We all share a 15-acre Georgian mansion for the price of a two-bed house

    Natalie Grice, 29 August 2026

"Dreams of living in a Georgian manor house with 15 acres of grounds would usually be associated with a big lottery win.

"But for the residents of Dol-llys Hall on the outskirts of Llanidloes, Powys, no windfall was necessary.

"The Grade II listed building is home to a collection of ordinary people who have chosen to live cooperatively - sharing responsibility for maintaining the home and its grounds and trying to live as sustainably as possible.

" 'You have got a ready-made village mentality where people just help each other out,' says Louise Robinson, one of the longest serving of 10 residents at the hall.

" 'There's six other flats going 'what can we do?' And that means a lot."
Louise Nicholson is a middle-aged white woman with shoulder length dark grey hair. She wears grey framed photo-reactive glasses, a light blue v-neck t-shirt with a lily pad white emblem on the front. She is smiling at the camera. Behind her is the main entrance to Dol-llys Hall. There are two dark wooden doors with arched fanlights above which open from the middle of a curved porch-type entrance. The building is painted yellowy-cream. There are arched windows to the left of the door visible. A mop handle and a piece of wooden furniture can be seen to the right of the doors.

"The hall, which has served as a school and a care home as well as a former stately home over the years, now holds seven flats within its walls and a number of #communal living areas and #SharedFacilities like washing machines and heating.

"Louise first came across Dol-llys after she was made redundant from her insurance job in London. She found herself spending more and more time away from the city, enjoying walking in the rural countryside, and realised she wanted to live there permanently.

" 'I'm a single person, so moving to a country village on your own is not that easy,' she says.

" 'Somebody mentioned [intentional] communities and said 'have you heard about them?''

"After investigating quite a few, she knew she did not want to live somewhere where she only had a bedroom and everything else was shared. And at Dol-llys, where she moved in early 2020, she found the perfect combination of community and privacy.

" 'We term ourselves as #cohousing, because we all have our separate flats,' she says, and that the set-up is not a commune.

" 'We share the grounds, we share the common rooms, we share responsibilities and decision-making, but we all have our front doors, which I think is important to everybody who chooses to live here.' "

  2. Proposal would limit #SocialSecurity benefits to $100,000 annually for couples to boost solvency

Story by Elizabeth Guevara, July 21, 2026

These solutions would generally only lower the benefits of the top 20% to 30% of earners, the CRFB said.

Excerpt: " 'If you’re getting $100,000, as a couple, in benefits, you probably have tens of #millions of dollars in #assets, and your Social Security benefit is not very important to you,' Goldwein said. 'Over time, as this phases in, it’s going to affect more people further down the income ladder, but every version that we model [is always] incredibly progressive.' "

  6. Came across this article from 2020 that I bookmarked...

#AncientTexts encouraged hope and endurance when they spoke of #EndTimes

    Published: April 13, 2020

"Other apocalyptic texts, such as the #Sibylline #Oracles, describe poetically a coming light, a 'life without care,' and a time when the 'earth will belong equally to all.' "

For those not familiar with the #SibylineOracles, this from Encyclopedia Britainnica:

"Sibylline Oracles, collection of oracular prophecies in which Jewish or Christian doctrines were allegedly confirmed by a sibyl (legendary Greek prophetess); the prophecies were actually the work of certain Jewish and Christian writers from about 150 bc to about ad 180."

  12. Non-Fiction Trilogy of sorts - "#TheLimitsToGrowth; #PowerLimitsAndProspectsForHumanSurvival; and #EarthForAllASurvivalGuideForHumanity.

So, my copy of "The Limits To Growth" is a first edition from 1972, which I bought in a used book store in 1980. Whoever owned it before ("Denison") highlighted a bunch of stuff (the old school highlighters that don't fade), and put zig-zag lines around this paragraph: "In any finite system there must be constraints that can act to stop exponential growth. These constraints are negative feedback loops. The negative loops become stronger and stronger as growth approches the ultimate limit, or carrying capacity, of the system's environment. Finally, the negative loops balance or dominate the positive ones, and growth comes to an end. In the world system the negative feedback loops involve such processes as pollution of the environment, depletion of nonrenewable resources, and famine."

Fast forward to 2021, where one of the Limits To Growth authors, #DennisMeadows, describes #RichardHeinberg's "Power - Limits And Prospects for Human Survival" as "a powerful new way of understanding the historic rise and probable fall of our species. It is an impressive, sweeping, and thought-provoking narrative." Heinberg talks about how we got to where we are today (lots of history), but also offers solutions (like #Agroecology and #Degrowth).

Finally, "#EarthForAll - A Survival Guide For Humanity" -- which was a report to the #ClubOfRome, and a 50 year follow-up to Limits To Growth. This book is where I learned about the #GiantLeapScenario that we so need to survive as a species on a viable planet.

Limits To Growth influenced my thinking at a young age. "Power" explains how we went wrong, and "Earth For All" gives me hope for the future.

  13. @dlakelan So, this idea sounds very #SolarPunk to me. And I think would be a very important part of any sort of #GiantLeap / #Earth4All scenario, which is so badly needed. Capitalism has only brought greed and destruction. The time has come to move past it!

  14. @largess Oh yeah. I'm hoping that #Earth4All pans out. I read #TheLimitsToGrowth at a very young age. It's going to take some serious change (#GiantLeapScenario) to work things out, and we're pretty much out of time (even with breakthroughs).

  15. Human #wellbeing on a #FinitePlanet towards 2100: new study shows humanity at a crossroads

A new paper by members of Earth4All’s scientific advisory team published today in Global Sustainability models two starkly different futures for humanity this century: one defined by escalating crises compounded by rising social tension, the other by a bold transformation towards wellbeing for all. The findings emphasise the importance of considering wellbeing and social cohesion when studying how planetary risks, inequality and social tensions interact.

    4 July 2025

Excerpt: "Boost social cohesion and wellbeing for successful climate action

"A key innovation of the study is the introduction of two novel indices: social tension and wellbeing. This enabled the researchers to model not just the complex interactions between economic and #environmental factors in the two scenarios, but also include social feedback loops capturing trust, public investment, and political capacity. The modelling results suggests that rising #inequality and environmental degradation fuel social tensions, which in turn reduce governments’ capacity to implement the long-term policies needed to address existential risks linked to climate change and other planetary boundaries.

" 'By integrating a social tension index and a wellbeing index, we have been able to highlight the importance of social dynamics in climate scenarios,' explained co-author #NathalieSpittler of #BOKUUniversity. 'Achieving climate goals is not just a question of technological and economic developments. If wellbeing declines and social tensions rise, this creates a negative feedback loop where the very conditions needed for transformational change become harder to achieve.'

"Conversely, the study suggests that actions to reduce inequality and increase #SocialCohesion and wellbeing are key if governments want to implement policy shifts on #climate and other global issues."

  16. Leaving you all with this essay about the #ExistentialDread a lot of us are experiencing, and how one person found hope through #SolarPunk! (And I am another one of those people!)

It's been a record-breaking #SolarPunkSunday, and a great way to celebrate a year of #Resiliency, #SharingInformation, #Rewilding, #Mending, #Gardening, and building the foundation for the future we all need! I'll re-post a few articles from yesterday, and then will call it a Solar Punk day! ! A special thanks to @BrambleBearGrrrauwling and @MaQuest !

A Future Dream - How solarpunk helped alleviate my existential dread.

Solarpunk pushes against the bleak Blade Runner future of cyberpunk that centers urban dystopias dominated by corporations and technology. Solarpunk imagines an #inclusive, #sustainable, possible future, where #renewable #technology meets #ecological #enlightenment.

by Sage Agee, Art by Yuumei, Spring 2023

"LIKE MANY OF MY GENERATION, I have known dread nearly my entire life. In fifth grade, I was assigned a research paper on the topic of my choice. I had begun to spend my weekends with my dad, hanging out at coffee shops in downtown Salem, Oregon, and chatting with adults about the news. We had just witnessed the 9/11 attacks, and the adults in my life seemed to be waking up to global issues, their fear palpable even to a young child.

"This was not long after the release of #AnInconvenientTruth, and I decided to interview my dad’s friends about #ClimateChange and their predictions for the future. When I turned in the finished paper, which detailed mass extinctions and natural disasters, my teacher, Mrs. Stark, wouldn’t accept it. She didn’t believe in climate change, she said, and I needed to study a different topic.

"After that, I felt myself slipping from endless curiosity about the world into a mindset where I had to prepare for the worst, and trust no one. This helped me create the shield I needed to get through adolescence. By then, I knew that my gender and sexuality didn’t align with typical gender roles, but I kept that secret close to my tape-bound chest.

"Solarpunk represents a movement from today’s reality toward a gritty, pragmatic, better future.

"Before my parents divorced, we went to an Evangelical church every Sunday, and I learned to pray each night before bed. These prayers became a place for me to put every bad thought I would have during the day, to pass them along to God. I had already developed a deep shame for my thoughts of being more boyish, and I prayed for these thoughts to end, just as I prayed for an end to natural disasters. I prayed for a better girl-mask. I prayed for a better world. My compulsive thinking followed me into my teenage years. In the ninth grade, I started an environmental justice group, hosting letter-writing parties and taking part in local protests at the Oregon Capitol, but when anti-green legislation passed into law, or when images emerged detailing islands of garbage in the ocean, I blamed myself for not doing more.

"This kind of thinking kept me from coming out as transgender. Every time I had an intrusive thought about growing facial hair and passing as a boy, my self-blame returned. Maybe I wasn’t trying hard enough to be a girl; maybe I just needed to date boys and straighten my hair and shave my legs and wear makeup; maybe too, I needed to do more about the environment, protest more, organize more, do something more. I kept making up versions of myself. I only talked about environmental justice around my dad’s liberal friends. I only downplayed my femininity around my queer friends.
artwork depicting someone reading in a futuristic setting

"The one place where I escaped from this constant masking and shifting was in the books I consumed. At 17, I read #UrsulaLeGuin’s series of novels, the #HainishCycle, for the first time. I was instantly drawn into the worlds she created, where gender was fluid, as in #TheLeftHandOfDarkness, where some worlds grappled with climate disaster just as some had overcome it, as in #TheDispossessed. The way she experimented with the utopian, which always included queerness and dissolved gender roles, was like nothing I had read or experienced.

"When I allowed myself to fall into these fictions, my dread would turn over into an almost hopeful outlook. I understood this as fantasy, though, and never considered taking what I had read in LeGuin into my real life. Instead, I spent years dreaming of alternate realities, where I hadn’t been born into a doomed world. To cope with the real world, I would make lists of everything I would need to survive a catastrophe, and I taught myself #SurvivalSkills, like how to build a friction fire in the backyard."

  17. #Earth4All #Argentina: Young people confront today’s challenges through debate

At a time when social and environmental crises are deepening, this initiative shows that young people are not just aware of the challenges—they are ready to lead the transformation. The real challenge is to listen to them and make room for their voices in the creation of truly transformative public policies.

    5 June 2025

"On 9 May, young people between the ages of 18 and 30 gathered simultaneously in #Córdoba, #BuenosAires, and #Tucumán to take part in the workshop 'Understanding the present to build the future we want,' part of the Earth4All Argentina National Engagement Strategy led by the #ClubOfRome – Argentinian Chapter.

"Organised in collaboration with #FundaciónAlimentaris and #JóvenesPorElClima, the workshop was part of the participatory process of the National Participation Program (NEP), an initiative aimed at gathering diagnostics, experiences, and proposals from local communities to influence public policy. Its goal is to collectively adapt the international Earth4All model to local realities. The model warns of the urgent need to move away from the current path, described as '#TooLittleTooLate,' and to move toward a '#GiantLeap' centred on #social and #EnvironmentalJustice. This transformative agenda is structured around five turnarounds: #EradicatingPoverty, #ReducingInequality, #EmpoweringWomen, transforming #FoodSystems, and driving the energy transition.

"The workshop brought together university students from the host cities, #grassroots and #EnvironmentalActivists, and civically engaged youth eager to influence #LocalPolicies and practices. Facilitated by Jóvenes por el Clima, the event was organized around two main dynamics: first, introducing the foundations and challenges of the Earth4All model; and second, mapping specific local issues and working in thematic groups aligned with the model’s five pillars, with the aim of #CoCreating concrete proposals grounded in the experiences and voices of #YoungPeople."

  18. From "Recalibration of limits to growth: An update of the #World3 model"

by Arjuna Nebel, Alexander Kling, Ruben Willamowski, Tim Schell

    First published: 13 November 2023

    4.3 Future trends

"So far, the results have mainly been considered in comparison with the empirical data for the recalibration. However, the course of the variables is also interesting in terms of future trends. Here, the model results clearly indicate the imminent end of the exponential growth curve. The excessive consumption of resources by industry and industrial agriculture to feed a growing world population is depleting reserves to the point where the system is no longer sustainable. Pollution lags behind industrial growth and does not peak until the end of the century. Peaks are followed by sharp declines in several characteristics.

"This interconnected collapse, or, as it has been called by Heinberg and Miller (2023), #polycrisis, occurring between 2024 and 2030 is caused by resource depletion, not pollution. The increase in environmental pollution occurs later and with a lower peak (Figure 3).

"However, it is important to note that the connections in the model and the recalibration are only valid for the rising edge, as many of the variables and equations represented in the model are not physical but socio-economic. It is to be expected that the complex socio-economic relationships will be rearranged and reconnected in the event of a collapse. World3 holds the relationships between variables constant. Therefore it is not useful to draw further conclusions from the trajectory after the tipping points. Rather, it is important to recognize that there are large uncertainties about the trajectory from then on, building models for this could be a whole new field of research.

"The fact is that the recalibrated model again shows the possibility of a collapse of our current system. At the same time, the BAU scenario of the 1972 model is shown to be alarmingly consistent with the most recently collected empirical data.

"#Herrington (2021) also concluded in her data comparison that the world is far from a stabilized world scenario where the #overshoot and #collapse mode is brought to a halt. As a society, we have to admit that despite 50 years of knowledge about the dynamics of the collapse of our life support systems, we have failed to initiate a systematic change to prevent this collapse. It is becoming increasingly clear that, despite #technological advances, the change needed to put us on a different trajectory will also require a change in #BeliefSystems, #mindsets, and the way we organize our society (Irwin, 2015; Wamsler & Brink, 2018). [SW model]

"At the point of collapse, the resolution of the model also reaches the limit of further plausible statements. The regional differences in demographic and economic terms are too great to be reduced to simple, highly aggregated variables. To address this problem, a new system dynamics model has been developed on the occasion of #LtG's 50th anniversary which is called Earth for all (Sandrine Dixson-Decleve et al., 2022). It introduces a regional resolution and a measure of social inequality and tension. There is also a greater focus on the causes and effects of the #ClimateCrisis. In #Earth4all, the authors no longer focus on scenarios with sharp declines in the main variables. Instead, the scenario Too little too late describes that the effects of the climate crisis will continue to increase and social tensions will rise, causing the well-being index to decline over time. In another scenario, #GiantLeap, it is shown that these negative developments could also be stopped. The authors then propose various policy changes to achieve this (Sandrine Dixson-Decleve et al., 2022). "
