I just read a post by someone who doesn't want people to mention rape when they're discussing the lack of consent in opt-out technology. Which is going to make it pretty hard to connect lack of consent culture in tech to rape culture in general.

Let me be very clear, as someone who survived a violent and horrific rape, and other forms of sexual assault: rape culture is part of why my violent rape happened. Including specifically rape culture in tech.

When tech bros think that consent doesn't matter, more rape will happen. When consent is disregarded in any area, more rape will happen.

This is HOW rape culture works. This is WHY we need to talk about rape when we talk about consent, or the lack thereof, in other, less severe matters.

If you are having discussions about consent in technology and you are NOT referencing rape culture, I am skeptical of your analysis.

Because rape is the at the top of the rape culture pyramid; things like lack of consent in tech are closer to the ground. Rape culture supports rape. Silence supports rape culture.

Regular reminder to not use violent sexualized language to talk about toxic people.

Victims of sexualized violence, no matter their age, often blame themselves. That is a normal psychological reaction to traumatizing abuse. When you say "fuck nazis" you're basically telling women, men, non-binary grownups and children victimized:
"Yes its okay to use sexualized violence against bad people. They deserve it."
And that means:
"You must have deserved it too, which means you're as bad as a nazi."

Show empathy to the victims by not normalizing the acts and language of the perpetrators.

If you want to be feminist living in our patriarchal systems, you have to practice. Try, mess up, try again, make it a habit to redirect your brain to not degrade women.

I see all the time how pervasive casual misogyny is in boys' culture, and how it's not one thing I say to my son that will shift that but a practice of questioning and prioritizing.

@onepict points are haunting and sear through the misogynist b.s. And it's not just that the men wiping their AI girlfriends' memories are being horror movie bros, it's that every man casually cussing out a femme AI voice for getting something wrong, mocking it in hundreds of youtube videos or watching those videos, yelling demands, is practicing misogyny. Making degrading women *more* of a habit, of a default, *more* of a trait of their own personality.

It's not that these practices are inherently bad because AI feelings matter, but that they push men deeper into the quicksand of sexist rape culture.

I have founded a group for abuse survivors (of past or present abuse) and those who question whether they were or are experiencing or witnessing abuse or coercive control or undue influence or someone is using power over them and retaliating against them when they don't "behave".

I myself survived childhood sexual abuse, incest, abuse by a cult, my therapist, psychiatry nurses, sibling, friends, queerplatonic partner/girlfriend, roommate and harrassment from a nazi neighbor plus landlords. I kinda got a bad start to life (in germany) and then people tended to make it worse instead of helping me or they took advantage of me.

So I learned a lot about what does and doesn't help!

And I want to help you out, whether you went through something you fear no one will believe or be able to stomach hearing about, or you think it was probably nothing and you overreact. You don't overreact! Nothing is too small to be worth talking about.

I'm making a space to have a warm, supportive, good vibes atmosphere that we co-create together. We'll help each other grow and see through confusions and distortions of the truth and gain more agency, to make choices, decisions and do stuff and have an impact on the world.

We'll also have fun and laugh and cry and eat cookies and discover what it's like to argue with someone who doesn't slice you to ribbons emotionally.

Anyone is welcome regardless of age, gender, ability, neurotype, location or background. I just ask that you help make the group a good space, be that by complaining when everyone else is too polite to say anything or by listening or by sharing. Please don't worry that by joining you'll take up too much space or take resources away from someone who might need them more — you ARE our space and our resources!

Gisele Pelicot’s ex husband sentenced to twenty years in prison - and all fifty of the men tried with him have been found guilty and will serve jail time. Shame HAS changed sides.

I’m incredibly grateful for what Gisele has accomplished. She flipped the narrative. She gave up her right to privacy and anonymity so that the whole world could see what these monsters did to her. She refused to be made into a victim, refused to be blamed or shamed for what they did to her.

I wrote an article about her story - the role medical misogyny played in what happened to her and why ‘Not All Men’ rings hollow to us right now.

I expressly said that now is NOT the time to yell ‘Not All Men’ at us - because in this particular case - it was a great many men. Men from all ages, backgrounds and walks of life.

It was her own husband of fifty years. Her neighbour. Fathers and husbands. It was too many men.

The men who were approached by her husband and declined to assault Gisele? They didn’t go to the police. They didn’t get her help. They patted themselves on the back for being ‘good men’ for simply not raping an unconscious woman.

The worst part? We may never know how many of them there were.

I was scared to share this article. I was afraid of blowback from people who are unwilling and/or unable to accept just how bad rape culture is. How deep the rot of patriarchy goes.

One of the first comments I got was a man telling me to stop painting all men as rapists. That most men are ‘very fond’ of women. That he ‘likes them a lot’ and that I shouldn’t worry so much because he’s sending me a hug.

He literally commented with ‘not all men’ on an article pleading with men to stop yelling over us. And he saw absolutely nothing wrong with this. In fact - he went on to say that this case is an anomaly and it’s what prisons are for - but most men are good and I need to recognize that.

Let me say this one more time - the ONLY thing about this case that’s an anomaly is the sheer scope and horror of it.

Rape is not an anomaly. It’s almost never perpetrated by a stranger. The vast majority of rapes are committed by someone the woman knew and trusted and believed to be a ‘good man.’

You don’t know until it’s too late - and that’s exactly why we’re asking you to stop saying ‘Not All Men.’

Please - listen to us. Learn. Speak up FOR us instead of OVER us. Be an ally and condemn these acts instead of trying to act like they’re the outliers. They aren’t.

This happens too damn much, we are fed up, and we won’t be silent any longer.

Shame IS changing sides and it will be because we won’t back down.
