The study recruited 122 prominent academics from 26 countries, representing 11 different disciplines. Who holds the authority to define the "necessity" of a cesarean birth? While researchers, healthcare providers, journalists, public health authorities, and advocates from around the world routinely condemn high cesarean rates, the fact remains that biomedical guidelines and ideological norms always take priority over birthing women's authority in birth. Removing a woman's ability to dictate her own birth experience through denying her access to an elective cesarean exposes the illusion of informed choice and bodily autonomy for all women.
