This reminds me of Caroline Herschel. Blind in one eye, and never growing to more than 1.3 m (4 feet 3 inches), her mother felt she was not marriageable and good for no more than drudgery and life as a servant. Her father did try to provide some musical and mathematical education, despite the opposition of his spouse. When her brother William went to England to pursue his musical career she was allowed to go with him, initially working as a singer. When William turned to astronomy, Caroline became more than just his assistant, discovering many deep sky objects and multiple comets. During her brother's large-scale surveys of the sky, she was responsible for recording all observations in real-time, including calculating the positions of objects with reference to known stars, and then processing the raw data the following day.
To give an idea of the scale of this work, Caroline had to build an complete star catalog to replace the Flamsteed catalog, in the course of which she discovered over 500 additional reference stars.
When William became Astronomer Royal, Caroline was also granted paid employment at the royal observatory - becoming the first female professional astronomer in (known) history.
Her relationship to singing and astronomy was deeply ambivalent, describing herself as her brother's "well-trained puppy". But she also showed clear enthusiasm for astronomy.
Her astronomical career came to an end when a German relative became sick and she left the observatory (and England) to become a full-time carer. She however continued to correspond with other scientists in this period.
