  3. STILL NEEDED: eSIMs for Gaza!

"[...] In so many ways we never thought we’d be here, still doing this two years later, weathering the storm of grief from losing Alice from this earthly plane. But in other ways, maybe this logo is part of the good within that unexpected steadfastness. That we are continuing, and being a part of building alternative systems that, god willing, will eventually lead to a thriving, free and autonomous Palestine.

    Til freedom.

In love and disabled Asian persistence,

    Alice, Jane and Leah <3"

  5. I followed Alice Wong on the bird site, and one of her projects was Crips for eSIMs for Gaza. Here is their update from October 8th, a very worthwhile read:

If you can and would like to help Palestinians in Gaza, any amount however small is incredibly welcome.

  7. Gutted at the news of the passing of Alice Wong today.

In her final words: Don't let the bastards grind you down!

  8. A Beetoota Advocate satire piece e today reads: Demise of Menulog proves there’s no such thing as ethical food delivery you fat fuck.’ And then (paraphrase) no such thing as ethical food delivery…‘anyone who thought otherwise is, frankly, a fat fuck’. And the comments to my reply are worse. Here’s the thing: Punching down on fat people isn’t funny - it’s hurting a marginalised group. There are a myriad of reasons why people are fat, and in the vast majority of cases, it has nothing to do with being a lazy ‘fat fuck’ who can’t be arsed cooking or going out to get food. Rather, it involves complex issues such as socioeconomic status, food availability (and deserts), chronic illness and disability, mental illness, iatrogenic medicine (eg many medications esp for mental illness cause weight gain), racism, and other intersecting factors. @betootaadvocate can and should be better than this. Good satire is always about punching up, not down 😖 #fat #fatacceptance #fatacceptancemovement #fatactivism #bodyshaming #bodyshamingiswrong #disabilityactivism #bodyneutrality

  9. "I’ve seen a lot of people lashing out at people horizontally, and my gut sense is that sometimes it happens because the folks who are lashing out are definitely super traumatized, in crisis, feel and are really powerless in a lot of ways,” disability justice organizer Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha in conversation with host Kelly Hayes and Elliott Fukui, who develops community safety strategies for emotional wellness and safety, about why people are struggling right now, what’s keeping people alive and engaged, and what we need to create together to survive these times.

  11. "Under capitalist structures that tie people’s worth to their productivity, where value is determined largely by how productive you are, ableism is used to frame disability, "non-productivity" as a terrifying identity to hold. Ableism therefore doesn’t only affect disabled people but affects everyone: we are all being judged on our ability/inability to be a good productive and obedient worker for the capitalists/fascists."

this article about the dreadful NDIS changes Shorten’s Labor Party proposed. They decided to share it to facebook but the post was removed by fb. Please give it a read and share it around. It is looking like this bill will go through and it will have dire consequences for disabled Australians.

  17. Palestinians in Gaza urgently need more eSIMS!

98% of the amount the Disability Visibility Project has collected they've spent to keep people connected. Link to information on the eSIMs project: disabilityvisibilityproject.co

"Poet Rasha Abdulhadi, a disabled, queer Palestinian Southerner, invites us to do everything in our power to refuse the genocide against Palestinian people and in so doing, encourages us to make connections between our struggles and theirs. In their bio in The Offing and elsewhere, they share, “Wherever you are, whatever sand you can throw on the gears of genocide, do it now. If it’s a handful, throw it. If it’s a fingernail full, scrape it out and throw. Get in the way however you can. The elimination of the Palestinian people is not inevitable. We can refuse with our every breath and action. We must.” As disabled people we owe our disabled kin in Gaza to get in the way."

  21. CW: Long Covid Awareness Day, family, mutual aid, radical collective care

Also, really wanted to say on #LongCovidAwarenessDay how grateful I am for my amazing partner who cares for me and supports me, unconditionally, so much on a day to day basis; I am not sure what I would do without them. I also am lucky to have a few close family members, some who have always been supportive and then others who seem to be responding positively to my change in approach of being a stronger advocate for myself and my illness. Again, I am really thankful for how much of a positive impact the online community has had on me with this. Importantly, this also relates into the need for radical intersectional praxis regarding Mutual Aid e.g. Mask Blocs, creating and sharing resources with each other, and building communal care collectives that foster new, healthier, solidarity framed relationships, resisting state violence collectively, rather than having to be 'lucky' enough to have people close to you, especially family, there for us.

  23. "It’s the greatest medical scandal of the 21st century. For decades, patients with ME/CFS (myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome) have been told they can make themselves better by changing their attitudes. This devastating condition, which afflicts about 250,000 people in the UK, was psychologised by many doctors and scientists, adding to the burden of a terrible physiological illness."

  25. Building on their presentation last Fall, abolitionist organizer Moss Williams is returning with another virtual event on antifascism and disability! On Sunday the 25th, Moss will weave together history and theory to explore the relationship between fascism and ableism—and how both are driving attacks on our bodily autonomy.

  27. CW: Longish post reflecting on comments today by Jeremy Hunt, Chancellor of the TERF, plague 'Kingdom' that is the UK:

Central to this is late capitalism, as we see furthering of gross inequalities and the corresponding drive of divide and rule politics to distract from said inequalities. Even though this is no surprise and things will get worse regardless of whether the Tories or Labour win the next election, I have found my mood really affected by this discourse and rhetoric today and also thinking about what this will mean in terms of day-to-day impact on disabled people's lives as we battle with the state on a daily basis, with it already such an ideologically brutal system. As always, we have a fight on our hands and we have to do this together, collectively, through mutual aid, radical communal care, to look after and be there for each other against the state, the gaslighting and the punitive practices and institutions.

  29. As a (re) #introduction on this new server, I have been on Mastodon for a few months (see previous post for why I have moved servers) after not using social media for most of the last 3 years. I wanted to connect with people on Mastodon - and through its decentralised, anarchistic ethos - with similar interests and beliefs, especially after becoming increasingly isolated through having #LongCovid since 2020 where I am now pretty much housebound, the difficulties I have had with communication because of my #ObsessiveCompulsiveDisorder alongside living in accordance to the scientific fact that #CovidIsNotOver and #CovidIsAirborne. In the brief time I have been on Mastodon I feel very lucky to have connected with the people I have, which has had a positive impact on my mental health and life. I look forward to building on these connections and also chatting with more people who are interested in things like #Anarchism #MutualAid #RadicalCommunalCare #Intersectionality #Veganism #StarTrek #DisabilityJustice #DisabilityActivism #AntiCapitalism #SciFi and #Sociology to name a few topics/interests!
