    #Canada’s #NationalParks Are #Colonial #CrimeScenes.

Many see wilderness as a right of citizenship. But the concept of Canada as untouched #nature is unrecognizable to #Indigenous people

In 2017, it felt like the whole country was swept up in the rah-rah celebrations around Canada 150. It was a collective anniversary, a chance to celebrate our history. Well, some of it, anyway. Tied to the many calls to explore the country and take stock of its many wonders, #ParksCanada released its Discovery Pass, which granted free entry to all national parks that year. These natural spaces “represent the very best that Canada has to offer,” it announced in a press release. “They are the essence of our country because they tell stories of who we are, including the history, cultures and contributions of Indigenous peoples.” But, as Robert Jago explored in his timely essay, Canada’s parks program was built on the displacement of Indigenous peoples and the capture of their territories—a form of “green colonialism.” Parks are wonderful spaces, but they have also acted as #political cover for the control of land, a tactic we still see used today.—Daniel Viola, senior editor, November 2023 issue.

  2. Officials with the federal government told organizations and community leaders responsible for searches for #MissingChildren and #UnmarkedBurials at #ResidentialSchool sites Thursday their funding is being capped at $500,000 per year.

That cap is substantially less than previous operating budgets and much less than what organizations estimate is required to continue the work.

Special Interlocutor Kimberly Murray said this is the third time the funding structure for searches has changed and that her interim report released last summer pointed at a lack of sufficient long-term funding. She said this recommendation will be echoed in her final report and that it was "absolutely ridiculous" for the government to say they were waiting on these recommendations when they are clearly not applying them.

"But it's also part of, like, settler amnesty, right, and a culture of #impunity … we stop funding communities to do the work, then less truths are going to come out, and, you know, there'll be less calls for #justice and #accountability, and they won't have to comply with their international legal obligations," she said.

  3. I'm #AntiPolice #AntiColonialGovernment #AntiColonialism #AntiAbleist #AntiRacism & I don't negotiate on those stances. If you're ok, negotiating on above stated stances - I'd question your life experiences. I'd question your efforts, if any, towards #decolonization too. I seriously believe anyone who believes anything #BCGovernment says these days - y'all drugged or drunk or uncaring.
