La généralisation est une disposition naturelle de l’esprit, sans elle, aucune connaissance n’est possible. Mais elle devient biaisée lorsqu’elle saute à une conclusion trop vite, trop loin, à partir de trop peu.

Le biais de généralisation consiste à tirer une conclusion universelle à partir d’un nombre insuffisant de cas particuliers, ou à appliquer une règle valable dans certains contextes à des domaines où elle ne s’applique pas.

Nous avons tendance à classer tout le monde dans le même panier. Les Américains sont comme cela, et les Européens comme ceci. La généralisation, à elle seule, nous propulse dans le monde des préjugés.  

Et c’est aussi vrai pour la dimension temporelle qui nous pousse à penser qu’une expérience passée va toujours se répliquer dans notre vie. J’ai échoué, je vais encore échouer.

Le biais de généralisation n’est pas une aberration, il est la conséquence d’une capacité adaptative fondamentale. Le cerveau est capable de détecter des modèles, de construire des modèles du monde à partir d’expériences limitées. Cette économie cognitive est indispensable à la survie, si un champignon de telle forme m’a rendu malade, mieux vaut les éviter tout en continuant à manger les autres.

Le problème surgit lorsque ce jugement rapide est appliqué à des domaines qui exigent plus de nuance, dont les personnes, les cultures, les systèmes complexes.

Le biais de généralisation est l’un des mécanismes centraux de la production des préjugés. Généraliser à partir de quelques individus pour caractériser un groupe entier, c’est précisément la structure du racisme, du sexisme, de la xénophobie. Ce n’est pas seulement une erreur logique, le biais peut entraîner une violence épistémique qui efface la singularité des personnes en les réduisant à une appartenance spécifique.

Paradoxalement, les luttes contre la discrimination exigent elles aussi une vigilance sur la généralisation inverse. En effet, généraliser l’oppression d’un groupe peut conduire à désindividualiser les membres de ce groupe tout autant. Tous ses membres sont nuls !

Alors, comment s’en prémunir ? Non pas en cessant de généraliser, ce serait impossible et paralyserait toute pensée. Toutefois, il est possible de composer avec et de cultiver quelques techniques. Par exemple, prendre le temps de distinguer la règle et l’exception, en laissant de la place à l’ouverture des nouvelles façons de voir, maintenir un esprit critique face aux affirmations trop générales en gardant en perspective que l’on appelle l’inconnu, l’improbable et la confusion sont des éléments de perspective qui échappent à nos capacités actuelles de compréhension, développer une conscience de la pertinence et de l’impact de ce que l’on généralise, reconnaître que les généralisations sont des étapes transitoires vers de nouvelles perspectives, et s’exposer volontairement à des cas qui contredisent la généralisation, et ce n’est pas facile, car cela exige de chercher ce qui nous dérange.

La généralisation est souvent une étape de développement de la pensée avant que nous développions la capacité de saisir les nuances de la réalité dans toute sa complexité.
