When I hear that phrase, I think of the seven cholera pandemics. Europe must have breathed a sigh of relief after the 2nd one (1826-1837). I'm sure they couldn't have imagined the 3rd pandemic (1846-1860) would be so much worse. That one finally sparked investments in sanitation -- including Haussmann's renovation of Paris.

"This survey is open to all Clinically Vulnerable people, those in their families, and also people who wear masks in the UK. It asks about your experience of mask-wearing, the new protest law, and how these affect your daily life. Some questions ask about your health, or the health of a Clinically Vulnerable person in your household.
"What the new law does: From 29 June 2026, under the Crime and Policing Act 2026, police in England and Wales can designate an area around a protest for up to 24 hours (extendable to 48). Inside a designated area, wearing anything that conceals your identity — including a face mask or respirator — is a criminal offence, punishable by up to a month's imprisonment or a fine. There is a health provision, but it works as a defence, not an exemption: a person wearing a mask in a designated area commits the offence, and must then prove their health reason afterwards — potentially after being stopped or arrested.
"It takes about 4 minutes to complete.
"Who is collecting this information: Clinically Vulnerable Families (CVF), registered with the Information Commissioner's Office as a data controller [ZB887575]."

But I wouldn't say we "collectively just decided" to abandon 2020's gains. Some rich people poured a lot of money into making things go backwards, for their own benefit.
The media push for "covid is over, back to normal now" was gigantic.

My reflections on the leftist-ableism survey (see above)...
I thought about it and I think I don't currently identify as disabled. I sort of feel "disabled-adjacent", so to speak. I have _been_ disabled, and it might well take only one covid infection to put me back there.
So I don't plan to fill in the survey page myself. But I took a peek at the page out of curiosity, and thought about it a bit.
Covid precautions are to me a key indicator of the ableism or not of an event.
For my own boundaries, an event doesn't necessarily have to be 100% masked (and I realise there can be incompatible access needs on that front). I was pretty comfortable at BiCon last year, with a mix of masked & unmasked people and a lot of open windows.
But I want to see
- that the organisers welcome and encourage masking for those who can & want to.
- that they've thought in advance about air quality, windows and filters.
- that they've thought about where maskers can safely go to eat or drink.
- and generally that they actively welcome attempts to reduce infection risks.A vibe of "covid is over now and we don't need to bother with this stuff" is alienating to me, and, yes, ableist.
I was happy to see that the Brighton survey proactively asks about masking at events - and I think there's a lot more to say about that territory. I hope they get some good answers.

今ふと思ってゾッとしたことだけど
最近始まった現代設定の漫画には「AI」（チャットボット系）を使用するキャラクターがもうちょこちょこ見かけてる
ここ1〜2年で押し付けられ始めたばかりなのに
でもその一方、コロナの存在を触れる現代設定の漫画は１つも見たことない（流行り出した当初のコロナをメインテーマとする短編な作品を除いて）
日本だけでも（後遺症の話はおろか）毎年数万人が亡くなられているのに
うまく言えないけど、普通におかしい
世間との認識の差がどんどん広がっていく😩something horrifying that I just realized
I've now seen several comics set in the modern day which have characters use """""AI""""" (LLM chatbots), in spite of it only having started to be foisted on us in the past year or two
Meanwhile (excluding a few standalone exceptions from the start of the pandemic wherein it was The Focus of the story), I have seen 0 instances of covid coming up in series set in the modern day, period
the disease that continues to kill and disable tens of thousands of people every year
like, I can't put it into words, but the dissonance makes my skin crawl 😩 -
Children who are too young to mask deserve to be in public without contracting a deadly and/or disabling disease (or any disease, really).
Everyone who chooses not to mask in public forces parents to choose between isolation and high risk.
Everyone who chooses not to mask in public decreases the quality of life for families with young children.

ETA: Everyone I’ve talked to so far says you can only get vaccinated 1x/year in Spain. My hope is that none of the people who replied are covid conscious, so they probably wouldn’t know about some ways to make this happen. So I’m definitely begging for boosts and replies because I don’t want to have to live under a rock for 6 months each year 😭

Check this canadian interview with a Mount Sinai (NY) chronic disease specialist. Up to one in five people with COVID-19 develop LONG COVID, meaning three months after having the disease they still do not recover their full abilities.
The specialist affirms that each reinfection, even moderate, of COVID-19 subtracts between 2-6% of IQ.
LONG COVID is a disease that causes systemic damage, especially to the immune system, causing T-cell exhaustion and triggering latent diseases or exposing the body to new pathogens from which it would have been able to defend itself before. Worth a listen:

Story by Elizabeth Hlavinka, August 29, 2023"When 11-year-old Jack Coviello contracted COVID-19 in January 2022, his worst symptom was a sore throat that kept him out of school for a week. A couple of days later, graver symptoms started to appear: gastrointestinal issues, tachycardia, panic attacks, and extreme fatigue that kept him sleeping 20 hours a day.
"It would be a full month of running tests in which doctors continued to say Jack was 'fine,' until his pediatrician diagnosed him with post-COVID syndrome, also known as long COVID, and referred him to a specialized clinic, said his mother, Kelli Coviello, who is a principal's assistant at an elementary school in Massachusetts.
"'It's been a challenge of them not really, truly understanding,' Coviello told Salon in a phone interview. "They think it's just school avoidance, and he doesn't want to come in or maybe it's just anxiety, and all this other stuff. … But he's an 11-year-old boy, who is looking at you saying, 'Am I dying? What's happening to me?'"
"Jack is one of thousands of children that has been diagnosed with long COVID. Last month, the National Institutes of Health updated its considerations for long COVID to say the burden of the condition in children "may be quite large." Studies estimating its prevalence in pediatric populations are limited and conflicting, estimating up to 25% of children infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus could go on to develop long COVID, though it's more likely between 2% and 10%. Older children with existing chronic diseases or who had a more severe COVID-19 infection have an increased risk.
"As COVID cases rise again and new variants emerge, coupled with school starting up again, previous waves indicate that long COVID cases could spike along with hospitalizations and deaths. Though kids generally have milder infections, they aren't always spared from the worst outcomes of infection.
"However, evidence suggests long COVID is underestimated in adults, and the same is likely true for children. Plus, some providers still don't know much about long COVID, which may delay diagnoses, said Dr. Alexandra Yonts, a pediatric infectious disease physician at the Pediatric Post-COVID program at Children's National Hospital.
"'I've heard from a lot of our families that they had to go to multiple different doctors to even find someone that believed what their child was experiencing was true,' Yonts told Salon in a phone interview."
