So, this is a real good use for mansions and estates everywhere -- #CommunityHousing !
We all share a 15-acre Georgian mansion for the price of a two-bed house
Natalie Grice, 29 August 2026
"Dreams of living in a Georgian manor house with 15 acres of grounds would usually be associated with a big lottery win.
"But for the residents of Dol-llys Hall on the outskirts of Llanidloes, Powys, no windfall was necessary.
"The Grade II listed building is home to a collection of ordinary people who have chosen to live cooperatively - sharing responsibility for maintaining the home and its grounds and trying to live as sustainably as possible.
" 'You have got a ready-made village mentality where people just help each other out,' says Louise Robinson, one of the longest serving of 10 residents at the hall.
" 'There's six other flats going 'what can we do?' And that means a lot."
Louise Nicholson is a middle-aged white woman with shoulder length dark grey hair. She wears grey framed photo-reactive glasses, a light blue v-neck t-shirt with a lily pad white emblem on the front. She is smiling at the camera. Behind her is the main entrance to Dol-llys Hall. There are two dark wooden doors with arched fanlights above which open from the middle of a curved porch-type entrance. The building is painted yellowy-cream. There are arched windows to the left of the door visible. A mop handle and a piece of wooden furniture can be seen to the right of the doors."The hall, which has served as a school and a care home as well as a former stately home over the years, now holds seven flats within its walls and a number of #communal living areas and #SharedFacilities like washing machines and heating.
"Louise first came across Dol-llys after she was made redundant from her insurance job in London. She found herself spending more and more time away from the city, enjoying walking in the rural countryside, and realised she wanted to live there permanently.
" 'I'm a single person, so moving to a country village on your own is not that easy,' she says.
" 'Somebody mentioned [intentional] communities and said 'have you heard about them?''
"After investigating quite a few, she knew she did not want to live somewhere where she only had a bedroom and everything else was shared. And at Dol-llys, where she moved in early 2020, she found the perfect combination of community and privacy.
" 'We term ourselves as #cohousing, because we all have our separate flats,' she says, and that the set-up is not a commune.
" 'We share the grounds, we share the common rooms, we share responsibilities and decision-making, but we all have our front doors, which I think is important to everybody who chooses to live here.' "

Alrighty then. Wrapping up #SolarPunkSunday... Next week I'll be posting about #PestControl, #PoisonIvy, #Herbs, #FoodPreservation, and how to turn a #BBQ Grill into a #Smoker, and whatever other topics come up. I may focus on #SolarPunk-related resources in the #UK or #Canada -- just to be cheeky! 😉 Boosting and re-posting some SPS posts from yesterday. Thanks to everyone who used the hashtag and chimed in! As usual, I learned a LOT!

Interesting theory... It doesn't call for #Degrowth, but it does call for not buying as much stuff and #TaxingTheRich!
‘An equal and habitable world is possible’: academics set out sweeping vision for planetary survival
Global report provides an alternative to climate breakdown, political extremism and economic tensions
Jonathan Watts
Thu 4 Jun 2026Excerpt: "[The plan] offers a set of bold policy proposals, including hefty #WealthTaxes on #billionaires, sharp reductions in working hours, a change in diets and a shift of investment from materially intense sectors like industry and #mining to education and health.
[...]
"This 'plan for equality and prosperity within planetary boundaries' is the product of 45 authors based on databases compiled by more than 200 researchers from the world.
"At its core is the concept of sufficiency – the idea that people can enjoy a prosperous, healthy life without constantly striving to consume or accumulate more #MaterialPossessions that degrade the #NaturalWorld on which all life depends.
"To achieve this, the authors envisage three steps: more than halving average working time from 2,100 hours a year to 1,000 hours, roughly equivalent to a two-and-a-half-day working week; encouraging people to #EatLessRedMeat, which is the main driver of deforestation and ecological destruction; and refocusing the economy toward #LowConsumption activities by more than doubling #Education spending to €8,400 euros (£7,250) a person and #healthcare spending to 14,400 euros.
"Piketty said: 'One extra euro of GDP in education and health has three to four times less material footprint and energy consumption than one extra euro of GDP in the manufacturing sector. So that’s why the sectoral shifts are hugely important.' "

#Earth4All #Argentina: Young people confront today’s challenges through debate
At a time when social and environmental crises are deepening, this initiative shows that young people are not just aware of the challenges—they are ready to lead the transformation. The real challenge is to listen to them and make room for their voices in the creation of truly transformative public policies.
5 June 2025
"On 9 May, young people between the ages of 18 and 30 gathered simultaneously in #Córdoba, #BuenosAires, and #Tucumán to take part in the workshop 'Understanding the present to build the future we want,' part of the Earth4All Argentina National Engagement Strategy led by the #ClubOfRome – Argentinian Chapter.
"Organised in collaboration with #FundaciónAlimentaris and #JóvenesPorElClima, the workshop was part of the participatory process of the National Participation Program (NEP), an initiative aimed at gathering diagnostics, experiences, and proposals from local communities to influence public policy. Its goal is to collectively adapt the international Earth4All model to local realities. The model warns of the urgent need to move away from the current path, described as '#TooLittleTooLate,' and to move toward a '#GiantLeap' centred on #social and #EnvironmentalJustice. This transformative agenda is structured around five turnarounds: #EradicatingPoverty, #ReducingInequality, #EmpoweringWomen, transforming #FoodSystems, and driving the energy transition.
"The workshop brought together university students from the host cities, #grassroots and #EnvironmentalActivists, and civically engaged youth eager to influence #LocalPolicies and practices. Facilitated by Jóvenes por el Clima, the event was organized around two main dynamics: first, introducing the foundations and challenges of the Earth4All model; and second, mapping specific local issues and working in thematic groups aligned with the model’s five pillars, with the aim of #CoCreating concrete proposals grounded in the experiences and voices of #YoungPeople."
