1. The #applejuice (actually a medley -- there are some #pears, #plums, maybe a little bit of banana pepper in it) has not gone off and there is still time to can it for later use, will get more jars tomorrow. 2 gallons. We did not have that many #apples but the neighborhood provides by dropping fruit at my feet as I ramble along the sidewalks with my two sticks. The juicer died so I blended everything and let the pomace drain through a screen basket. It's nice stuff. I pre-wash the sticky utensils with the hose over a bin and the #pomace and the wash water go to garden beds and trees.
Along with many #horticultural, #orcharding and #farming terms, Mastodon's speller does not seem to know "pomace." But it knows more of them than most of the competition. It is forgiven.
2. The last #potatoes are lifted. We were to hit 94F today, so I hurried a little. There may be orphans. These were a batch that sprouted after a family member bought them -- Pontiacs. I was out of garden beds and planted them close along the paver pathway down the middle of the caged (deer proof) garden. Deer don't bother them but there being no space elsewhere, in they went rather late. Did not do badly at all.
3. While walking, I passed a young girl who had just fished a book out of a free pile beneath a catalpa tree and was reading it already as she went by. I stopped at the same pile and came away with a pretty mug whose handle fits my fingers just right, and does not burn my lips with hot tea, just I hoped.

today I am a potato. Just processed 30 pounds of potatoes, beautiful homegrown potatoes, into cubes, parboiled, rinsed and drained and bagged. In fridge getting cold enough to go into the freezer. Gonna be a potato kind of winter. PS I chose to early harvest so they are mostly "new" potatoes. NO PEELING!!!! Just cure, wash, cube and go.
#gardening #homegrown Y'all realize I can see 80 in the foreground, so I'm extra happy about how that aging thing is going, as well #vegetables #potatoes -

Happy National Potato Day! The beloved spud was first cultivated in South America as early as 8000 BC.

A nice little potato harvest. I may get a second crop, depending on the weather... I may keep the second batch on the porch if the weather gets too cold. I didn't have any luck with the purple potatoes, though. I'll try those again next year.

Just harvested tons of Laura potatoes. I love the red skin, and they have a delicious nutty taste 🥰 #gardening #potatoes

Okay, I've got a "social rules" question:
I lost to weeds one of my favorite potato varieties (Gunter Blue) that I carried with me from my old house in part because it's no longer for sale. I have a couple of potential avenues to see if I can retrieve it.
My friend's dad is the breeder, though I know from talking to her that he's not kept all his varieties. It feels like a bit of a shot in the dark, but at least I don't feel uncomfortable contacting my friend.
The person I sold my previous house to was a neighbor, not close enough that I have his contact info, but not like I'm a total stranger. I would likely need to contact him via my realtor, which feels a bit weird.
Which of these, if any, seem reasonable?
If not, are any of you familiar enough with potatoes that you can recommend something similar that does well in the PNW? Bonus points if it's got similarly big, beautiful blossoms.

Had no plans to grown #Potatoes this year, but the garden had other plans. Some tiny potatoes we missed from last year sprouted and gave us about 17 this year. Going to try and store them for next year 🤞.

In #German we call potatoes #Kartoffeln. But in the local dialect, #Pfälzisch, we call them Grumbeere, which literally translates to crooked berries.

Am... am flabbergasted....
b TWICE
in less than a year... two plotters.. asked me what are blackberries for!! good grief!! one, an immigrant, was amazed when I told him they're edible and delicious, he made a disgusted face.... the other a local with the plot right next to mine, also asked what are they for. I said they're edible and delicious and grown all around you; offered one fruit from a box I'd just filled in from the nearby bushes, she made a face and refused.Goodness gracious me. I rest my case. Am not telling them am having a handful of them in goat yogurt, for breakfast, lest they run away in fright.
Picked up some new potatoes over a couple of weeks; thanks to blackbirds digging for worms, they pull them up clean and tidy. nice.

When your potato plants start flowering, it’s a key sign: the tubers are forming underground! 💧 Boost watering now to support healthy growth and plump potatoes. Keep soil moist but not waterlogged for the best harvest. 🥔 #gardeningtips #potatoes
