"The Trump administration proposed on Monday to significantly limit the Environmental Protection Agency’s authority to limit pollution in wetlands, rivers and other bodies of water across the country.

"The proposed rule could strip federal protections from millions of acres of wetlands and streams, potentially threatening sources of clean drinking water for millions of Americans. It was a victory for a range of business interests that have lobbied to scale back the #CleanWaterAct of 1972, including farmers, home builders, #RealEstateDevelopers, oil drillers and #petrochemical manufacturers."

This year, #Indigenous groups in Northern #Ontario have announced a ban on blanket herbicide use, while in #NovaScotia, residents have resorted to peaceful #DirectAction to enforce their own ban.

The #ForestIndustry routinely dumps tons of chemicals like #glyphosate, the main ingredient in #Roundup weedkiller, on logged areas to kill off naturally-regenerated trees and shrubs in favour of commercial #TreeFarms. The problem is, these herbicides are #lethal to frogs, lizards, and salamanders. They wipe out #MedicinalPlants and berry bushes that Indigenous people and #wildlife rely on. Glyphosate, a suspected #carcinogen, #contaminates #rivers and #groundwater far and wide through indiscriminate spraying.

It’s no surprise that big #polluting companies are not happy about annual #CarbonTax increases. But it is #unfair that #BritishColumbians must pay the full carbon tax when the #OilAndGas industry, whose production is responsible for more than one-quarter of #BritishColumbia #CarbonEmissions, gets a carbon #TaxBreak.

The new system will also have a negative impact on B.C.’s carbon #TaxRevenues. In 2024-25, carbon tax revenues will be about $500 million lower than they would have been under the old system. This #RevenueLoss means fewer dollars to pay for #ClimateAction.

These changes point to a #BCgovernment that is far too cosy with the oil and gas #industry. And they make no sense given the urgency of acting on #ClimateChange. #Disasters in 2021 alone caused between $11 billion and $16 billion in damage to the #BCeconomy.

If B.C. really wants to be a #climate leader, the government must stop pandering to lobbying by the oil and gas industry that is causing climate change and act in the interests of all British Columbians

In Nicaragua, the assassinations and imprisonment of #LandDefenders has fractured families and communities, presenters told the United Nations Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

"In Algeria, the people have barely survived 3,000 years of violent #colonization and #genocide.
'Other people should not undergo what we have experienced – which is the case now in #Palestine,' said the representative from the Algeria Association, Learned Society of scientific research, religious and mystical bodies. Describing the genocide in Algeria, he said France has thousands of bones and craniums of the people in French museums.

"An Indigenous woman from #Khakassia Republic in Siberia described the coal and gold mining: 'Coal is mined, despite mass protests, the government used land, private property for this, and citizens were driven out of their homes.' Now, she said, the conditions are no longer good for livestock breeding, which is their way of life.

"'The government is only interested in the presence of natural resources -- but we are a resource ourselves,' she told the #UnitedNations.

"'Our language is disappearing, and we only have one school in the republic where the language is taught. We are #Khakas but we do not govern #Khakassia.'

"'Nothing has been done to protect our land. The main priority is the mining for materials.'

"'I also note the #Shors are suffering from gold mining, they have territory for traditional nature management created by the Republic of Khakassia, traditionally they are fishers and hunters and so on.'

The #CowichanRiver #estuary is one of the largest & most important in #BritishColumbia. The #watershed drains 90,000 hectares & provides #CriticalHabitat to dozens of #fish species, including #steelhead, #Chinook, #chum, #coho & #PinkSalmon, as well as brown, #cutthroat & #RainbowTrout. But the #Cowichan’s troubles are by no means unique; they are a #CaseStudy for a much larger problem.

#TimberCompanies store #LogBooms all along the #BCcoast, says Jamieson Atkinson, a fish #biologist & program manager for the #Aquatic #Research & #Restoration Centre at #BritishColumbiaConservationFoundation. “It’s shocking.” While #estuaries make up less than 3% of British Columbia’s coast, they provide rich #habitat for 80% of the province’s coastal #wildlife. #BritishColumbia #OldGrowth #activists have taken before and after photos of a large area of an #AncientGrove that was #clearcut on #VancouverIsland near #PortAlberni in the #NahmintValley.

The #AncientForestAlliance says that many of the massive #trees that were cut down were over 500 years old, some being up to nine feet across.

Now that the grove has been cut, they are urging the #BCgovernment to immediately correct misidentified #AtRisk #OldGrowth #forests that could be eligible for #LoggingDeferrals.
