I don’t have a lot of spoons so please excuse any mistakes. I just wanted to dispel some myths that MP Bill Shorten is spreading about his ableist NDIS reforms.
He starts off by saying that these reforms will “put people with disabilities back at the heart of the scheme”. This couldn’t be further from the truth. This legislation will mean that many disabled Australians can no longer access supports they previously were able to on the scheme. It will also mean that disabled people will only be able to access supports for their “primary disability”. This completely ignores the fact that many disabled people are multiply disabled.
Every single one of the disability representative organisations in australia condemned this bill, so please tell me, how does Bill pushing this bill through against the wishes of the disabled community demonstrate putting us “back at the heart of the scheme”?
He then rambles for the next 6 replies about how “there has always been a list” and “having a list isn’t bad actually”. Before giving a prime example for why abled people should never have gotten the opportunity to dictate what supports disabled people should be bale to access in the first place. Sure, he has acknowledged now that menstrual products shouldn’t have been labeled as a “lifestyle product” but what has he actually done to make sure “mistakes” like this don’t wind up on the list anyway.
His draft list is extremely reductive. It is a prime example of why we shouldn’t have abled people dictate what supports disabled people need in the first place. Many basic things like noise cancelling headphones, ear defenders/ear muffs, stim tools are just completely left off the list as they aren’t “specialised for disabled people”. It also means that people will be forced in many cases to spend their funds on more expensive “specialised” alternatives to things that they were previously able to get. Fall detection wristbands/watches are really important for a lot of people, but many have found smart watches to be more affordable and more reliable than the specialised alternatives.
Bill claims this list will make it clear what disabled Australians can spend their NDIS funds on. I have seen nothing but confusion about this list so it is failing even at that. Many disabled Australians are left uncertain and fearful about what they will be able to spend their funds on. -

The Honourable Peter Dutton has just referred to The Honourable Bill Shorten as "a political animal" in an attempt to criticise his comments about the Robodebt Royal Commission.
Hello? Sitting politician? Generally accepted that they are *expected* to be political?
