La DJ queer a dû interrompre sa performance samedi 18 juillet à Grenoble face à une manifestation de militants LFI et propalestiniens.

Pour "Libé", elle revient sur cet incident et répond aux critiques.

Elle arrive à Libération mardi matin au bras de son avocate Audrey Msellati (https://www.instagram.com/amsllt/).

Fragile mais pas à terre, avec l’envie de parler, comme l’espoir, en s’exprimant, de se défendre et d’apaiser la situation.

Depuis les Jeux olympiques de Paris en 2024, Barbara Butch est la cible permanente d’attaques lesbophobes, grossophobes et antisémites en provenance de l’extrême droite.

Sa parole est devenue plus rare, pour des raisons de sécurité.

Depuis que la DJ a signé en mars une tribune de soutien à la proposition de loi Yadan visant à lutter "contre les nouvelles formes d’antisémitisme", elle est sous le coup d’un appel au boycott, notamment organisé par la section iséroise de LFI.

Dans un tract diffusé en amont de son set samedi soir au Cabaret frappé, à Grenoble, ces élus et militants de gauche la qualifiaient "d’artiste complice de génocide".

Elle a finalement été forcée de quitter la scène sous les huées.

L’incident a déclenché une polémique nationale et le parquet de Grenoble a annoncé ce mardi 21 juillet 2026 l’ouverture d’une enquête "pour délit d’entrave concerté aux libertés".

Dans Libération, plus de 300 artistes et universitaires dont Eva Illouz, Tal Bruttmann, Patrick Boucheron, Vincent Lemire, Alain Chabat, Géraldine Nakache et les frères Dardenne lui apporte leur soutien.

Barbara Butch a choisi de témoigner dans Libération, avec émotion, tout en refusant de se laisser enfermer dans la posture de victime.

Samedi 18 juillet 2026, le concert de Barbara Bouch au festival Cabaret frappé de Grenoble a été interrompu après l'intervention de militants proalestiniens dont des membres et élus de la France insoumise.

La DJ a finalement dû être exfiltrée.

Sa venue était contestée depuis le mois de mai : en cause sa signature d'une tribune soutenant la proposition de loi Yadan, un texte controversé visant à lutter contre les nouvelles formes d'antisémitisme **depuis retiré**.

Selon la mairie de Grenoble, des bouteilles en verre et d'autres projectiles ont été lancés en direction de la scène.

La ville et son adjoint à la culture ont porté plainte tandis que le parquet a ouvert une enquête pour **entrave concerté aux libertés**.

Figure des nuits LGBTQIA+ et l'un des visages de la cérémonie d'ouverture des Jeux Olympiques de Paris, Barbara Butch avait déjà été la cible d'un cyberharcèlement antisémite, lesbophobe et grossophobe.

Ce qui s'est passé c'est à dire que en fait, j'ai vu cette foule hyper en colère en colère contre moi.

Vraiment, c'était cruel.

Je pense que personne ne mérite de subir ça.

Les gens prenaient, il y avait des personnes qui prenaient des des cailloux qui ramassaient à même le sol ou du gravier qui me l'envoyaient sur les platines.

C'est plutôt courageux de sa part d'avoir pris position parce que je sais que depuis des mois, je suis #radioactive et que les gens ont peur de prendre la parole pour me défendre; parce que ils se sentent eux aussi en danger quelque part.

Et aujourd'hui ça montre que en fait là il y a une limite qui a été dépassée et donc je trouve ça très courageux maintenant que les gens apportent leur #soutien et le disent clairement, qu'ils l'écrivent et et j'en suis très reconnaissante.

Tupac Shakur’s “How Can We Be Free?” [A Guest Post by The Rev. Anthony Stevenson]

During the summer session I taught for BSK Theological Seminary this summer, I asked the students to submit weekly 300-word responses on the weekly assigned readings. For the last week, I assigned some poetry and lyrics by Tupac Shakur and a speech by Malcolm X (“The Ballot or the Bulelt”, 1964). The responses–across the board–were powerful; potentially the best week of responses of the seven (and, tbh, each week collected strong responses!). With that said, the following response about Tupac Shakur’s poem “How Can We Be Free” written by The Rev. Anthony Stevenson (pastor of Macedonia Baptist Church in Cynthiana, KY) demanded a wider audience. With his permission, I am honored to be featuring it here.

I love the impact of my theological education and my pastoral experiences, but what do I say to people who feel stretched thin by political division, economic pressure, and the relentless weight of social unrest? The question of what it means to be free is suspended in the air with new urgency. We live in a climate where people constantly speak of freedom, freedom of speech, freedom of choice, freedom to live without fear, yet many still feel locked up by temporal forces shaped by a lack of feeling free. Where is my liberty in a world shaped by racialized poverty, surveillance of the Black community, and generational trauma? Tupac argues that “freedom” becomes a slogan rather than an experience. Tupac’s poem, “How Can We Be Free,” challenges me to recognize how societal structures, economic, political, and cultural divisions, have and continue to produce a kind of invisible imprisonment.

As I speak from a pastoral, sanctified voice that speaks honestly to the world’s realities while immersing people in the deeper freedom that God offers, I stand boldly before God. My pastoral leadership cannot ignore the pressures shaping people’s lives; it must acknowledge the exhaustion, the frustration, and the longing for something fresh and reviving. Tupac’s question, “How can we be free?” is not just poetic; it is prophetic. Yet I must also send a high alert to the Black community that freedom is not merely a political condition or a social achievement; it is a spiritual reality rooted in truth, justice, and the liberating love of Jesus Christ. In a world where many people feel ensnared by circumstances that seem beyond their control, they find themselves overwhelmed by the rising costs of food, gas, and a decent standard of living. I confess that many feel caught in generational cycles of debt, struggling to break free. As racial inequities continue to limit our opportunities, there is little space left for rest or meaningful reflection. The everyday tension between the promise of freedom, liberty, and justice for all humankind feels fragile, incomplete, or unevenly distributed. In this fork-in-the-road moment, Tupac’s question remains unanswered: “How can we be free?”

This pastoral moment invites me to invite us to imagine freedom not as a distant belief but as a present possibility. If “[t]his so called ‘Home of the Brave, / why isn’t anybody backing us up!” (lines 9-10), “How can we be free?” to live authentically, to stand against injustice, to walk with dignity, and to have faith that God can break every chain. In this pastoral moment, allow me to back you up.  I am thrilled to declare that the gospel offers holistic liberation, freedom from sin, fear, injustice, and every burden that confines us, restoring God’s love within all humanity.

Asymmetry of UK State Impunity: Great Israeli Real Estate Event & the Constitutional Case Against Palestine Action Proscription!

The intersection of British public law, international law obligations, and the policing of political expression has reached a critical constitutional crisis. On Friday June 12, 2026, a Crown Court judge imposed unprecedented custodial sentences on Palestine Action activists for non-violent criminal damage at an Elbit Systems site, applying a controversial “terrorist connection” finding under section 69 of the Sentencing Act.[^1] Days later, on Monday June 15, 2026, the Court of Appeal fully reinstated the Home Secretary’s counter-terrorism proscription order against Palestine Action.[^2]

Concurrently, on June 14, 2026, the “Great Israeli Real Estate Event” took place at the Edgware United Synagogue in London—a commercial exhibition openly marketing residential real estate located within illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.[^3]

As the legal challenge to the proscription regime moves to the UK Supreme Court (#UKSC), the appellants must argue that proscription constitutes an extreme executive overreach that criminalizes political protest. To strengthen this counternarrative, the defense must challenge a systemic, intersectionally biased, and unlawful course of conduct by state organs—including the Metropolitan Police and the Home Office. By choosing to aggressively criminalize anti-war dissent while providing state protection to commercial events trading in unlawfully occupied land, the state has actively undermined its own legal frameworks.

1. The Asymmetric Execution of State Power: A Comparative Review

The state’s current approach to public order reveals a clear double standard. It treats international law violations with regulatory flexibility while deploying the full force of counter-terrorism laws to suppress political dissent.

A. The State-Sanctioned Facilitation of International War Crimes

Despite formal warnings from over 100 cross-party MPs, human rights groups, and legal organizations that the Great Israeli Real Estate Event violated international law,[^3] [^8] the Home Office and Metropolitan Police allowed the exhibition to proceed.[^3] Promotional materials distributed at the venue explicitly marketed properties in illegal settlements, including Ma’ale Adumim, Givat Zeev, Efrat, and Gush Etzion.[^6] [^9]

The state’s primary intervention was a minor administrative referral by Middle East Minister Hamish Falconer to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) to evaluate the event under domestic marketing guidelines.[^6] [^7] By treating the commercial distribution of occupied land as a mere consumer protection matter rather than a serious breach of international law, state departments have downplayed the legal gravity of settlement expansion.[^6]

B. The Criminalization of Free Expression and Assembly

While state organs protected the commercial operations inside the synagogue, the Metropolitan Police deployed extensive public order resources outside to restrict and manage anti-war demonstrators.[^3] Police arrested 14 protesters under the Public Order Act 1986, using strict conditions to limit the visibility and impact of the protest.[^3]

This enforcement strategy directly contrasts with the measures used against Palestine Action supporters just days prior, where holding a simple cardboard sign or voicing support for a banned group was treated as a major national security threat carrying a potential 14-year prison sentence.[^1] [^4] The contrast is clear: the state uses administrative and protective measures to shield commercial entities tied to illegal occupations, while deploying counter-terrorism laws to suppress domestic political expression.[^1] [^6]

2. The Constitutional Core for #UKSC: Intersectionality, Article 14, and International Law

To build a comprehensive case before the UK Supreme Court, the appellants must move beyond basic arguments regarding Articles 10 (Freedom of Expression) and 11 (Freedom of Assembly). The defense must construct an intersectional argument under Article 14 ECHR (Prohibition of Discrimination), demonstrating that the state’s actions constitute an unlawful and biased course of conduct.[^10]

I. Viewpoint Discrimination under Article 14 ECHR

Article 14 prohibits discrimination in the enjoyment of Convention rights based on political opinion, national origin, or race.[^10] The state’s current policing strategy shows clear viewpoint discrimination:

• It selectively applies counter-terrorism and public order powers to suppress and criminalize speech critical of Western foreign policy and the global arms trade.[^1] [^2]

• Conversely, it grants legal protection and administrative leniency to commercial operations that promote and profit from illegal settlement expansion.[^3] [^6]
  .

This disparate treatment fails the classic proportionality and justification tests established in Marckx v Belgium.[^11] The state cannot justify using severe counter-terrorism tools against non-violent placard-holders while simultaneously refusing to use ordinary criminal enforcement against organizations operating on UK soil that facilitate international law violations.[^1] [^6]

II. Domestic Violations of the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 (POCA)

By refusing to investigate or stop the sale of settlement real estate, the Metropolitan Police and the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) have failed to enforce domestic statutory mandates.[^6] Because Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories are illegal under international law—a position officially recognized by the UK government[^6]—any land acquired or developed there constitutes “criminal property” under section 340 of the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 (POCA).[^12]

Promoters, estate agents, and institutions facilitating these transactions within the UK are effectively handling the proceeds of unlawful conduct.[^6] The Metropolitan Police’s explicit decision not to launch a criminal investigation into the event via its War Crimes Team (SO15),[^6] while aggressively executing preventative arrests against anti-war demonstrators,[^5] represents a significant failure to apply domestic anti-money laundering and criminal property laws equitably.
