Non-Fiction Trilogy of sorts - "#TheLimitsToGrowth; #PowerLimitsAndProspectsForHumanSurvival; and #EarthForAllASurvivalGuideForHumanity.
So, my copy of "The Limits To Growth" is a first edition from 1972, which I bought in a used book store in 1980. Whoever owned it before ("Denison") highlighted a bunch of stuff (the old school highlighters that don't fade), and put zig-zag lines around this paragraph: "In any finite system there must be constraints that can act to stop exponential growth. These constraints are negative feedback loops. The negative loops become stronger and stronger as growth approches the ultimate limit, or carrying capacity, of the system's environment. Finally, the negative loops balance or dominate the positive ones, and growth comes to an end. In the world system the negative feedback loops involve such processes as pollution of the environment, depletion of nonrenewable resources, and famine."
Fast forward to 2021, where one of the Limits To Growth authors, #DennisMeadows, describes #RichardHeinberg's "Power - Limits And Prospects for Human Survival" as "a powerful new way of understanding the historic rise and probable fall of our species. It is an impressive, sweeping, and thought-provoking narrative." Heinberg talks about how we got to where we are today (lots of history), but also offers solutions (like #Agroecology and #Degrowth).
Finally, "#EarthForAll - A Survival Guide For Humanity" -- which was a report to the #ClubOfRome, and a 50 year follow-up to Limits To Growth. This book is where I learned about the #GiantLeapScenario that we so need to survive as a species on a viable planet.
Limits To Growth influenced my thinking at a young age. "Power" explains how we went wrong, and "Earth For All" gives me hope for the future.

[Thread] So, the book #LimitsToGrowth is back in the news after the projections were updated. I've been doing a lot of reading and thinking about this topic (the preface of the book 1177BC, The Year Civilization Collapsed being the impetus).
My conclusion is that only #Degrowth and implementation of a lot of #SolarPunkSunday ideas (repairing stuff, building community, rewilding) will help us adapt to the coming changes. That's why I started SPS -- to highlight events, ideas and to build connections.
Yes, I am known for "Doomposting," but like with most things, I try and find solutions as well. Yeah, all the #Fascist BS isn't helping -- in fact, it's a symptom of the desperation of the elites to hold onto their #Capitalistic, #Colonial, #hierarchical ways. And, well, we all know where that leads.
We may not be able to fix the climate or all the other things that are going wrong right away, but we can try to adapt, and make sure by doing so, we aren't making the problems worse for all the beings that live here on planet Earth.
I'll be posting some quotes in this thread -- some with commentary, some just by themselves. Do humans have all the answers? Not sure (I know I don't)... But sticking our collective heads in the sand is NOT an option!

"The Limits to Growth, originally published in 1972, was a groundbreaking study that modeled the dynamics of our human presence on the planet. The team behind it, led by Dennis Meadows, found that continuing with a '#BusinessAsUsual” #growth model would likely lead to #environmental and #economic collapse within a century. At the time, their discoveries sparked huge controversy among scientists, scholars, and the general public. In the decades since, those discoveries have been supported by patterns of growth, environmental health, and resource use.

(6/8) 2022 saw the 50th anniversary of #TheLimitstoGrowth. The #ClubofRome therefore published "Limits and Beyond: 50 years on from The Limits to Growth, what did we learn and what's next?" as well as “Earth for ALL / A Survivalguide for Humanity”. It said that a radical change was needed and suggested 5 turnarounds. Weeks later, COP 27 met in Sharm el-Sheikh and produced little more than the next compromise and set of climate targets. #sustainability

(5/8) In December 2015, COP 21 took place in Paris and was a complete success: 196 parties agreed on a legally binding international agreement on climate change. Global warming was to be limited to well below 2, preferably 1.5 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial levels.
