There are a gazillion Nextcloud apps. Recently enjoying podcasts again and with the Repod and Gpodder Sync apps with AntennaPod on my mobile it makes all extra enjoyable. I love it.

@[email protected] I'm not using any widgets since I use an unusual launcher and I am not familiar enough with native Android conventions to speak on it.
However the share menu/sheet in #AntennaPod is really good and as a user I consider the UX of the whole app to be top-notch.

Ich wollte schon seit gestern diese Frage fragen, die eigentlich keine Frage ist sondern eine Feststellung, aber auf Grund des Unterhaltungswertes als Frage formuliert ist: Warum ist eigentlich die AntennaPod App (https://antennapod.org, gibts bei fdriod;-) soviel besser als die ARD "Sound" App, die als ARD Audiothek App schon meh war und jetzt quasi unbenutzbar ist???

Plusieurs jours déjà que j'ai trouvé la fonction "bond en avant de 30s" direct sur le casque. Et j'éprouve encore la petite bouffée de plaisir à chaque fois que je skippe les pubs alakon de chez Acast :)

@dascritch je glisse subrepticement une reco pour #AntennaPod qui en plus permet de charger les épisodes sur ton tel et fini les problèmes de "plus de reseau" ou "j'ai éclaté mon forfait data"
Tu t'abonnes aux flux RSS, tu charges en un clic ce que tu veux écouter et c'est tout.

Any chance we could get multiple play queues in #AntennaPod?

I sometimes listen to talk podcasts, and sometimes to music ones, depending on what else I'm doing. Currently I need to completely rejig my play queue every time I switch between modes. It would be great to have a talk queue and a music queue, and be able to toggle between them.

Installing FOSS apps on your phone sometimes certainly feels like an eternal XKCD 927 purgatory.

- Apps by GrapheneOS for some GrapheneOS apps (and assorted ✨other✨ apps.
- Obtainium for installing apps directly from source/repos.
- Neo Store for installing apps who cannot be arsed to have .apk files in their repos (#AntennaPod), yet without dealing with the typical F-Droid shenanigans.
- Accrescent, because hell, why not! The more, the merrier!
- And, of course, Google Play Store for the corporate goblins.

The #GnomePodcasts app is lacking in a play queue for downloaded episodes. Is it possible to run #AntennaPod on #PostmarketOS, or is there another alternative? (#Kasts fails to open).

Migrating from Google Podcasts to AntennaPod on Android

Like all fun Google applications, Google Podcasts is being axed and its function in this case is being rolled-over to YouTube Music, which I fear will mean less usability in (e.g.) cars, and even more adverts than those already spliced into the content.

I want to get away from the extra crap.

Podcast players & RSS readers are related, being (like standalone blogs) legacies of the “Web 2.0” / early 2000s era of people “doing tech for themselves”, before platforms and advertising money became both big and essential for “influencers”; this architectural quirk means that although you can choose to buy an app and pay for a cloud storage service to store all your podcast subscriptions, you can also hunt around for an app to install on your phone to do it all for you locally — so long as you don’t lose your phone, which is a risk I’m willing to accept.

After some research I chose AntennaPod because it’s free, open-source, highly-regarded, and straightforwardly supports import of OPML files, which are the standard format of data for transferring podcast subscriptions from one podcast player to another.

The problem then became: how to get OPML out of Google Podcasts

The Solution

In the end it was very very simple, but also very slow, which may be a standard problem or may be a consequence of having enabled Google Advanced Protection; but:

1. Navigate to Google Takeout, and start a takeout process. You might as well start this right now because it may take ages.
2. Deselect ALL of the products
3. Enable Google Podcasts, and (important) click the OPML Format button
4. Go to the Next Step and follow the rest of the process; I chose ZIP output
5. Wait several days to receive a notification of data export; clearly the Takeout process is geared towards exporting gigabytes of email and this is a massive hurdle for just tiny bits of data like OPML files, but it’s gotta be done. I panicked because it arrived as a security alert, until I remembered it and confirmed that I wanted the export to take place.
6. Receive the email, download the ZIP file onto a laptop, unzip the ZIP file, find the OPML file, oh my god Google if everyone has to do this it will be a nightmare
7. At this point the official AntennaPod page suggests emailing the OPML file to yourself as an attachment and then saving it locally, but I suspect that you could use Google Drive to get it back onto your phone. I used Dropbox, or you could manually transfer it if you’re into that sort of thing.
8. Open AntennaPod; go to Import/Export, go to OPML Import. Import it.
9. Done

Really, the pain here is all entirely and utterly due to Google. There ought to be an OPML Export button on the website. There ought to be an OPML export feature in the app – and onesuch was built, but apparently was only launched in the USA. I am guessing that the people working on that must have been laid-off, since updates were promised in December last year?

Anyway: now I have a nice Podcast app, and all the data is under my control.

Let’s see what I can find that’s worth listening to.

#GooglePodcasts is being phased out. #AntennaPod is the 'droid app you're looking for.

#gPodder is the best podcast app for Linux, and it currently requires two decades worth of usability updates. I finally gave up and switched to Gnome Podcasts because their gui wasn't horrible, and they have #opml import/export. Sometimes I wish that #AntennaPod had a desktop version for Linux. Or that the gPodder #gnomepodcasts and AntennaPod devs would all combine forces.
