  1. Is veganism really extreme? 👀

#Veganism : You have two cows but you "have" them like you have a friend — not as property. Their breastmilk is for their children — not for adults with a fetish for nonconsentual interspieces suckling.

  3. I didn't always realize this but "A plant based food system is the biggest way to combat climate change and deforestation" is malthusianism transposed onto human supremacy.

What is the difference between "livestock eat the majority of crops and drink a lot of water" and "There are too many humans the most effective solution to climate change is to have less mouths to feed and less energy demand"

For a while I excused this because I saw depopulation as an unavoidable consequence of market shifts, after all I'm not advocating they be killed its the farmers who would see them as an un-recouped investment and would have them killed

But this is just endorsement with extra steps, there is no way to say that water and land usage are a benefit of a plant based diet without it being human supremacist.

Yes I know I'm inviting the overpopulation antivegan argument but I'm at the point where I'm like "our species has made this ethical bed now we need to lie in it and bear the cost of caring for the population of moral patients we've created"

I recognize that with the way the world is atm the farmers will kill the livestock they don't sell. But I act to prefigure the world I want to create not to compromise with the one that already exists.

I appreciate that not everyone can do physically demanding (or otherwise risky) activism and I didn't mean to imply that you were a liberal but I fear that the human-centric approach has a tendancy to attract liberals because it is quite compatible with a reformist attitude - if all you have to do is make different consumer choices then you don't need to endorse more extreme antispeciesist action. But when we bake the perspective of the victim into the message from the start there is no way to twist it or coopt it because the focus is always on the immediate harm and how those systems can be dismantled rather than how those systems profit or disadvantage humans.

I have also helped several people start and settle into veganism and I never shy away from pointing directly at the harm and calling out hypocrisy, self-serving rationalizations, logical fallacies etc. Am I being shitty by being direct? By calling people non-human animal abusers and murderers when those same conversations have led to them becoming committed vegans themselves?

    1) b.
I believe that you have had more "success" with convincing people to eat a plant based diet for their own sake, but then why would they stop buying honey or "animal-tested" products or supporting non-human racing or zoos/aquariums or just leather and fur products like just off the top of my head a badger hair shaving brush what is the benefit to the individual to avoid these things

    1) c.
You can't combat a poisoned well by toning down your advocacy that's exactly what the flesh propagandists want they want you to quiet down and stop taking extreme actions that might hurt their profits. "Injustice is never abolished by appealing to the sensibilities of the oppressor" At this moment we need more extremists not more liberal vegans and plant based dieters, the movement will continue to grow with or without you based on outreach strategy you have briefly outlined, but the radical flank of veganism is extremely small and can use all the help it can get.

    1) d.
Fundamentally veganism is a rights issue the focus should never ever be on how veganism can benefit humans, its ok to talk about it but to center vegan activism entirely around humans is literally de-centering the victim and plays right into speciesist narratives about how humans are the first priority and other animals exist for our benefit, except in this veganified version those animals exist to support the biosphere we live in rather than as a source of materials

    2)
see 1) d. , by not presenting the abuse of non-human animals in the foreground it gives implicit license to the abuse by implying that veganism is something that is for humans or even for the benefit of the individual framing veganism as an amoral position or a lifestyle choice. In much the same way that you don't get someone to stop physical abuse to humans by trying to convince them that it would be good for their mental health to be less violent. The problem in both human and non-human cases is either outright supremacism or disinterestedly profiting from others suffering while actively ignoring the harm so they can sleep at night

  10. @mattwebbdev "I'm not going to be shitty to people if they're not vegan" = More concerned with the approval of the oppressors than their victims. What exactly would you consider being shitty: telling someone they should stop killing innocent sentient beings?

  18. @Brian @Arseni understand-veganism.com/ claims that backyard eggs are a defensible utilitarian position - as a utilitarian I disagree: Backyard eggs are wrong because it is theft which causes direct harm. Hens like to brood on unfertilised eggs and also like to eat them raw. Especially since layer hens are bred to lay 30x more eggs than they would in the wild in order to prevent calcium deficiency the best thing to do with their eggs is feed them back to them.

All of this can be understood through a utilitarian lens and rule utilitarianism can cover abstract abuses more typically thought of as deontological like treating someone as a means to an end
