  1. #Mainers organize to push #ICEOut of #ScarboroughME, file petition to congressional delegation

The Scarborough Democratic Town Committee leadership submitted a petition requesting a meeting to review and remove the ICE facility

    Salomé Cloteaux
    Sept 15, 2026

SCARBOROUGH — "About 40 people — half of them wearing white T-shirts with “ICE” crossed out inside a red circle — gathered Monday night to oppose the presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, and especially the ICE detention facility, in Scarborough.
In the weeks following the killing of Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero in Biddeford, many southern Maine residents expressed grief and anger, unsure what power they had against the federal agency. Two months later, those gathered in Scarborough were turning their feelings into action at an “ICE Out” community organizing meeting.
The actions of ICE agents in Scarborough are incompatible with the values, laws and rights of their community, they said.
“Tonight isn’t just another protest or meeting,” organizer Jennifer Jortberg said at Scarborough Town Hall to begin the meeting. “Tonight, we organize.”
Ahead of the meeting, the Scarborough Democratic Town Committee leadership submitted a petition to Maine’s congressional delegation requesting a meeting to review and remove the ICE facility, citing residents’ heightened concerns since Guerrero’s killing and Scarborough resident Jonas Manywa’s detention at the facility."

  2. ‘The gap is gone!’ New stretch of #EasternTrail opens 15 months early

The 1.6-mile segment of the Eastern Trail linking #ScarboroughME and #SouthPortlandME opened Thursday.

by Salomé Cloteaux, August 7, 2026

SOUTH PORTLAND — "Finally, the gap is closed. After over a decade of planning, setbacks, fundraising and permitting, the 'Close the Gap' project opening a key segment of the Eastern Trail is finished, 15 months ahead of schedule.
The 1.6-mile section of the Eastern Trail connecting Scarborough and South Portland opened Thursday in front of a few hundred cyclists, walkers and runners who attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

"Closing the gap — between the Wainwright Sports Complex in South Portland and the Nonesuch River in Scarborough — created a continuous 16-mile trail without on-road gaps from Bug Light Park to downtown Saco. It was a long-awaited step to fully connecting the #EasternTrail, a 65-mile off-road trail from South Portland to #KitteryME.

" 'It’s also about more than just opening a section of trail; it’s about connecting communities and fulfilling a vision that has been years in the making,' South Portland Mayor Elyse Tipton said. “The gap is gone!' "

  3. #Protestors in #ScarboroughME call for #ICE to leave #Maine, demand action from leaders

A coalition of immigrant advocates, local leaders and concerned residents are holding an "emergency protest" after ICE agents shot and killed a Colombian man in Biddeford on Monday.

About 200 people gathered in front of the ICE facility in Scarborough a day after federal agents shot and killed a man in Biddeford.

SCARBOROUGH, Maine — "A group of about 200 local activists, elected officials, community organizations and faith leaders are holding an 'emergency protest' outside the Scarborough ICE facility a day after the shooting death of a Colombian man in #BiddefordME.

"On Monday, 26-year-old #JoanSebastianGuerrero was shot and killed by ICE, leaving behind a wife, 3-year-old child, and sister.

"The U.S. Department of Homeland Security says an ICE officer 'fearing for public safety' [BULLSHIT!] shot and killed the driver. It happened as agents were watching a home of someone they believed was in the country illegally and has a final order of removal from the country.

"Protestors called for the removal of all ICE agents in Maine and the release of all people detained by federal agents.

" 'The governor has to issue a proclamation, saying that ICE is not allowed in our state, and the Attorney General should direct the State Troopers to be filing criminal charges against the murderers in our community,' said @Todd , one of the organizers of the protest.

"Representatives from more than 20 organizations attended the protest including: #MaineYouthPower, Maine Small Businesses Association, Maine #DemocraticSocialists of America, the Maine #WomensLobby, #MaineCoalitionForPalestine, the #MaineGreenParty, #MainePRIDE, #MaineTransnet and the Maine #AFLCIO."

  6. #Maine municipal leaders to vote on #DatacenterMoratoriums amid concerns

    by Brad Rogers,WGME

Updated Thu, May 21, 2026 at 5:33 AM

SCARBOROUGH, Maine (WGME) -- "New massive data centers are being proposed in #ScarboroughME, #SanfordME, #JayME and other Maine communities, raising concerns among some Mainers in those communities.

"A developer wants to build the #ScarboroughTechnologyPark — a 140,000-square-foot data center with supporting infrastructure on 52 acres west of the Maine Turnpike and north of #TwoRodRoad.

"Town leaders in Scarborough say they need time to study the impacts of the proposed project, while some neighbors are already voicing opposition.

" 'This is a pretty quiet neighborhood, and it’s going to just destroy the neighborhood and the property values,' said Warren Hamilton, who opposes the #datacenter planned behind his home."

  7. #BrunswickME considers pause on #datacenter proposals

There will be a public hearing on the proposed moratorium on June 1.

by Katie Langley, Posted May 19, 2026, Updated May 20

"Brunswick is among several Maine municipalities considering moratoriums on large-scale data centers after Gov. #JanetMills vetoed a bill that would have temporarily restricted such developments.

"At a Monday night meeting, Brunswick’s town councilors set a June 1 public hearing on the proposed moratorium. If passed, the moratorium would give the town 180 days to gather information on the impact of data centers and set regulations on their development.

"The drafted moratorium closely mirrors other temporary policies being considered in towns and cities including #WestbrookME, which uses the same law firm as Brunswick.

"Town councilors on Monday removed a section in the draft moratorium that defined data centers as having a gross floor area of at least 10,000 square feet or electrical capacities of at least 20 megawatts. Instead, data center projects with an electrical capacity of 1 megawatt or more would be prohibited during the moratorium period.

"Brunswick has an existing, smaller-scale data center on #BrunswickLanding, owned by internet company #FirstLight, that town leaders have said has not been an issue and does not store artificial intelligence data.

"Town Manager Julia Henze said Monday night that there are no proposals for data centers on the horizon for Brunswick, but a moratorium would give the council time to update town ordinances and be prepared for such projects.

"Other municipalities, including #SanfordME and #ScarboroughME, are considering data center moratoriums in response to already proposed projects."

  8. #JanetMills vetoed a #DataCenter pause. Towns are looking to pass their own.

At least four municipalities have proposed their own moratoriums on new data center development while they refine local regulations.

by Daniel Kool, May 18, 2026

"Without a statewide moratorium on large data center development, a patchwork of local laws appears to be forming in #Maine.

"Weeks after Gov. Janet Mills vetoed a bill to temporarily restrict permitting for new data centers of 20 megawatts or more, at least four towns and cities are considering enacting their own moratoriums. The local pauses are designed to give officials time to review their zoning rules and develop new regulations for large data centers — should they ever come to town.

"Some, like those in Sanford and Scarborough, come as developers have already proposed building data centers in town. Others, like in Brunswick and Westbrook, are designed to get ahead of potential data center construction. All four communities plan to discuss their proposals at meetings this week.

"Though these local proposals have taken on new urgency in a lieu of a broader moratorium, they are not the first of their kind. The Bangor City Council unanimously passed a city-wide pause in April, days before Mills shot down the statewide effort. Anne Krieg, the town’s director of development, said they 'didn’t want to wait for the state,' as development pressure mounted."

  11. Oh, and of course, I knew once #AmazonCorp announced plans to build a warehouse in #GorhamME, the #GorhamConnector would rear its ugly head again... And even though #JanetMills' brother #PeterMills is no longer in charge of #MDOT doesn't mean the new director won't be pushing this... Instead of a light rail system or rapid bus transit on the existing roads (and / or safer bike lanes. I knew friends who used to bike from Gorham to Portland, but it got too dangerous because of a lack of dedicated bike lanes and speeders).

#MDOT will launch new examination of traffic issues west of Portland

The state study will focus on Gorham, #ScarboroughME, #SouthPortlandME and #WestbrookME.

    Robert Lowell, April 22, 2026

Excerpt: "The announcement of the new study comes just days before Amazon goes to the Gorham Planning Board on May 4, seeking approval for a warehouse and distribution center on Main Street (Route 25). Traffic will likely be one issue fueling concerns about the Amazon project.

"The study also comes in the aftermath of plans the Maine Turnpike Authority shelved last year for a four-lane toll road connector to Gorham. The connector was aimed at reducing commuter rush-hour traffic in the routes 22 and 114 commuter corridor [which the #Maine Legislature failed to make go away!]

"A connector would have linked the roundabout at South Street (Route 114) and the southerly end of Gorham’s Bernard Rines Bypass with the turnpike’s Exit 45 in South Portland. The connector proposal was met with a public outcry because it called for cutting a swath through #SmilingHillFarm in #WestbrookME."

  12. This is potentially a game-changer when it comes to dealing with #Knotweed (which just laughs at #Glyphosate)!

#MeshTech: A New Strategy for Managing Knotweed

    February 24, 2026

"Knotweed (#Reynoutria spp.) is a severely invasive plant originating from Eastern Asia. Introduced to the East Coast in the late 1800s as an ornamental, knotweed has since become ubiquitous across North America, reaching over 40 US states and 8 Canadian provinces. Knotweed has proven extremely detrimental to a wide variety of ecosystems in which it has established. Forming tall, dense thickets, knotweed shades out native plants, preventing them from growing. Additionally, knotweed is #allelopathic, meaning it releases organic compounds into the soil that inhibits the growth of native plant species.

Knotweed also increases erosion along streams and riverbanks. By shading out native groundcover species and reducing the diverse root reinforcement provided by native species in riparian zones, riverbanks lose considerably more soil when infested with stands of knotweed (Hammer 2019, Matte et al. 2021). This erosion can increase turbidity of waterways, potentially affecting fish and other aquatic species (Henley et al. 2000). The reduction of native plants in riparian zones paired with winter dieback of knotweed stems also leaves riverbanks extremely vulnerable to winter and early spring flooding. This degradation of the riparian area creates a feedback loop in which floods carry knotweed propagules downstream, where they can colonize and increase erosion in new areas (Colleran et al. 2020).

Historically, management of knotweed has been extremely time-and-resource intensive. Large populations require years of consistent treatment, often combining mechanical and chemical approaches to be effective. This commitment to diligent, multi-year mechanical treatment can be discouraging and can lead many to abandon treatment plans before completion. However, a new knotweed management technique could reduce labor inputs.

Developed by Dr. Eric Donnelly, the MeshTech management technique has produced promising results at managing the growth and spread of knotweed while dramatically reducing labor inputs. This method involves cutting knotweed stems down to the soil level and laying -inch galvanized steel hardware fencing over the cut stems. When knotweed resprouts, it grows through the openings in the fencing. As stems mature and thicken, the metal fencing will begin to cut into the stems.

The knotweed will continue to grow through the fencing, effectively girdling itself at its base. This method aims to impact knotweed's nutrient pathways while also damaging the structural integrity of the plant. Alone, this method cannot eradicate knotweed populations. However, the MeshTech method can potentially reduce the health and vigor of knotweed, thus reducing the amount of cutting required in a growing season and the rate of spread in an area.

At the #PleasantHillPreserve in #ScarboroughME, the #ScarboroughLandTrust (#SLT) has begun implementing the MeshTech method to manage a portion of their knotweed infestation. An effort led by SLTs #Stewardship Director Sami Wolf and Nathan Hjort, owner of Absolutely Complete Property Services, initial results indicate that the hardware fencing is proving successful. The knotweed forced to grow through the hardware fencing at Pleasant Hill Preserve showed clear signs of strain. Stems demonstrated significantly stunted growth and had even begun flowering early, an indication that a plant is under stress. While knotweed struggled to grow through the -inch holes, #NativeFlora had begun to sprout up through the hardware fencing. Other knotweed management practices, such as #tarping or mowing, often discourage the growth of native species in a management area. Over time, the presence of native flora could provide an extra level of #BioticResistance that could help slow the growth of knotweed and help kickstart #NativeRevegetation efforts. Eventually, supplemental plantings of native woody species can take place by cutting openings in the fence to allow for these larger species to grow. The fence can also be easily staked down, preventing knotweed or moving water from moving it out of place.

It is important to note that knotweed is a resilient plant and there is no single management action alone that will completely eliminate a population. The most effective knotweed management strategies use creative combinations of multiple approaches. Knotweed is a rhizomatous species, meaning it has an extensive, underground nutrient storage system made up of horizontal rhizomes that store nutrients. Draining this underground nutrient storage is the key to effectively managing an infestation. Consistent cutting of knotweed forces the plant to exhaust its below ground resources. By combining a cutting regimen with the MeshTech method, land managers could potentially see a significant reduction in their management timeline.

The effectiveness of this method provides promising implications for the future of knotweed management in Maine. Paired with consistent management, the MeshTech method could provide Maine with another tool to mitigate the spread of knotweed and reduce our reliance on chemical treatments."

  13. Dozens gather in protest outside #ScarboroughME #ICE facility

U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, who visited an #ICEFacility in Massachusetts on Thursday, stopped by the protest Friday afternoon.

    Drew Johnson, February 20, 2026

SCARBOROUGH — "#Protesters gathered outside the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility here on Friday to voice dismay over the agency’s practices in Maine and elsewhere.
    Nearly 100 people — including U.S. Rep. #ChelliePingree — had gathered along #MansonLibbyRoad by the protest’s 3:30 p.m. start time, according to a reporter’s count.

"Protesters chatted, held signs and flags, and waved as drivers honked their horns. Organizers lined the street with caution tape to designate where demonstrators ought to congregate and to keep them out of the roadway.

"Pingree, D-1st District, complimented demonstrators on their signs and stopped to chat with some and answer questions.

" 'Even though the surge has slowed down here in Maine, we still have a lot of activity,' Pingree said."

    #ICE facility planned in Scarborough

    May 5, 2021
By Ulya Aligulova | Photos Joseph Shaw

"Construction of a new U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement holding facility located at 40 Manson Libby Road in Scarborough is set to be completed in spring 2021. It will share the building with a #VeteransAdministration group that provides therapy and support to veterans.

"The news of the facility first broke in February 2020 when Bangor Daily News reported on an email they obtained, under the Freedom of Information Act, from Alisa Wofford, a leasing specialist with the U.S. General Services Administration, an agency that manages federal building contracts. '[T]his space will be low key and not brightly advertised as an ICE location,' Wofford wrote to other government officials. 'The GSA property manager does not speculate that protests will be a problem for the vet center.' According to the email, ICE will process, fingerprint, and detain people suspected of immigration violations, keeping them in onsite holding rooms before transporting them in unmarked vans to an overnight detention facility elsewhere, if necessary.

"At present, people apprehended by the agency and waiting for immigration court proceedings are generally held at the Cumberland County Jail before being moved out of state. According to ICE’s website, the nearest Enforcement and Removal Operations field office, whose area of responsibility includes Maine, is in Boston. However, in October 2019, the agency announced the opening of an administrative office in downtown Portland at One City Center, which also has one holding cell. The news of the two facilities came as the number of people arrested by ICE spiked across the country. In 2019, ICE apprehended over 1.1 million people, a rise of nearly 70% from the previous fiscal year. In 2020, the agency convicted nearly 400,000 people and deported over 185,000 noncitizens from the U.S.

"Scarborough town officials were not aware of the plans for the facility before the Bangor Daily News broke the story. #JoshSoley, the owner of the industrial building at 40 Manson Libby Road, signed a 15-year-lease with the GSA in April 2019. 'This was a private transaction between a property owner and the federal government that complied with all the zoning requirements and the council doesn’t have any authority to approve or disapprove leases between the parties,' said Scarborough Town Council Chief Paul Johnson. 'We’ve since changed our zoning laws so that overnight and detention facilities will no longer be allowed. The new zoning would also prevent this facility from expanding.' "

    #FoodWaste and #Composting

"Did you know that almost a third of what we throw away is leftover or spoiled food? If Maine is to achieve a 50% recycling rate, we need to recover our food waste, too – it’s worth the weight!

"ecomaine added food waste recycling to our sustainable waste management solutions in order to help Maine reach its recycling goal. We continue to build food waste recycling capacity in southern Maine, serving as a central collection point for grocery stores, institutions, and participating cities and towns.

"Collected food waste is transported to #ExeterME’s #AgriEnergy [#AgricycleEnergy] to be de-packaged and anaerobically digested to produce sustainable power, organic farm #fertilizer, and cow bedding for the #Maine family dairy farm #StonyvaleFarm. Any packaging removed from the food waste is delivered back to ecomaine to be burned for energy—keeping all of it out of our #landfills!

"By making #composting, anaerobic digestion, and food waste recycling so easy, we encourage our communities to dispose of their waste responsibly.

"For more on compost that’s 'Worth The Weight,' check out our informational pamphlet!

    #BackyardComposting

"Backyard composting is one of the easiest ways to keep organic material out of the trash. It also has some other great advantages:

    - It doesn’t weigh your trash down as much.
    - It doesn’t get into ecomaine‘s waste-to-energy plant, making our combustion more damp and less efficient.
    - It’s easy – and “grass-cycling” (leaving clippings on the lawn) is better for your grass!
    - It saves Maine’s towns money on collection and hauling.
    - And it saves YOU money on trash bags!

"There are no trucks or driving involved – no carbon emissions! You just walk it out to your bin, and that’s it.

"In the end, composting produces rich #soil for flower and vegetable #gardens – without paying for it (again) at the store.

    Drop Off Locations

"If you’re looking for a compost drop-off location, instead of putting it in your backyard, here are a few… If you know of one that’s not here, let us know! (Some facilities may be for residents only; we advise calling ahead if you’re not sure.)

[I've found that transfer stations are usually residents only...]

Downed poles hit, trap cars in #ScarboroughME

A total of five poles came down and three vehicles were either hit or trapped

SCARBOROUGH, Maine — "A strong thunderstorm moved through the Portland area Tuesday evening with some strong wind gusts between 50 and 60 miles per hour.

"Police said a total of five poles in a row came down along Pleasant Hill Road just after 7 p.m., blocking the roadway. Central Maine Power described it as severe pole damage.

"Three vehicles were either hit by the falling poles or trapped between the poles and wires.

"Police said no one was hurt, but the road was closed for a while Tuesday night while the poles and wires were cleared and CMP put up new wires.

"At about 8 a.m. Wednesday, CMP was reporting about 900 customers without power scattered across the service area."

As temperatures rise, communities across Maine open cooling centers to keep residents safe from the elements.

AUGUSTA, Maine — "Summer has arrived in Maine, bringing rising temperatures and longer days. But when the heat becomes dangerous or oppressive, community cooling centers help support those who need an escape from the heat and humidity.

"The centers are often located in public spaces, such as recreation centers or libraries. They typically open for short-term purposes.

"While the primary purpose is to save lives by getting people out of potentially dangerous heat conditions, cooling centers may also provide charging stations, showers, or food.

"The latest listings for cooling centers are on the Maine Emergency Management Agency's [#MEMA] website. We've included a roundup here as well as additional resources to help you stay safe this summer when temperatures rise.

"According to the Maine Emergency Management Agency, heat-related illnesses in the state more often occur when temperatures reach the mid-80s or higher.

“Heat-related illnesses, like heat exhaustion or heat stroke, happen when the body is not able to properly cool itself,” according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “While the body normally cools itself by sweating, during extreme heat, this might not be enough. In these cases, a person's body temperature rises faster "

SCARBOROUGH (WGME) -- "People lined a street in Scarborough Thursday to protest the Trump administration. Scarborough Democrats organized the demonstration.

" 'This is not just a Democratic Party issue, this is an American issue, and we all should be standing out waving signs, voting especially, to show what we stand for as Americans,' Jonathan Anderson of the Scarborough Democratic Committee said.

" 'People are great, and people are kind, and we are not the way our President is, which is cruel,' protester Nina McKee said."

"The Scarborough Community Garden is addressing #hunger in our community by growing nourishing vegetables for neighbors who struggle to put healthy food on the table. Located in #ScarboroughMaine, we broke ground in the Fall of 2014 on our first garden located at St. Nicholas Episcopal Church. We began planting and harvesting in 2015. Two more gardens, one at Blue Point Congregational Church and one at Hillcrest Retirement Community, were soon established in 2017. All three gardens continue to grow an abundance of delicious produce for the #ScarboroughFoodPantry and our neighbors."
