Can Solarpunk Save the World?
The choice, then, is clear: solarpunk, or barbarism.
by Stacey Balkan, November 15, 2022
Excerpt: "Offering an imperfect but clear-eyed hope, rather than so many apocalyptic nightmares, is a key goal of solarpunk fiction. While many critics argue that radical change will only come about following the total collapse of Earth systems—in other words, the apocalypse imagined by popular climate fiction and much recent zombie fare—it has become increasingly evident that such alarmism possesses no political utility.
"Furthermore, in a discussion about climate and energy justice, we must acknowledge that, for many #Indigenous communities, the 'apocalypse' happened long ago: during the long 16th-century, when an expanding plantation system expedited the removal and enslavement of millions of #BIPOC persons in order to accommodate the #hyperconsumption of imperial centers like London.
"Apocalypse, as a geohistorical event or literary trope, is thus not central to solarpunk. That is, solarpunk doesn’t require an environmental apocalypse, because most solarpunk practitioners understand the material legacies of #SettlerColonialism as on ongoing apocalypse.
"Consequently, solarpunk worlds are not necessarily postapocalyptic (nor set in the future), but they are #postextractivist. Responding to the ethos of #extractive #capitalism — whereby the colonized exist as 'fuel … for the sake of someone else’s good life' — solarpunk imaginaries demand a thorough dismantling of fossil-fueled modernity and the material infrastructures (and attendant cultural expressions) that occasioned our comprehensive dependence on prehistoric carbon. Quite logically then, solarpunk also rejects the techno-utopian project of saving industrial modernity via increasingly hubristic geoengineering schemes."

So, my reason for participating / hosting #Hashtag events like #SolarPunkSunday and #FirstFridayArtWalk is to highlight other folks. Sure, I post some stuff as well. But the way I see it, like #WhatMagazineOnline, it's a communal experience and a way of #BuildingCommunity . Because... We sure as hell need to #UniteAgainstTheRight (and #Colonialism and #Capitalism), right now! We are running out of time, folks.

Non-Fiction Trilogy of sorts - "#TheLimitsToGrowth; #PowerLimitsAndProspectsForHumanSurvival; and #EarthForAllASurvivalGuideForHumanity.
So, my copy of "The Limits To Growth" is a first edition from 1972, which I bought in a used book store in 1980. Whoever owned it before ("Denison") highlighted a bunch of stuff (the old school highlighters that don't fade), and put zig-zag lines around this paragraph: "In any finite system there must be constraints that can act to stop exponential growth. These constraints are negative feedback loops. The negative loops become stronger and stronger as growth approches the ultimate limit, or carrying capacity, of the system's environment. Finally, the negative loops balance or dominate the positive ones, and growth comes to an end. In the world system the negative feedback loops involve such processes as pollution of the environment, depletion of nonrenewable resources, and famine."
Fast forward to 2021, where one of the Limits To Growth authors, #DennisMeadows, describes #RichardHeinberg's "Power - Limits And Prospects for Human Survival" as "a powerful new way of understanding the historic rise and probable fall of our species. It is an impressive, sweeping, and thought-provoking narrative." Heinberg talks about how we got to where we are today (lots of history), but also offers solutions (like #Agroecology and #Degrowth).
Finally, "#EarthForAll - A Survival Guide For Humanity" -- which was a report to the #ClubOfRome, and a 50 year follow-up to Limits To Growth. This book is where I learned about the #GiantLeapScenario that we so need to survive as a species on a viable planet.
Limits To Growth influenced my thinking at a young age. "Power" explains how we went wrong, and "Earth For All" gives me hope for the future.

Clara Mattei: capitalism is not natural - it’s enforced
"Clara Mattei is an author and professor of economics whose work explores how economic ideas become tools of power, shaping policy while masking the political decisions beneath.
Her new book, Escape from Capitalism, argues that many of the problems that we see as inevitable - poverty, unemployment, inflation - are built into the system and shored up by models and theories designed to convince us that there is no alternative.
On this episode of Ways to Change the World, Krishnan Guru-Murthy speaks to Mattei about whether there is an alternative to capitalism."

Next up, @CrimethInc ! One of my go-to websites!
"What Is #Crimethink?
Crimethink is everything that evades control: the daydream in the classroom, the renegade breaking ranks, the spray-painted walls that continue to speak even under martial law. It is the persistent sense that things could be otherwise, that there is nothing natural or inevitable about the prevailing social order. In a world optimized for administration, everything that cannot be classified or displayed on a screen is crimethink. It is the spirit of rebellion without which freedom is literally unthinkable.
What Is CrimethInc.?CrimethInc. is a #RebelAlliance — a secret society pledged to the propagation of crimethink. It is a think tank producing ideas and action, a sphinx posing questions fatal to the superstitions of our age.
CrimethInc. is a banner for anonymous collective action. It is not a membership organization, but a mouthpiece for longings that extend throughout the population at large. Anyone can be CrimethInc. — it could be your next-door neighbor or the person sitting beside you on the bus. You and your friends already constitute an affinity group, the organizational model best suited to guerrilla tactics, ready to go into action against all the forces that threaten your freedom.
CrimethInc. is an international network of aspiring #revolutionaries extending from #Kansas to #KualaLumpur. For over twenty years, we have published news, analysis, books, journals, posters, videos, podcasts, and a wide range of other resources — all copyright free, produced and distributed by volunteer labor, without reliance on external funding or market trends. We also coordinate speaking tours, debates, and various other public events. Though we rarely seek public recognition for our efforts, everything we do is informed by our participation in social movements.
CrimethInc. is a desperate venture. As this society lurches ever closer to annihilation, we are staking everything on the possibility that we could kick open the escape hatch to another future. Rather than competing for social capital or selling ourselves to the highest bidder, we have thrown ourselves completely into the struggle for a better world. We invite you to do the same."

"I’ve seen a lot of people lashing out at people horizontally, and my gut sense is that sometimes it happens because the folks who are lashing out are definitely super traumatized, in crisis, feel and are really powerless in a lot of ways,” disability justice organizer Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha in conversation with host Kelly Hayes and Elliott Fukui, who develops community safety strategies for emotional wellness and safety, about why people are struggling right now, what’s keeping people alive and engaged, and what we need to create together to survive these times.

This was an interesting listen: Democratic Living in Times of Fascism
A conversation with H. L. T. Quan and Dylan Rodríguez about the latest book of Quan:
Become Ungovernable, An Abolition Feminist Ethic for Democratic LivingI especially liked how they both point out what a real democracy should and could be.
https://www.plutobooks.com/9780745349114/become-ungovernable/
"We explore concepts such as state addiction, anti-democracy, ungovernability and democratic living. We also touch on the work of Cedric Robinson, and what we can learn from Black abolition feminist praxis."

Returning from our trip has been a harsh awakening. The contrast between my personal journey and the world's struggles has been a tough pill to swallow. It's left me feeling creatively blocked and uncertain about sharing our trip photos. They feel insignificant in the face of current events. Yet, I believe it's essential to hold onto hope. I'll continue to post, not in spite of current events, but because of them.
A better world is possible.

Ummmm... I believe in world that's #PostCapitalism. But yeah. #ClimateChange is a HUGE wake up call for us all!
#ClimateCrisis on track to destroy capitalism, warns top insurer
Action urgently needed to save the conditions under which markets – and civilisation itself – can operate, says senior Allianz figure
Damian Carrington Environment editor
Thu 3 Apr 2025"The climate crisis is on track to destroy capitalism, a top insurer has warned, with the vast cost of extreme weather impacts leaving the financial sector unable to operate.
"The world is fast approaching temperature levels where insurers will no longer be able to offer cover for many climate risks, said Günther Thallinger, on the board of Allianz SE, one of the world’s biggest insurance companies. He said that without insurance, which is already being pulled in some places, many other financial services become unviable, from mortgages to investments.
"Global carbon emissions are still rising and current policies will result in a rise in global temperature between 2.2C and 3.4C above pre-industrial levels. The damage at 3C will be so great that governments will be unable to provide financial bailouts and it will be impossible to adapt to many climate impacts, said Thallinger, who is also the chair of the German company’s investment board and was previously CEO of Allianz Investment Management.
"The core business of the insurance industry is risk management and it has long taken the dangers of global heating very seriously. In recent reports, Aviva said extreme weather damages for the decade to 2023 hit $2tn, while GallagherRE said the figure was $400bn in 2024. Zurich said it was “essential” to hit net zero by 2050.
"Thallinger said: 'The good news is we already have the technologies to switch from fossil combustion to zero-emission energy. The only thing missing is speed and scale. This is about saving the conditions under which markets, finance, and civilisation itself can continue to operate.' "

I have a hard time
explaining my feeling
that I am living
like I am already dead
because that's how
I'd once explain
the failures of Christianity
so many live
only thinking of their afterlife
to the detriment
of the world around them
but I am taking that back
I am living for the future
of the earth, the trees, the animals
the humans that will inherit
our legacy
I live my life
caring for the fertile soil
that liberated gardens
will be grown in
by people beyond my lifetime
I am living
like I have already died
but I have never felt more alive -

I can understand the emotion behind using words like "us as a species," "humanity," and "human nature." But with these words people also make a false equivalence of the perpetrators and the victims. These words erase the 90% of us struggling to survive under this hostile, death-making system, suffering premature deaths for the profits of a very small group of people.
Name the perpetrators, because it's them and the destructive systems that benefits them we need to fight.
