  1. Internalized ableism is so pervasive in our society that it’s affecting you in ways you’ve been trained not to notice. Ways that you may be discriminating against yourself, and giving yourself a harder time than you really need to. 𝘼𝙣𝙙 𝙞𝙩'𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙛𝙖𝙪𝙡𝙩.

It's the CAN'T culture: The C̲apitalist, C̲olonized, A̲bleist, N̲eurotypical, and T̲raumatized culture, the society we live in. It's not you.

  6. Autistic people are famously fond of logic, and data.

We’ve also repeatedly ‘failed’ in tests designed to evaluate our empathy.

Tests which I found more interesting as a ‘spot the assumption’ exercise than serious research – or at least, serious research into what the studies professed to be about.

(I wrote a thread on it, "Have you wondered where the claim that autistic people lack empathy came from?", link: mas.to/@KatyElphinstone/116070)

  16. What if you stopped blaming yourself for things that aren’t actually your fault?

What if you stopped pushing yourself so hard, getting on your own case, denying yourself accommodations, discriminating against yourself in ways that have been so normalized you don’t even notice you’re doing it? 1/2

  21. Internalized ableism, as I see it, is a deeply ingrained way of thinking that creates unnecessary pain and distress by comparing your current reality with some fictional ideal of what people "should" be able to do. It’s that “should” thing that’s really the key.

I wrote a blog post about it and how to dissolve it here: autismchrysalis.com/2024/04/13

  26. I have nothing against watching TV in my pajamas, but it is a very limited scope of what rest could look like.

Because rest isn't necessarily about what you're doing and for how long, it's more about the mindset you have when doing it.

Doing something like painting, building a model train set or rock climbing can all be considered rest if you're enjoying it, guilt and shame free.

  31. New preprint: I propose epiphanesthesia as a candidate third functional category of interoceptive content, distinct from homeostatic and affective signals, with a neurobiological hypothesis and four falsifiable predictions involving a dissociation in high-alexithymia individuals.

Critical reading welcome before peer review. Boost toward interoception/alexithymia researchers appreciated.

Alexithymia is not an absence. It is a “low-noise” operating system optimized for logic rather than biochemical storms. I explore this paradox between neurodivergence and neural architecture in this essay.
