  1. Interesting: when buying non-returnable tickets from Warsaw to Vilnius, LTG Link is happy to return the bicycle supplement of 10€ if you change your mind and decide to go without it. PKP Intercity, on the other hand, doesn't let you do that for the same connection.

  2. Oh boy. Plastics? Well, we need less of those anyways (and maybe actually recycle them?). Pharmaceuticals? Yeah, that's a BIG problem! Maybe manufacture them in smaller factories locally. As for fertilizer? Let's see... #Urea, #nitrogen and #ammonia -- all can come from urine! And sulphur? Grow more garlic and onions rather than use oil production byproducts. WTF!

"Around 30% of fertilizer products go through the Strait of Hormuz. Quatar is the world’s biggest producer of urea, a key input to fertiliser manufacture. The region also produces around 35% of the urea and 23% of the ammonia, another feedstock for nitrogenous fertiliser, which is exported globally. Sulphur, another component of fertiliser manufacture, is also produced in the region as a by-product of oil production."

  5. New #SodiumIon battery stores twice the energy and #desalinates #seawater

    Date: February 19, 2026
    Source: University of Surrey

Summary: A surprising breakthrough could help sodium-ion batteries rival lithium—and even turn seawater into drinking water. Scientists discovered that keeping water inside a key battery material, instead of removing it as traditionally done, dramatically boosts performance. The “wet” version stores nearly twice as much charge, charges faster, and remains stable for hundreds of cycles, placing it among the top-performing sodium battery materials ever reported.

"In research published in the Journal of Materials Chemistry A, scientists examined sodium vanadium oxide, a well-known sodium-based compound. They discovered that allowing the material to retain its natural water content significantly enhances how it functions inside a battery.

"The compound, called nanostructured sodium vanadate hydrate (#NVOH), delivered far stronger results when used in its hydrated form. It stored substantially more energy, charged at a faster rate, and maintained stability for more than 400 charge cycles.

"During testing, the hydrated version held nearly twice as much charge as standard sodium-ion cathode materials. This performance places it among the top cathodes reported so far for sodium-ion batteries.

"Dr. Daniel Commandeur, Research Fellow at the University of Surrey School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, and lead author of the paper, said: 'Our results were completely unexpected. Sodium vanadium oxide has been around for years, and people usually heat-treat it to remove the water because it's thought to cause problems. We decided to challenge that assumption, and the outcome was far better than we anticipated. The material showed much stronger performance and stability than expected and could even create exciting new possibilities for how these batteries are used in the future.'

    #Seawater Operation and Electrochemical #Desalination

"The team also explored how the material performed in salt water, an especially demanding environment for battery systems. Not only did it continue operating effectively, it also removed sodium ions from the saltwater solution. At the same time, a graphite electrode extracted chloride ions in a process known as electrochemical desalination.

"Dr. Commandeur added: 'Being able to use sodium vanadate hydrate in salt water is a really exciting discovery, as it shows sodium-ion batteries could do more than just store energy -- they could also help remove salt from water. In the long term, that means we might be able to design systems that use seawater as a completely safe, free and abundant electrolyte, while also producing #FreshWater as part of the process.' "

  6. Human #wellbeing on a #FinitePlanet towards 2100: new study shows humanity at a crossroads

A new paper by members of Earth4All’s scientific advisory team published today in Global Sustainability models two starkly different futures for humanity this century: one defined by escalating crises compounded by rising social tension, the other by a bold transformation towards wellbeing for all. The findings emphasise the importance of considering wellbeing and social cohesion when studying how planetary risks, inequality and social tensions interact.

    4 July 2025

Excerpt: "Boost social cohesion and wellbeing for successful climate action

"A key innovation of the study is the introduction of two novel indices: social tension and wellbeing. This enabled the researchers to model not just the complex interactions between economic and #environmental factors in the two scenarios, but also include social feedback loops capturing trust, public investment, and political capacity. The modelling results suggests that rising #inequality and environmental degradation fuel social tensions, which in turn reduce governments’ capacity to implement the long-term policies needed to address existential risks linked to climate change and other planetary boundaries.

" 'By integrating a social tension index and a wellbeing index, we have been able to highlight the importance of social dynamics in climate scenarios,' explained co-author #NathalieSpittler of #BOKUUniversity. 'Achieving climate goals is not just a question of technological and economic developments. If wellbeing declines and social tensions rise, this creates a negative feedback loop where the very conditions needed for transformational change become harder to achieve.'

"Conversely, the study suggests that actions to reduce inequality and increase #SocialCohesion and wellbeing are key if governments want to implement policy shifts on #climate and other global issues."

  7. #Earth4All #Argentina: Young people confront today’s challenges through debate

At a time when social and environmental crises are deepening, this initiative shows that young people are not just aware of the challenges—they are ready to lead the transformation. The real challenge is to listen to them and make room for their voices in the creation of truly transformative public policies.

    5 June 2025

"On 9 May, young people between the ages of 18 and 30 gathered simultaneously in #Córdoba, #BuenosAires, and #Tucumán to take part in the workshop 'Understanding the present to build the future we want,' part of the Earth4All Argentina National Engagement Strategy led by the #ClubOfRome – Argentinian Chapter.

"Organised in collaboration with #FundaciónAlimentaris and #JóvenesPorElClima, the workshop was part of the participatory process of the National Participation Program (NEP), an initiative aimed at gathering diagnostics, experiences, and proposals from local communities to influence public policy. Its goal is to collectively adapt the international Earth4All model to local realities. The model warns of the urgent need to move away from the current path, described as '#TooLittleTooLate,' and to move toward a '#GiantLeap' centred on #social and #EnvironmentalJustice. This transformative agenda is structured around five turnarounds: #EradicatingPoverty, #ReducingInequality, #EmpoweringWomen, transforming #FoodSystems, and driving the energy transition.

"The workshop brought together university students from the host cities, #grassroots and #EnvironmentalActivists, and civically engaged youth eager to influence #LocalPolicies and practices. Facilitated by Jóvenes por el Clima, the event was organized around two main dynamics: first, introducing the foundations and challenges of the Earth4All model; and second, mapping specific local issues and working in thematic groups aligned with the model’s five pillars, with the aim of #CoCreating concrete proposals grounded in the experiences and voices of #YoungPeople."

  8. #Solarpunk: Visions of a #Just, #NaturePositive world

What does a sustainable civilisation look like and how do we get there? A burgeoning movement of #artists and #activists is seeking answers.

    by Joe Coroneo-Seaman, January 21, 2022

Excerpt: "The concept of solarpunk originally emerged in the late 2000s, when a handful of artists on the social media platform Tumblr began sharing drawings of futuristic green cities. Over time, the aesthetic and ethos evolved into a more robust vision for the world, and in the process has been embraced by other art forms. There are now published collections of solarpunk literature, subgenres of music, movements within architecture and even tabletop role-playing games [#RPGs].

"At the core of this vision is the idea that humans can coexist in harmony with the rest of nature. A solarpunk world is one where vast swathes of land have been returned to #wilderness, rooftop gardens dot the skylines of high-tech cities and vertical farms provide food to their residents.

"Responsible use of #technology is also a prominent theme. #Solar, #wind and #wave power have entirely replaced #FossilFuels as sources of energy, while widespread #3DPrinting has made it much easier to produce things #locally, creating #resilient, #SelfSufficient #communities.

"Increasingly, artists and writers in the solarpunk movement also describe a world that is just and safe for #MarginalisedGroups – especially those facing the brunt of the #climate and #ecological crisis today. '#BIPOC [#Black, #Indigenous and #PeopleOfColour] and #QueerPeople are safe in solarpunk futures,' says Brianna Castagnozzi, co-editor-in-chief of Solarpunk Magazine.

"Although it may seem utopian and idealistic, solarpunk attempts to answer real questions being asked more and more often in light of the unfolding climate and ecological crisis. What can be saved? What does a truly #sustainable civilisation look like? How do we get there?

"It may be a big ask, but it’s now clear that the scale of the environmental crises facing humanity demands #TransformationalChanges to the way we live, as well as the way we think. Art has the power to shape our attitudes, so perhaps it’s time – as Nigerian poet #BenOkri said recently – for artists of all kinds to 'dedicate our lives to nothing short of re-dreaming society'."

  12. #Solarpunk: Off the grid and into the future- Inside the movement transforming #ClimateAction

    by Ebin Gheevarghese, 28/11/2025

"The dominant narrative of our time scrolls endlessly toward catastrophe, each headline a confirmation that we’re locked into systems designed to fail, but #solarpunk emerges as something different entirely: a movement blending art, literature, activism, and tangible real-world projects that dares to ask not 'what’s the worst that could happen?' but rather 'what’s the best we can actually build?'

"At its core, solarpunk envisions a world reorganized around #RenewableEnergy, genuine #cooperation, and #SustainableDesign that doesn’t sacrifice beauty or dignity in the process. The key themes include #AntiConsumerism, #CommunityAction, #localism, and what activists call #PrefigurativePolitics, which is essentially the idea that we should live the change we wish to see starting immediately, not someday when conditions magically align.

"The 'punk' in solarpunk carries real weight. The movement is fundamentally #countercultural, resisting both technological determinism and the business-as-usual [#BAU] thinking that’s driving us toward ecological #collapse. Solarpunk centers #decolonial values, #PostCapitalist ideals, and genuine #SelfSufficiency rather than the performative sustainability of #CorporateGreenwashing."

  13. Since my workplace is encouraging us to get to know AI tools, I've been utilizing them a wee bit. One thing I've found is that AI (at least Google AI) is willing and able to outline it's weaknesses. GOOD! Until we get a handle on this shit (especially corporate / capitalistic gain from it), I suppose it's good to get to know one's "enemy." And yes, if we could find a way to sustainably power AI and use it for the common good, it could help us. But given #CorporateColonialism and all, I wouldn't count on it.

  15. Listen to #JaneGoodall’s final — and urgent — message

Her last interviews are essential listening for everyone.

Jane Goodall: “We’re not intelligent, because intelligent creatures don’t destroy their only home.”

    by Benji Jones
    Oct 1, 2025

Excerpt: " 'It seems these days everybody is so involved with technology that we forget that we’re not only part of the natural world, we’re an animal like all the others,' Goodall, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute, a conservation group, said last week during the Forbes Sustainability Leaders Summit in NYC. 'We’re an animal like all the others. But we depend on it for clean air, water, food, clothing — everything.'

"And yet — 'We’re destroying the planet,' she said."

  16. And lastly, leaving you all with this essay by #DuskinWayne. The key takeaway I got from this is that wanting to achieve success isn't limited to capitalistic / selfish pursuits -- it can be utilized to create #ABetterWorld for everyone and the planet. (Note -- I don't agree with everything Duskin Wayne says, but I found it interesting in terms of thinking about 'what is human nature'?)

#StabilizedWorld: Social Welfare vs. Independent Pursuit of Success

    Published 2025

"Imagine a future where technology has solved many of the world’s biggest problems, creating a society that is more stable and equitable. MIT’s Fourth Scenario, the 'Stabilized World,' envisions a society where basic needs—like healthcare, education, and income—are guaranteed for everyone. With the rise of artificial intelligence and automation, labor has been redefined, allowing people to focus on what truly matters to them. In this world, the question becomes: Is happiness found in the security of a welfare state, or in the personal achievements that come from pursuing one’s own version of success? According to the scenario, this societal stability follows a period of collapse that is predicted to occur between 2030 and 2060, as we face #EnvironmentalCrises and economic #disparity.

"In this future, social welfare isn’t just a safety net but a foundational element of society. No longer do individuals need to fear falling into poverty or being excluded from opportunities. With a guaranteed basic income and universal access to essential services, people are free to explore their passions, whether that’s launching a startup, creating art, or dedicating time to personal development. This system allows for creativity and innovation to flourish, but it also raises a fundamental question: What drives happiness—personal success or the stability that comes from being part of a secure, #collective society?

"Although basic needs are met for everyone, the desire to achieve more, whether in wealth, status, or recognition, doesn’t disappear. In fact, many would argue that the pursuit of success is what gives life meaning, even in a world where the basics are assured. While the 'Stabilized World' provides a cushion, individuals are still encouraged to push boundaries, create, and innovate. But here, success is not solely defined by financial #wealth or #fame. It is the result of personal effort, #creativity, and contribution to society’s #GreaterGood. The tension between achieving for oneself and achieving for the collective good creates a nuanced approach to happiness — one that blends personal fulfillment with a sense of responsibility to the whole.

"This balancing act is particularly evident in the realms of education and entrepreneurship. In a world where the pressure to survive has been lifted, more people are free to pursue their dreams and develop new ideas. But does this individual drive to succeed come at the cost of social cohesion? In this future, innovation and entrepreneurship are celebrated, but they must be seen in the context of societal well-being. As people rise to success, they are encouraged to think about how their achievements can improve the lives of others. The concept of wealth shifts, moving away from mere accumulation to the idea of access — being able to live a life that goes beyond survival to one of exploration, joy, and meaningful contribution.

"Ultimately, the 'Stabilized World' scenario presents a society where personal ambition and collective stability coexist. As people work to achieve their own goals, they do so in a framework that ensures the well-being of all. This makes us ask: Is true happiness found in the wealth we accumulate or in the security we offer one another? The pursuit of success is no longer just about individual triumph; it’s about how we can innovate, create, and live in ways that benefit everyone. In this future, we learn that the intersection of personal ambition and social welfare isn’t a battle to be won but a balance to be struck, with both paths leading to a richer, more fulfilling life for all."

  18. Back to Eric Cline's updated preface to "1177 BC The Year Civilization Collapsed":

"When the end came, as it did after centuries of cultural and technological evolution, most of the civilized and international world of the Mediterranean regions came to a dramatic halt in a vast area stretching from what is now Italy to Afghanistan and from Turkey down to Egypt. Large empires and small kingdoms, which had taken centuries to evolve, collapsed rapidly, from the Myceneans and Minoans to the Hittites, Assyrians, Babylonians, Mitannians, Cyppriots, Canaanites, and even Egyptians.

"And with their end came a period of transition, frequently described by scholars as the world's first Dark Age. It was not until centuries later that a new cultural renaissance emerged in greece and the other affected areas, settig the stage of the evolution of society as we know it today." (Cline, 1177BC, page xvi).

However, "Some regions in Greece, such as Attica, Euboea, and central Crete, recovered economically from these events faster than others, but life for common Greeks would have remained relatively unchanged as it had for centuries. There was still farming, weaving, metalworking and pottery but at a lower level of output and for local use in local styles," (Wikipedia, The Greek Dark Ages).

In other words, #Degrowth! Also, the foundations of democracy (though limited to Greek male landowners). "Greece during this period was likely divided into independent regions organized by kinship groups and the oikoi or households, the origins of the later poleis. Most Greeks did not live in isolated farmsteads but in small settlements." So, smaller settlements and groups. Kinda what is predicted in some of the #LtG scenarios, but with the added *bonus* of pollution. (There was also #ClimateChange during the #LateBronzeAge, which was marked by droughts and crop failures).

Will we form smaller communities? Will we unite and use technology wisely before it's too late? Time will tell...

  19. So, it's not all bad news... I came across this from the "Recalibration" article referenced earlier... I plan on reading this soon!

    #EarthForAll: A #Survival Guide for #Humanity

"Published in 2022, this book details the findings of our initiative and details how we can steer humanity away from #ecological and #social catastrophe.

"The book is the result of collaboration between the 21st century Transformational Economics Commission and systems analysts and modelling teams. The lead authors are Sandrine Dixson-Declève, Owen Gaffney, Jayati Ghosh, Jørgen Randers, Johan Rockström and Per Espen Stoknes.

"The economic system keeps crashing. It's time to install a new operating system.

"Earth for All is both an antidote to despair and a road map to a better future. Using powerful state-of-the-art computer modeling to explore policies likely to deliver the most good for the majority of people, a leading group of scientists and economists from around the world present five extraordinary turnarounds to achieve prosperity for all within planetary limits in a single generation.

    Coverage includes:

    - Results of new global modeling that indicates falling wellbeing and rising social tensions
    - heighten risk of regional societal collapses

"Two alternative scenarios – #TooLittleTooLate vs #TheGiantLeap – and what they mean for our collective future

    - Five system-shifting steps that can upend poverty and inequality, lift up marginalized people, and transform our food and energy systems by 2050

    - A clear pathway to reboot our global economic system so it works for all people and the planet.

"Written in an open, accessible, and inspirational style using clear language and high impact visuals, Earth for All  is a profound vision for uncertain times and a map to a better future."

    Giant leap

"This scenario assumes societies embark on a new path to a #sustainable world by 2050. What if we fundamentally reconfigure our economies, energy and food systems so that they work for both people and the planet? Can we avoid the worst of #ClimateChange impacts and increase our societies’ resilience to shocks? Will we succeed in ending extreme poverty, guaranteeing everyone a healthy diet and access to quality education and healthcare?"
