  1. #Indigenous Leadership for Transformative #ClimateAction

    By Kaniela Ing & #NDNCollective

    Excerpt: "Restoring Regeneration

"Climate justice will require a significant structural shift from a #ProfitBased global #extractive economy to #NeedsBased, #localized, #RegenerativeEconomies. Anthropologists believe that, for centuries, people in many Indigenous societies worked roughly 15 hours a week to provide for their personal and communal needs. Our ancestors mastered advanced ecological management practices—like #regenerativeAgriculture , #aquaculture, #ControlledBurning, and #CoralReef replenishment — that Western empiricism is finally catching up to after decades of colonial governments banning such practices. These highly efficient Indigenous systems afforded our ancestors ample time to engage in fellowship with friends, practice arts and #crafts, learn new skills, or just relax and enjoy their lives.

"Today, we produce enough goods and services to exceed the needs of all among us, but poverty and income equality remain stark. Extractive systems endlessly require another valley, another river, another island, another continent—until there is nowhere left to occupy, conquer, pollute, and destroy. No clearer purveyor of this #ColonialMindset exists than the man who milked the most out of the #ExtractiveEconomy. Jeff Bezos, currently the richest man in the world, recently spent $5.5 billion dollars on a joyride to space using the money he’s hoarded by exploiting and abusing hundreds of thousands of workers selling mostly useless goods—made cheap by the monopoly power of Amazon and Amazon-affiliated companies—to the masses. Like a movie villain, his first comment upon witnessing the majesty of our cosmos was that we should immediately begin polluting it by exporting our trash beyond Earth’s orbit.

"We should take heart in the fact that people built our oppressive institutions, because it means that people can dismantle them and build something new. People hold the knowledge and technologies to transform society. All we need is moral fortitude and revolutionary courage. Today’s extractive systems were created and are upheld by the colonial myths of scarcity, individualism, and the sanctity of free markets. Tomorrow’s regenerative systems must be rooted in the Indigenous realities of #abundance, community codependency, and deep #reciprocal relationships between the planet and its people."

  2. Speaking with the #SolarpunkPresents Podcast

    May 20, 2025

"The latest episode of Solarpunk Presents features a conversation with #SamNabi, our project coordinator, about #OneMillionNeighbours. It’s a meandering and hopeful discussion about building relationships that translate to community power, seeing the intersections between different topics, and how the One Million Neighbours report came together."

  3. #ThunderBayON - City Spaces - Honouring Indigenous Space and Place

"The City of Thunder Bay is committed to honouring and celebrating Indigenous space and place. The Indigenous Relations and Inclusion Office will work to collaborate on new place-making initiatives and opportunities for welcoming spaces in the city to identify heritage recognition and honour history and culture by maintaining and enhancing existing spaces.

    The #SpiritGarden

The Spirit Garden was built in collaboration with Indigenous and city partners through the Prince Arthur’s Landing development, which was completed in 2011. The Spirit Garden is a space to honour the history and cultures of Indigenous peoples in the city. The Circle is reflected in the overall design of the spaces to represent inclusiveness and bridging of worldviews.

    The #HonouringCircle (#SacredFire)

On the shore of #Kitchigami (Big Ocean/Lake Superior) looking East with #Nanabijou (Sleeping Giant) on the horizon, the Honouring Circle maintains the vision of honouring #TurtleIsland through its configuring of stones surrounding the fire pit. The fire pit is also placed in the centre of the Medicine Wheel, to honour the teaching principles of the #Anishinaabe.

The #HonouringCircle is a place of contemplation, ceremony and contribution. The Anishinaabe have always recognized the geographic and cultural importance of this area.

The #CelebrationCircle (Outdoor Theatre) – Within The Spirit Garden

The form of the Celebration Circle is inspired by #RoyThomas’ concept for the space to pay homage to Turtle Island based on the Anishinaabe Creation Story. The site was designed in collaboration between Indigenous artist and architect #RyanGorrie of Thunder Bay and #BrookMcIlroy architects. Its form is inspired by traditional Anishinaabe bentwood building techniques using wood harvested by #IndigenousArtist #GeorgePrice and fabricated at #FortWilliamFirstNation.

The Circle symbolizes an '#inclusive circle' between all people and creation and is a way to honour the local Indigenous and Original Peoples of the land. It serves as a common ground – a spiritual place, a place of meditation and celebration gathering together all cultures. This space is embraced as a teaching and gathering space where stories can be shared from the perspective of the First Nations peoples who have lived on this shoreline for millennia.

  5. Proposal would limit #SocialSecurity benefits to $100,000 annually for couples to boost solvency

Story by Elizabeth Guevara, July 21, 2026

These solutions would generally only lower the benefits of the top 20% to 30% of earners, the CRFB said.

Excerpt: " 'If you’re getting $100,000, as a couple, in benefits, you probably have tens of #millions of dollars in #assets, and your Social Security benefit is not very important to you,' Goldwein said. 'Over time, as this phases in, it’s going to affect more people further down the income ladder, but every version that we model [is always] incredibly progressive.' "

  6. Alrighty then. Wrapping up #SolarPunkSunday... Next week I'll be posting about #PestControl, #PoisonIvy, #Herbs, #FoodPreservation, and how to turn a #BBQ Grill into a #Smoker, and whatever other topics come up. I may focus on #SolarPunk-related resources in the #UK or #Canada -- just to be cheeky! 😉 Boosting and re-posting some SPS posts from yesterday. Thanks to everyone who used the hashtag and chimed in! As usual, I learned a LOT!

  7. So, I'm really digging the idea of having a #ToolLibrary that accepts #TimeBasedCurrency instead of dollars! Wow! I used to be part of the #PortlandME #TimeDollarNetwork (which is still around), and one could even use #TimeDollars to rent #CommunitySpace for events! Having more #TimeBanks is one way to wean ourselves off of #petrodollars and #technodollars!

  8. So, it's nice when folks with money can install solar, heat pumps, buy EVs, and be all high and mighty about being "Green". But for most people, those things are out of reach. We need #ClimateSolutions that are accessible, affordable, and don't trash the environment!

‘An equal and habitable world is possible’: academics set out sweeping vision for planetary survival

Global report provides an alternative to climate breakdown, political extremism and economic tensions

    Jonathan Watts
    Thu 4 Jun 2026

Excerpt: "[The plan] offers a set of bold policy proposals, including hefty #WealthTaxes on #billionaires, sharp reductions in working hours, a change in diets and a shift of investment from materially intense sectors like industry and #mining to education and health.

    [...]

"This 'plan for equality and prosperity within planetary boundaries' is the product of 45 authors based on databases compiled by more than 200 researchers from the world.

"At its core is the concept of sufficiency – the idea that people can enjoy a prosperous, healthy life without constantly striving to consume or accumulate more #MaterialPossessions that degrade the #NaturalWorld on which all life depends.

"To achieve this, the authors envisage three steps: more than halving average working time from 2,100 hours a year to 1,000 hours, roughly equivalent to a two-and-a-half-day working week; encouraging people to #EatLessRedMeat, which is the main driver of deforestation and ecological destruction; and refocusing the economy toward #LowConsumption activities by more than doubling #Education spending to €8,400 euros (£7,250) a person and #healthcare spending to 14,400 euros.

"Piketty said: 'One extra euro of GDP in education and health has three to four times less material footprint and energy consumption than one extra euro of GDP in the manufacturing sector. So that’s why the sectoral shifts are hugely important.' "

  12. @rmblaber1956 Hey, I read #LtG many years ago. I think some technology is needed, but we should also have lo-tech whenever possible. Have you read any of the follow-ups to #LimitsToGrowth? #Earth4All and #GiantLeap is what's needed now -- with an eye toward preserving and protecting nature.

  14. Came across this article from 2020 that I bookmarked...

#AncientTexts encouraged hope and endurance when they spoke of #EndTimes

    Published: April 13, 2020

"Other apocalyptic texts, such as the #Sibylline #Oracles, describe poetically a coming light, a 'life without care,' and a time when the 'earth will belong equally to all.' "

For those not familiar with the #SibylineOracles, this from Encyclopedia Britainnica:

"Sibylline Oracles, collection of oracular prophecies in which Jewish or Christian doctrines were allegedly confirmed by a sibyl (legendary Greek prophetess); the prophecies were actually the work of certain Jewish and Christian writers from about 150 bc to about ad 180."

  15. So, this is a timely topic! From the latest issue of #InTheseTimes! The connection between Amazon Deforestation and CEO land grabs in the Western United States -- bought with blood money!

    Fortress Yellowstone

The #UltraRich are fortifying themselves inside one of America’s last intact #ecosystems—with money plundered from ecological #SacrificeZones around the world

by Joseph Bullington, April 6, 2026

Excerpt: "Some of these ultra-rich ranch owners celebrate the natural beauty of their land and are ardent conservationists when it comes to the Yellowstone ecosystem. In digging into their business dealings, however, I found that most of these landowners accumulated their wealth through industries that help drive the destruction of nature elsewhere. Their ranks include private equity investors, oil and gas billionaires and real estate developers. "

"Now, instead of forests full of fruits and animals and mandioca clearings, industrial soy plantations press in on #Açaizal like a closing fist. There is no escape from the onslaught of #monoculture. Manoel shows me where rows of broken cornstalks run right up against the edge of the community’s soccer field, which the soy farmers also want to plow. The soybeans and corn, like those in the United States, are genetically engineered to withstand the #herbicides and #pesticides the farmers dump on them to beat back weeds and pests, but the chemicals drift, says Manoel, making it impossible to grow fruits and vegetables and #mandioca nearby. The streams run low and full of poison."

  17. Non-Fiction Trilogy of sorts - "#TheLimitsToGrowth; #PowerLimitsAndProspectsForHumanSurvival; and #EarthForAllASurvivalGuideForHumanity.

So, my copy of "The Limits To Growth" is a first edition from 1972, which I bought in a used book store in 1980. Whoever owned it before ("Denison") highlighted a bunch of stuff (the old school highlighters that don't fade), and put zig-zag lines around this paragraph: "In any finite system there must be constraints that can act to stop exponential growth. These constraints are negative feedback loops. The negative loops become stronger and stronger as growth approches the ultimate limit, or carrying capacity, of the system's environment. Finally, the negative loops balance or dominate the positive ones, and growth comes to an end. In the world system the negative feedback loops involve such processes as pollution of the environment, depletion of nonrenewable resources, and famine."

Fast forward to 2021, where one of the Limits To Growth authors, #DennisMeadows, describes #RichardHeinberg's "Power - Limits And Prospects for Human Survival" as "a powerful new way of understanding the historic rise and probable fall of our species. It is an impressive, sweeping, and thought-provoking narrative." Heinberg talks about how we got to where we are today (lots of history), but also offers solutions (like #Agroecology and #Degrowth).

Finally, "#EarthForAll - A Survival Guide For Humanity" -- which was a report to the #ClubOfRome, and a 50 year follow-up to Limits To Growth. This book is where I learned about the #GiantLeapScenario that we so need to survive as a species on a viable planet.

Limits To Growth influenced my thinking at a young age. "Power" explains how we went wrong, and "Earth For All" gives me hope for the future.

  19. @dlakelan So, this idea sounds very #SolarPunk to me. And I think would be a very important part of any sort of #GiantLeap / #Earth4All scenario, which is so badly needed. Capitalism has only brought greed and destruction. The time has come to move past it!
