with the DMV."

"Some Native American tribes say tribal members are being harassed by federal immigration agents, while others fear they could be wrongly caught up in immigration raids.
"The alarm comes as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) says its agents are arresting more than 1,000 undocumented immigrants a day, part of President Trump's push to deport 'millions' of people not authorized to stay in the U.S.
"#ImmigrationRaids in cities such as Chicago and Los Angeles — and Trump's new directives to allow searches in schools and churches in addition to workplaces and homes — have heightened concerns in communities across the country.
" 'My office has received multiple reports from Navajo citizens that they have had negative, and sometimes traumatizing, experiences with federal agents targeting undocumented immigrants,' Navajo President #BuuNygren said in a statement.
"#NavajoNation officials told CNN on Monday that at least 15 Indigenous people in the southwestern U.S. have reported being questioned or detained by immigration officers in the past week.
"The 17.5 million-acre Navajo Nation is in northeastern Arizona, northwestern New Mexico, and southeastern Utah. It's larger than 10 states.
"ICE offices in Utah and Washington, D.C., did not immediately respond to Axios' requests for comment.
"The #MescaleroApache Tribe in New Mexico announced that a member was confronted by ICE agents last week and was asked for ID — first in Spanish, although the member spoke English.
"The #SissetonWahpetonOyate of the #LakeTraverse Reservation in South Dakota said it was temporarily waiving all fees for issuing or replacing tribal IDs amid members' concerns about ICE encounters.
"#Ute Indian Tribe Business Committee — the tribe's governing body — promised in a statement Saturday to "aggressively defend our rights and interests." The tribe offered legal counsel to members who are "improperly detained or questioned," as did the #Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah.
"The #SanJuanSouthernPaiute Tribe, whose land crosses the Utah-Arizona border, advised its citizens to record encounters with ICE, ask for agents' badges and keep their doors closed and ask for a warrant if approached at home.
What they're saying: Trump's immigration executive orders have 'raised concern among our tribal members, particularly regarding the potential targeting of our community by immigration agents,' #ChippewaCree Tribe chairman Harat BaRete said in a statement. The north-central Montana tribe then released a set of guidelines urging members to remain silent, keep ID handy and report encounters to tribal officials." 'The #RosebudSioux Tribe is in the process of assessing the legal effects of the unlawful and unconstitutional Trump administration Executive Orders and will fiercely defend against any threat to the sovereignty,' the South Dakota tribe said in a statement.
"Since the Obama administration, U.S. agents have aggressively targeted human smuggling rings that use isolated #IndigenousLands to try to move undetected.
"Congress didn't grant citizenship to #NativeAmericans until 1924 — a development President Trump's lawyers cited in their attempt to justify his temporarily blocked executive order to #OverturnBirthrightCitizenship.
"The administration's attorneys last week invoked an 1884 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that denied citizenship to members of tribes to argue that 'birth in the United States does not by itself entitle a person to citizenship.'
"Some tribal leaders saw the argument as a threat against their members' U.S. citizenship."

" 'I am Sen. Alex Padilla. I have questions for the secretary,' Padilla said to Noem, which prompted several men to physically push him out of the room. It was unclear who the men were, as several were dressed in plainclothes.
"Padilla's office shared a video of the incident with NBC News. The video shows Padilla being taken into a hallway outside and pushed face forward onto the ground as officers with FBI-identifying vests told the senator to put his hands behind his back. The officers then handcuffed him.
"President Donald Trump's immigration policies — and the administration's handling of demonstrations against those policies — have sparked an outcry in recent days. After protesters clashed with officers from Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Los Angeles on Friday, the president deployed members of the National Guard, and later Marines, to assist local law enforcement. Dozens of demonstrations have taken place across the country in the days that followed.
"Speaking to reporters later Thursday, Padilla said he was receiving a briefing from military officials when he learned Noem was in the same building and decided to join her briefing.
" 'I was there peacefully,' he said. 'At one point, I had a question, and so I began to ask a question. I was almost immediately forcibly removed from the room, I was forced to the ground, and I was handcuffed.'
"He added, 'If this is how this administration responds to a senator with a question, if this is how the Department of Homeland Security responds to a senator with a question, you can only imagine what they’re doing to #FarmWorkers, to #cooks, to #DayLaborers out in the #LosAngeles community and throughout #California and throughout the country.' Estimates show more than eight million undocumented #immigrants work in the United States.
"Last Friday, federal immigration agents swept through the garment district of Los Angeles, setting off protests that have rattled sections of downtown L.A. and have spread to a number of cities across the country.
"For #farmworkers — about 42 percent of whom are undocumented, according to the Agriculture Department — the escalation in arrests has created widespread fear." 'Children are terrified,' Ms. Romero said. 'They don’t want to go to school because they don’t know if their parents will be home when they come back.'
"Local leaders have rebuked the escalation, which could bring hardship to one of California’s agricultural corridors. A handful of federal operations have been conducted in other rural communities in recent weeks. Last month, federal agents pulled over a bus in #AlbionN., and detained 14 immigrants who worked at a nearby farm. In April, three children and their mother were detained at an upstate New York dairy.
"Rural migrants are particularly vulnerable to immigration enforcement because they stand out in towns that are often racially homogenous, said Will Lambek of Migrant Justice, an advocacy organization for farmworkers in #Vermont, where eight dairy workers were detained in April.
"In California, Ms. Davalos said the agents could have made more arrests had the community been less prepared. Once a volunteer spotted officers in the area, an alert was sent through a network of support.
"Federal agents were denied entry to at least nine farms in the Central Coast, Ms. Davalos said. Some growers parked their vehicles in front of their gates. Employees also obscured their cars.
'We demonstrated the power of brave, nonviolent #resistance to #ICE’s tactics of #terror,' Ms. Davalos said, lamenting what she described as politically driven attempts to reach a deportation quota. 'At the end of the day, they’re seizing our family, friends, neighbors and co-workers.'"If federal immigration enforcement activities continue, #FoodProduction will become increasingly difficult, and food prices could rise, warned Bryan Little, senior director of policy advocacy at the California Farm Bureau."

I just read a piece about #Palantir in the latest issue [June 2025] of the #DSA newsletter, "In These Times." A very timely piece indeed!
Palantir and American #TechnoFascism
"A new recruitment campaign appeared on the elite U.S. college campus last April. In schools such as Carnegie Mellon, Cornell and Penn, posters glued to bus stops, with black background, issued a disturbing warning: the time has come for reckoning for the West, before accusing most technology companies of not considering the national interest when they decide what should be built. On the contrary, Palantir, the defense contractor specializing in data analysis and responsible for this recruitment campaign, stated that he does not merely build technological products - to guarantee the future of the United States, but, in fact, to dominate.
"The implicit message of advertising reflects the conviction of Palantir's leaders, including founder #PeterThiel and Chief Executive Officer #AlexKarp, that Silicon Valley's real mandate is to consolidate the military supremacy of the United States and the West, a nostalgic reaction to the happy days of the Cold War and its merger between state, engineering and capital.
"In this version of technological #nationalism, the make America great again translates into an impulse for dominance, of course, against foreign adversaries but also against the "Woke capital," effeminate consumerism and a university system dedicated to social justice and diversity (the Palantir posters were published together with a new initiative that invites talented high school students to "judge the indoctrination" of higher education in exchange for a four-month Palantir scholarship).
"Palantir has strong reason to organize his recruiting career. Although critics retangled when their shares plummeted briefly after Trump's tariff announcement, Palantir's stock market capitalization currently exceeds $270 billion, more than triple its value last September. In addition, the company's ability to establish high-level contacts among national security personnel has generated a series of government contracts linked to the acceleration of #Trumpist #authoritarianism.
"Palantir has already collaborated with #ElonMusk's #SpaceX and the AI and robo robotor #Anduril (another tech company with the theme of The Lord of the Rings led by another #FarRight businessman) to begin building Trump's #GoldenDome, an American version of #Israel's Iron Dome air defense system. It is also working with Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (#DOGE) to create an app programming interface that will allow #HomelandSecurity to track tax data for more undocumented taxpayers to expel.
"In April, Palantir, who has long boasted of his collaborations with military, police and border agents, won a $29.8 million contract with #ICE to improve his #dystopian Immigration Lifecycle Operating System. That is, it is intended to provide molecular and real-time information on immigrants that the government seeks to monitor, arrest and expel. The company is preparing to review ICE's investigative case management system to better track target populations across hundreds of data categories, from eye color to tattoos, job management and social security numbers.
"Palantir's #fascist research and development does not stop at the borders of the United States: the company and Karp have proclaimed their ideological and material support for Israel, which carries out the genocide in Gaza. In January 2024, during an extraordinary board meeting in Tel Aviv, the company announced its strategic alliance with the Israeli Ministry of Defense, providing it with technology for war, possibly including its Artificial Intelligence Platform, sold as a way to incorporate language models-fueled chatbots into real-time decision-making processes in war zones. The company's leadership has made it clear that its conception of Western supremacy implies the uncompromising defense of Zionism abroad and far-right nationalism in the country.
"In all this, it has become clear that Palantir represents the alliance between the technology industry and authoritarian nationalism much more than Musk's clumsy Nazi salutes, sensationalist pronatalism or trolling 'dark #MAGA.' As technology academic Jathan Sadowski recently wrote, 'From the beginning, Palantir's purpose has been to provide... the ontological plan to fascism, helping his ideological objectives come true materially.
"In other words, Palantir is building the digital infrastructure to integrate the multiple forms of violence and state control on which contemporary #authoritarianism is based: from the software needed for mass deportations to AI used in wars against #ColonizedPeoples.
"But Palantir not only builds to dominate, he also wants to tell us why. Less than a month after Trump's inauguration, Karp published his book, The Technological Republic: Hard Power, Soft Belief, and the Future of the West, written with the head of Palantir's affairs, Nicolas W. - Zamiska. The book is a strange and prolific mix of neoconservative texts, pseudo-erudite reflections and corporate pamphlets (and apparently shows strong signs of possible use of artificial intelligence).
"In its attempt to unite the praise of Silicon Valley engineers with a strident demand for rearmament from the West, The Technological Republic draws a vision of the future in which the intuitions about creativity, taken from the study of swarms of bees or Jackson Pollock's paintings, are put at the service of ensuring a broad spectrum technological dominance. At the centre is the regret that a compact liberal elite has exhausted the moral courage and technological dynamism of the West just as it faces the revolution of artificial intelligence and emerging Chinese hegemony. After the vague rhetoric of the cultural war, it is not difficult to perceive Karp and Palantir's angry reaction to the #resistance organized by technological workers through campaigns such as '#NoTechForIce or #TechWorkersCoalition' to the project of building to dominate.
"Just as Karp has underlined his company's commitment to Israeli supremacy, so does his book speak of a 'left' chased by the spectre of #Palestine. The executive director of a company that reaps huge profits from surveillance and data extraction systems, aimed at expelling dissidents and undocumented people, Karp writes with contempt of those who want to remain anonymous during Israel's war camps in #Gaza. Quote a student who says, 'If I give my name, I lose my future.' With an astonishing lack of self-consciousness he comments: 'The protective veil of #anonymity could [...] rob this generation of the opportunity to develop an instinct for true mastery of an idea, of the reward of victory in the public square, as well as the costs of defeat.
"This is the same book that, in a variant of the conspiracy theory of cultural Marxism, Edward Said's Orientalism is the main culprit of the emasculation of an academic world built around Western civilization and, therefore, as one more factor in the hesitant technological supremacy of the United States. As Karp states, the book of the Palestinian-American critic has destabilized - a whole way of being an academic in the university establishment, has been the vehicle through which the academic world would be remade.
"The Technological Republic reveals that contemporary #TechnoNationalism and #TechnoMilitarism have nothing to do with building infrastructure for state control and violence, but also with the promotion of an indistinguishable ideology of those who try to sell you something. Palantir reaps benefits not only from the way fear of migrants, artificial intelligence, the upcoming wars waged by drone swarms, mobilizes the resources of governments, but also from speech and uproar. His company's stock market capitalization has quadrupled in the past year, far surpassing revenue-derived growth. This vacuum is filled with speculation, that is, with words and ideas about the future. The future Karp sells is one in which the alternative is ruin (China geopolitical supremacy) or (American) dominance. Behind all the complaints of The Technological Republic about the crisis of confidence in the West, what Karp really wants us to believe is in Palantir, that is, the old business of war, racism and repression marketed through a brilliant new interface."

Wells residents split on town's decision to pause agreement with ICE

Thu, May 22nd 2025WELLS (WGME) -- "This week, the Wells Police Department decided to freeze its partnership with ICE.
"The chief says it's in part because of a bill before the state legislature that would ban local police from working directly with ICE.
"The Wells Police Department is the only known department in Maine to sign a contract with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, better known as ICE.
"But the police chief says they never intended to arrest immigrants.
" 'I'd like to reiterate that at no point was there ever any intent on doing proactive immigration enforcement,' Wells Police Chief Jo-Ann Putnam said.
"The now-frozen agreement set off alarms among Wells residents and seasonal businesses that rely on young people with visas to fill summer jobs, including those from Central and South America.
"CBS13 spoke with a young Venezuelan woman who is working in Wells on an H-2B visa. She says even though she's here legally, she doesn't like the idea of Wells police working with ICE agents.
"Neither does Judy Pettinga.
"The Wells Beach store owner says all this does is frighten foreign workers who are here legally."

Updated Thu, May 22nd 2025LEWISTON (WGME) - "The #CantonWok restaurant in Lewiston has closed its doors after its owner, #XingFengDong, was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on May 6.
"Dong, a 46-year-old Chinese national, is currently held without bail at the Cumberland County Jail. The records do not indicate why he was arrested.
"Dong's brother, Xing Bi Dong, expressed confusion and concern over the arrest. Speaking through a translator, he said, 'He just hopes the government can give his brother a chance.' He described his brother as 'a hard worker, a nice person, he has two kids, and he is a good boss for this restaurant.'
"Xing Bi Dong added that his brother was working with immigration authorities to obtain his green card and does not understand why he was taken into custody.
" 'He doesn't understand why the government took his brother to jail and left them feeling very sad, left the kids with no father,' Xing Bi Dong said.
"The closure of Canton Wok, which has been open on Lisbon Street for two decades, has left around eight employees, including Xing Bi Dong, out of work. The arrest has also raised concerns within Lewiston's immigrant community."

Thu, May 22nd 2025LEWISTON, Maine (WGME) -- "A Chinese food restaurant in Lewiston has shut down, and the owner has been taken to jail in the custody of ICE.
"According to federal records, 46-year-old #XingFengDong is being held at the Cumberland County Jail in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
"Dong is listed as a native of China and was taken into custody May 6.
"According to city records, Dong operates the Canton Wok restaurant on Lisbon Street.
"The restaurant has been open for almost 20 years, but now there is a simple 'closed' sign hanging at the entrance and no sign of any employees.
"The last Facebook post from the restaurant was on May 1, announcing Mother’s Day specials.
"Lewiston police said they were not notified about the arrest of Dong.
" 'Canton Wok is a long-standing Lewiston business and this news is surprising. I’m in the process of trying to find out more information,' Lewiston Mayor Carl Sheline said.
"It is unclear if or when the restaurant will reopen but on the restaurant’s website it says Canton Wok is permanently closed."

Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren said in a Jan. 24 news release that his 'office has received multiple reports from Navajo citizens that they have had negative, and sometimes traumatizing, experiences with federal agents targeting undocumented immigrants in the Southwest.'
"'We now know that Navajo people and enrolled members of other tribes are being detained in Phoenix and other cities by #ICE,' Navajo Nation Council Speaker Crystalyne Curley said during a Naabik’íyáti’ committee meeting on Jan. 23."

#NativeAmerican tribes say #ICE harassing members amid raids

Russell Contreras, January 28, 2025"Some Native American tribes say tribal members are being harassed by federal immigration agents, while others fear they could be wrongly caught up in immigration raids.
Why it matters: The angst among some #Indigenous tribes reflects the confusion and fear even among legal citizens during the #Trump administration's immigration raids.
The big picture: Several tribes have issued warnings and advice to their members based on what they say have been encounters in which U.S. immigration agents have demanded proof of citizenship — episodes that the tribes have linked to #RacialProfiling.
The alarm comes as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) says its agents are arresting more than 1,000 undocumented immigrants a day, part of President Trump's push to deport "millions" of people not authorized to stay in the U.S.
Immigration raids in cities such as Chicago and Los Angeles — and Trump's new directives to allow searches in schools and churches in addition to workplaces and homes — have heightened concerns in communities across the country.
Zoom in: The #NavajoNation, one of the nation's largest tribes, said federal immigration agents have been questioning its members.
"My office has received multiple reports from Navajo citizens that they have had negative, and sometimes traumatizing, experiences with federal agents targeting undocumented immigrants," Navajo President #BuuNygren said in a statement.
Navajo Nation officials told CNN on Monday that at least 15 Indigenous people in the southwestern U.S. have reported being questioned or detained by immigration officers in the past week.
The 17.5 million-acre Navajo Nation is in northeastern Arizona, northwestern New Mexico, and southeastern Utah. It's larger than 10 states.
ICE offices in Utah and Washington, D.C., did not immediately respond to Axios' requests for comment.
Zoom out: The #MescaleroApache Tribe in New Mexico announced that a member was confronted by ICE agents last week and was asked for ID — first in Spanish, although the member spoke English.
The #SissetonWahpetonOyate of the Lake Traverse Reservation in South Dakota said it was temporarily waiving all fees for issuing or replacing tribal IDs amid members' concerns about ICE encounters.
#Ute Indian Tribe Business Committee — the tribe's governing body — promised in a statement Saturday to "aggressively defend our rights and interests."
The tribe offered legal counsel to members who are "improperly detained or questioned," as did the Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah.The San Juan Southern #Paiute Tribe, whose land crosses the Utah-Arizona border, advised its citizens to record encounters with ICE, ask for agents' badges and keep their doors closed and ask for a warrant if approached at home.
What they're saying: Trump's immigration executive orders have "raised concern among our tribal members, particularly regarding the potential targeting of our community by immigration agents," #ChippewaCree Tribe chairman Harat BaRete said in a statement.
The north-central Montana tribe then released a set of guidelines urging members to remain silent, keep ID handy and report encounters to tribal officials.
"The #RosebudSioux Tribe is in the process of assessing the legal effects of the unlawful and unconstitutional Trump administration Executive Orders and will fiercely defend against any threat to the sovereignty," the South Dakota tribe said in a statement.Between the lines: It's not unusual for ICE or DEA agents to enter tribal lands for immigration or drug enforcement.
Since the Obama administration, U.S. agents have aggressively targeted human smuggling rings that use isolated Indigenous lands to try to move undetected.
Congress didn't grant citizenship to Native Americans until 1924 — a development President Trump's lawyers cited in their attempt to justify his temporarily blocked executive order to overturn birthright citizenship.
The administration's attorneys last week invoked an 1884 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that denied citizenship to members of tribes to argue that "birth in the United States does not by itself entitle a person to citizenship."
Some tribal leaders saw the argument as a threat against their members' U.S. citizenship."
