Can Solarpunk Save the World?
The choice, then, is clear: solarpunk, or barbarism.
by Stacey Balkan, November 15, 2022
Excerpt: "Offering an imperfect but clear-eyed hope, rather than so many apocalyptic nightmares, is a key goal of solarpunk fiction. While many critics argue that radical change will only come about following the total collapse of Earth systems—in other words, the apocalypse imagined by popular climate fiction and much recent zombie fare—it has become increasingly evident that such alarmism possesses no political utility.
"Furthermore, in a discussion about climate and energy justice, we must acknowledge that, for many #Indigenous communities, the 'apocalypse' happened long ago: during the long 16th-century, when an expanding plantation system expedited the removal and enslavement of millions of #BIPOC persons in order to accommodate the #hyperconsumption of imperial centers like London.
"Apocalypse, as a geohistorical event or literary trope, is thus not central to solarpunk. That is, solarpunk doesn’t require an environmental apocalypse, because most solarpunk practitioners understand the material legacies of #SettlerColonialism as on ongoing apocalypse.
"Consequently, solarpunk worlds are not necessarily postapocalyptic (nor set in the future), but they are #postextractivist. Responding to the ethos of #extractive #capitalism — whereby the colonized exist as 'fuel … for the sake of someone else’s good life' — solarpunk imaginaries demand a thorough dismantling of fossil-fueled modernity and the material infrastructures (and attendant cultural expressions) that occasioned our comprehensive dependence on prehistoric carbon. Quite logically then, solarpunk also rejects the techno-utopian project of saving industrial modernity via increasingly hubristic geoengineering schemes."

So, this is a real good use for mansions and estates everywhere -- #CommunityHousing !
We all share a 15-acre Georgian mansion for the price of a two-bed house
Natalie Grice, 29 August 2026
"Dreams of living in a Georgian manor house with 15 acres of grounds would usually be associated with a big lottery win.
"But for the residents of Dol-llys Hall on the outskirts of Llanidloes, Powys, no windfall was necessary.
"The Grade II listed building is home to a collection of ordinary people who have chosen to live cooperatively - sharing responsibility for maintaining the home and its grounds and trying to live as sustainably as possible.
" 'You have got a ready-made village mentality where people just help each other out,' says Louise Robinson, one of the longest serving of 10 residents at the hall.
" 'There's six other flats going 'what can we do?' And that means a lot."
Louise Nicholson is a middle-aged white woman with shoulder length dark grey hair. She wears grey framed photo-reactive glasses, a light blue v-neck t-shirt with a lily pad white emblem on the front. She is smiling at the camera. Behind her is the main entrance to Dol-llys Hall. There are two dark wooden doors with arched fanlights above which open from the middle of a curved porch-type entrance. The building is painted yellowy-cream. There are arched windows to the left of the door visible. A mop handle and a piece of wooden furniture can be seen to the right of the doors."The hall, which has served as a school and a care home as well as a former stately home over the years, now holds seven flats within its walls and a number of #communal living areas and #SharedFacilities like washing machines and heating.
"Louise first came across Dol-llys after she was made redundant from her insurance job in London. She found herself spending more and more time away from the city, enjoying walking in the rural countryside, and realised she wanted to live there permanently.
" 'I'm a single person, so moving to a country village on your own is not that easy,' she says.
" 'Somebody mentioned [intentional] communities and said 'have you heard about them?''
"After investigating quite a few, she knew she did not want to live somewhere where she only had a bedroom and everything else was shared. And at Dol-llys, where she moved in early 2020, she found the perfect combination of community and privacy.
" 'We term ourselves as #cohousing, because we all have our separate flats,' she says, and that the set-up is not a commune.
" 'We share the grounds, we share the common rooms, we share responsibilities and decision-making, but we all have our front doors, which I think is important to everybody who chooses to live here.' "

‘Make people dream’: how to build an economy for the #CommonGood
Economist Prof Mariana Mazzucato says governments must ‘get back their mojo’ and believe they can change the world
Fiona Harvey Environment editor
Fri 26 Jun 2026"But while Mazzucato is horrified at what Starmer’s government has become, her aim is global. In her new book, The Common Good Economy: A New Compass, she wants nothing less than a remaking of economic theory and government practice, around a new set of purposes that would tackle the global scourge of inequality and the existential threat of the climate and nature crises. Current economic models have failed us. She argues that the world needs to rediscover the idea of the common good, our shared fate that depends on equitably nurturing the bounty of our only planet."

#Indigenous Leadership for Transformative #ClimateAction
By Kaniela Ing & #NDNCollective
Excerpt: "Restoring Regeneration
"Climate justice will require a significant structural shift from a #ProfitBased global #extractive economy to #NeedsBased, #localized, #RegenerativeEconomies. Anthropologists believe that, for centuries, people in many Indigenous societies worked roughly 15 hours a week to provide for their personal and communal needs. Our ancestors mastered advanced ecological management practices—like #regenerativeAgriculture , #aquaculture, #ControlledBurning, and #CoralReef replenishment — that Western empiricism is finally catching up to after decades of colonial governments banning such practices. These highly efficient Indigenous systems afforded our ancestors ample time to engage in fellowship with friends, practice arts and #crafts, learn new skills, or just relax and enjoy their lives.
"Today, we produce enough goods and services to exceed the needs of all among us, but poverty and income equality remain stark. Extractive systems endlessly require another valley, another river, another island, another continent—until there is nowhere left to occupy, conquer, pollute, and destroy. No clearer purveyor of this #ColonialMindset exists than the man who milked the most out of the #ExtractiveEconomy. Jeff Bezos, currently the richest man in the world, recently spent $5.5 billion dollars on a joyride to space using the money he’s hoarded by exploiting and abusing hundreds of thousands of workers selling mostly useless goods—made cheap by the monopoly power of Amazon and Amazon-affiliated companies—to the masses. Like a movie villain, his first comment upon witnessing the majesty of our cosmos was that we should immediately begin polluting it by exporting our trash beyond Earth’s orbit.
"We should take heart in the fact that people built our oppressive institutions, because it means that people can dismantle them and build something new. People hold the knowledge and technologies to transform society. All we need is moral fortitude and revolutionary courage. Today’s extractive systems were created and are upheld by the colonial myths of scarcity, individualism, and the sanctity of free markets. Tomorrow’s regenerative systems must be rooted in the Indigenous realities of #abundance, community codependency, and deep #reciprocal relationships between the planet and its people."

So, this is a timely topic! From the latest issue of #InTheseTimes! The connection between Amazon Deforestation and CEO land grabs in the Western United States -- bought with blood money!
Fortress Yellowstone
The #UltraRich are fortifying themselves inside one of America’s last intact #ecosystems—with money plundered from ecological #SacrificeZones around the world
by Joseph Bullington, April 6, 2026
Excerpt: "Some of these ultra-rich ranch owners celebrate the natural beauty of their land and are ardent conservationists when it comes to the Yellowstone ecosystem. In digging into their business dealings, however, I found that most of these landowners accumulated their wealth through industries that help drive the destruction of nature elsewhere. Their ranks include private equity investors, oil and gas billionaires and real estate developers. "[...]
"Now, instead of forests full of fruits and animals and mandioca clearings, industrial soy plantations press in on #Açaizal like a closing fist. There is no escape from the onslaught of #monoculture. Manoel shows me where rows of broken cornstalks run right up against the edge of the community’s soccer field, which the soy farmers also want to plow. The soybeans and corn, like those in the United States, are genetically engineered to withstand the #herbicides and #pesticides the farmers dump on them to beat back weeds and pests, but the chemicals drift, says Manoel, making it impossible to grow fruits and vegetables and #mandioca nearby. The streams run low and full of poison."

Non-Fiction Trilogy of sorts - "#TheLimitsToGrowth; #PowerLimitsAndProspectsForHumanSurvival; and #EarthForAllASurvivalGuideForHumanity.
So, my copy of "The Limits To Growth" is a first edition from 1972, which I bought in a used book store in 1980. Whoever owned it before ("Denison") highlighted a bunch of stuff (the old school highlighters that don't fade), and put zig-zag lines around this paragraph: "In any finite system there must be constraints that can act to stop exponential growth. These constraints are negative feedback loops. The negative loops become stronger and stronger as growth approches the ultimate limit, or carrying capacity, of the system's environment. Finally, the negative loops balance or dominate the positive ones, and growth comes to an end. In the world system the negative feedback loops involve such processes as pollution of the environment, depletion of nonrenewable resources, and famine."
Fast forward to 2021, where one of the Limits To Growth authors, #DennisMeadows, describes #RichardHeinberg's "Power - Limits And Prospects for Human Survival" as "a powerful new way of understanding the historic rise and probable fall of our species. It is an impressive, sweeping, and thought-provoking narrative." Heinberg talks about how we got to where we are today (lots of history), but also offers solutions (like #Agroecology and #Degrowth).
Finally, "#EarthForAll - A Survival Guide For Humanity" -- which was a report to the #ClubOfRome, and a 50 year follow-up to Limits To Growth. This book is where I learned about the #GiantLeapScenario that we so need to survive as a species on a viable planet.
Limits To Growth influenced my thinking at a young age. "Power" explains how we went wrong, and "Earth For All" gives me hope for the future.

#Earth4All #Argentina: Young people confront today’s challenges through debate
At a time when social and environmental crises are deepening, this initiative shows that young people are not just aware of the challenges—they are ready to lead the transformation. The real challenge is to listen to them and make room for their voices in the creation of truly transformative public policies.
5 June 2025
"On 9 May, young people between the ages of 18 and 30 gathered simultaneously in #Córdoba, #BuenosAires, and #Tucumán to take part in the workshop 'Understanding the present to build the future we want,' part of the Earth4All Argentina National Engagement Strategy led by the #ClubOfRome – Argentinian Chapter.
"Organised in collaboration with #FundaciónAlimentaris and #JóvenesPorElClima, the workshop was part of the participatory process of the National Participation Program (NEP), an initiative aimed at gathering diagnostics, experiences, and proposals from local communities to influence public policy. Its goal is to collectively adapt the international Earth4All model to local realities. The model warns of the urgent need to move away from the current path, described as '#TooLittleTooLate,' and to move toward a '#GiantLeap' centred on #social and #EnvironmentalJustice. This transformative agenda is structured around five turnarounds: #EradicatingPoverty, #ReducingInequality, #EmpoweringWomen, transforming #FoodSystems, and driving the energy transition.
"The workshop brought together university students from the host cities, #grassroots and #EnvironmentalActivists, and civically engaged youth eager to influence #LocalPolicies and practices. Facilitated by Jóvenes por el Clima, the event was organized around two main dynamics: first, introducing the foundations and challenges of the Earth4All model; and second, mapping specific local issues and working in thematic groups aligned with the model’s five pillars, with the aim of #CoCreating concrete proposals grounded in the experiences and voices of #YoungPeople."
