The fascinating thing about this topic is how many fedi conversations it's inspired to sink down into the deep hole of the 19th century Anglo-European Race Science embedded in the brains of the left.
There's some crazy fucked up takes happening around these parts. Whats next, phrenology?
The blood quantum ratio counting is strong with these ones.
" #California is poised to become the first state to treat #Jewish identity as an #ethnicity on official forms, with a new optional checkbox heading to #Gov. #GavinNewsom’s desk.
Supporters say the change could reveal gaps in #healthcare, #education and #hatecrime response for the state’s 1.2 million #Jews, giving officials better data to direct resources.
Opponents warn a single ‘Jewish’ #ethnic box oversimplifies diverse Jewish histories and risks echoing past government tracking, amid elevated #antisemitism and debate over #religion, #ancestry and #culture."

"What makes #Jewish #food Jewish?
“Not food #Jews eat,” said the late #GilMarks in an interview about his monumental Encyclopedia of Jewish Food in 2010.
After all, he pointed out, contemporary #Ashkenazi Jews probably eat more salsa and sushi than schmaltz. Jewish food, he said, is food that “almost becomes sanctified by its use in Jewish life.”
#Marks, a #rabbi, historian, and extraordinary repository of culinary knowledge, was born in West Virginia and died, far too young, in Jerusalem in 2014.
His words came back to me as I began going through my food lists and #recipes, stained from years of #cooking in preparation for #RoshHashanah.
What are the foods that have become sanctified in our family?"

When Jews were expelled from the Iberian peninsula in the 15th century, the Ottoman Empire sent ships to bring them into their empire in the Eastern Mediterranean.
That is how Thessaloniki in Greece grew its large Sephardic Jewish community, until World War II.

"...it is actually a very big deal when the richest person on Earth, who also owns one of the most influential communications platforms on Earth, starts publicly dabbling in ideas about #Jews, bloodlines, DNA, appearance, and racial authenticity. (You remember the people who did that back in the 1930s and 1940s, right?)."

[T]he first data from #Jewish respondents is “particularly alarming,” and suggested the numbers could be higher as many Jewish #civilservants are afraid to publicly identify as Jewish at the workplace.
“The data that we are seeing today points to really high levels of #discrimination amongst those Jewish employees that feel comfortable in self-identifying. A lot of folks still hide their identity because they’re afraid,” Wilczynski explained.
Since the #Oct7, 2023 #Hamas attacks, #antisemitism in #Canada has reached levels without precedent in the available data. #StatisticsCanada’s police-reported #hatecrime figures, released in July, show that #hatecrimes targeting #Jews jumped 82 percent in 2023, to 959 from 527 the year before. The count has since eased slightly—943 in 2024 and 788 in 2025—but Jews, who make up roughly 1 percent of the population, were the target of 70.7 percent of all religion-motivated hate crimes and 16.7 percent of the 4,708 hate crimes..."

"In 2019, #DavidSorkin described his #book #Jewish Emancipation: A History Across Five Centuries as an effort to “re-direct the focus of modern Jewish #history.” “Jewish emancipation” refers in this case to the #Jews’ acquiring rights of #citizenship, and more generally #civilrights, in the countries where they had lived for centuries as resident strangers. By his own admission, #Sorkin wrote about that process of change “from the side of the state.” His new book, The Emancipationists: Nineteenth-Century Jews’ Campaign for Citizenship, is his effort to complement his prior work with “the other side of that history, the Jews’ political mobilization.”
The #Yale #historian’s primary interest is the period from the late 18th century to the eve of World War I, a time during which #European nations, and to a lesser degree the #UnitedStates and North #Africa, addressed and reformed the status of Jews in their midst."

"For many #Jews, the morning of #Oct7 remains seared into memory. In #JoannSfar’s case, it was also the day of his birthday party, which included “as many #Muslims as Jews,” he told me. Amidst tragedy, #Sfar felt a profound gratitude for life, which seemed especially precious. It was a day of fear and uncertainty, followed by many more over the following months. For Sfar, drawing was the only way out.
To Life is Sfar’s #illustrated journal of his experience after Oct. 7, a reflection of his fierce peace advocacy coupled with a profound connection to #Israel. It follows several previous #books by Sfar, who is a #French #Jewish #graphicnovelist best known for The Rabbi’s Cat. His works touch on his #Sephardic heritage, highlighting a history of friendship and brotherhood between #Arabs and Jews.
To Life is the #English #translation of Nous Vivrons, which was #published in June 2024 as the first of a three-part series."

Not a flattering review given the lens chosen. IDGAF. My copy gets here today and I'm looking forward to it. Pun intended.
"A few days after I started #reading #DaraHorn’s new #book, I was called a “#kike” for the first time to my face.
It was a sunny afternoon and I was wearing my Newsguild shirt. A person on the sidewalk, deshabille, possibly collecting junk, asked what union I was in. Against my better judgment I engaged, believing them to be a fellow worker. I said I was a journalist. They then decided I was a “fascist” and “complicit.”
“Do you like writing about the #genocide in #Palestine? The war in #Iran?” they asked me, trailing me past a #Judaica store in a very #Jewish neighborhood.
[...]
#Horn’s The #FinalSolution to #theJewishQuestion: A Love Story for the Living, her latest provocatively-titled #nonfiction book is a survey of #antisemitism past and present and the ways #Jews explain ourselves to the world. At its heart, it is about #education."

Goodbye Jerusalem
Since the dawn of Islam, Jerusalem has been an integral part of its faith. Its air carries the blessed breaths of messengers who chanted the remembrance of God and called for His oneness. Its Al-Aqsa Mosque is the place of the Prophet’s Night Journey, may God bless him and grant him peace. God has blessed its surroundings and multiplied the reward for those who worship in it. How many stories have been told in its path, and how many heroic deeds and stances have been recorded in its courtyards? -
"Over the centuries, #American #Jews have built a vast religious landscape in which no single institution or orthodoxy can reign supreme or dictate how #Judaism should be practised. Such free market Judaism has produced a panoply of diverse religious #Jewish life, but it has also made collective representation more difficult.
Who ends up speaking on behalf of American Jews when #antisemitism spikes? Who testifies on Capitol Hill before Congress? Who can synthesise the concerns of #Orthodox, #Reform, #Conservative and unaffiliated Jews without pretending their differences don’t exist?
Whether #America ever gets a chief #rabbi again or a universally-accepted council of chief #rabbis may be beside the point. What isn't beside the point is that at a time of disturbing levels of antisemitism and a Jewish community fractured by politics, some kind of unity, however America chooses to build it, has never felt more necessary."

" #EzraFeig begins each Friday the same way: corralling 100 #Jews to go on a #run in #CentralPark.
He stands up on a park bench, towering above the crowd. They’re schmoozing and stretching, with impressive energy considering the hour. Around half wear blue shirts and shorts emblazoned with a white #StarofDavid, interlaced with an outline of a #runner.
#Feig spreads his arms wide and says “Welcome to #NiceJewishRunners.”
A 35-year-old health care entrepreneur, Feig launched Nice #Jewish #Runners in the wake of the #Hamas-led #Oct7 attacks on #Israel. Three years later, the running group has kept up its pace. Jews from multiple generations, but mostly in their 20s and 30s, continue to feel the group’s pull. For those raised in less observant backgrounds but called to engage more with their #Judaism after Oct. 7, the weekly jogs give them a way to do so outside a #synagogue.
The group has expanded to at least 19 cities in five countries around the world."

"[A] #Jewish #scholar of #Christian #Scriptures. Levine has worked to improve how #Christians and her fellow #Jews understand each other. She's spoken at many #churches and taught students about the ancient Jewish context of Jesus' life and teachings. She's #authored numerous #books, some in tandem with Christian #scholars; she and a co- #author even presented one #book personally to #Pope Francis.
But after the #Catholic Biblical Association of #America announced earlier this month that Levine was elected its first-ever Jewish president, an #antisemitic backlash began.
Denunciations appeared [...] Critics called her “anti-Christian,” claimed she's trying to hijack #Catholicism, denounced Jews for not accepting Jesus, and tacked on anti- #Zionist comments.
While some questioned why the association would appoint anyone who wasn't a Catholic, much of the criticism was infused with anti-Jewish statements. They come at a time of rising #antisemitism in the country.

"Last week, #DaraHorn was hosted on #HavivRettigGur’s #podcast, “#AskHavivAnything,” to discuss her past #book and her soon-to-be-released book, both of which argue that #Holocaust #education in the #UnitedStates commonly fails to teach about the #Jewish people and #antisemitism, with possible negative consequences.
As #Horn has famously put it, our world seems far more invested in teaching about “dead #Jews” than about Jewish life. She suggests that this approach may reinforce the very hatred it is supposed to inoculate against.
Within hours of that episode airing, #Instagram accounts were using clips from the podcast to accuse the #Holocausteducation organization I work for of harming Jews. I am certain this is not what Horn intends, but one consequence of her argument is that it can easily be reduced to the belief that “Holocaust education does not work.”
It does, in fact, not work and the positive indicators in the article make Horn's case not Cunningham's. 🙄

"I don’t care about #antisemitism.
That does not mean I don’t care about #Jews. I am #shomerShabbat, attend a community #minyan daily, have three #Jewish grandsons (so far …), and a brother whom I helped bring to traditional Jewish practice who lives in #Jerusalem and learns in #kollel.
I care a lot about Jews.
What I am tired of is Jewish political and communal organizations making the fight against antisemitism such a focal point of #American Jewish life.
We have organizations fighting antisemitism, conferences about antisemitism, committees studying antisemitism, webinars teaching us about antisemitism and politicians condemning antisemitism. Then, after something actually happens, the police increase patrols in Jewish neighborhoods, statements are issued, everybody promises that hate has no home here, and we wait for the next incident.
And yet antisemitism seems to be doing just fine.
Maybe we are fighting the wrong battle."

Think about the Nazi and what they did to a “culture of people”. That is stage 4 Culture Cancer. The situation is truly critical.
That case of Culture Cancer left 6 million people dead just because they were “Jews” .
Speaking of Jews, Israel has systematically murdered, starved, and abused many tens of thousands of people in Gaza. Has destroyed hospitals, targeted doctors and journalists, refused to let food in leading to mass starvation, and overall leveled almost the entire Gaza.
Such a terrible irony….

Ross is wrong.
The right can act with impunity when the left doesn't fight them on it. If the right is able to bring violence its because the gentile left is either too small, weak, and irrelevant to do anything about it or they've decided the victim is undeserving of their support.
Left/Right same system for Jews.
"When #Jewish leaders speak out these days, it’s often to blast the anti-#Israel actions of one #DemocraticSocialistsofAmerica #politician or another. Given all the attention — and the millions of dollars raised within the Jewish community to help defeat these #candidates — you’d think the greatest existential threat to #American #Jews was coming from the left.
But a new #book by #historian #StevenRoss is here to tell you: You’d be mistaken.
“What you’ve seen seeping in on the far left is more anti-Israel and some #antisemitism,” #Ross told me in a phone interview. “But here’s the thing: the left has never called for death to people, the right has.”

But they also carry human #stories — the #architects, #engineers, #entrepreneurs, #patrons, and communities who imagined and built them. #Scholars have never identified a #Jewish style of architecture. #StanleyTigerman, a generation later and the grandchild of Eastern #European Jewish #immigrants, broke directly into #Chicago’s top firms without needing that workaround. He spent a career trying to find a Jewish style of architecture, tracing lines all the way back to #SolomonsTemple in his 1988 #book Architecture of Exile — and admitted the connection was “a real stretch.” There isn’t one. What there is instead is something more interesting: #Jews living across different eras who helped shape the urban landscape around them while navigating questions of identity, opportunity, community, and belonging. This column will explore those #stories."

"In this moment of rising #antisemitism, I’ve noticed that the way I remember, and retell, my own childhood has changed too.
When people hear I’m from #Omaha, they usually say, “I didn’t know there were #Jews there.” I tell them there were, just not many, and that it was a lovely place to grow up #Jewish. When people ask about antisemitism, I usually say I grew up with almost none. That was true. Mostly but not entirely.
A few years ago, before #October7, I was on a podcast when that tension caught up with me. Right after saying I’d experienced very little antisemitism, I mentioned, almost as an aside, that in second grade, someone came to our home in the middle of the night and painted a #swastika on our front door.
“That sounds like a lot of antisemitism,” the interviewer said. She was right.
Why had I always left that detail out? It happened, it was part of my childhood story. But we washed it out..."

Grzegorz Braun never fails. You have to appreciate his consistency. :blobcatglaredrink:
"#Polish and #Jewish leaders, as well as #diplomats from various countries, have today taken part in commemorations of the 85th anniversary of the #Jedwabne #pogrom, in which hundreds of #Jews were killed by their Polish neighbours under the watch of the #Nazi-#German occupiers.
The events were met with a protest by #nationalist activists – led by #GrzegorzBraun, a prominent #farright leader – who displayed a banner calling the official findings regarding the pogrom “Jewish lies”. They argue that #Poles are falsely blamed for Nazi-German crimes."

"The #Italian #Parliament has introduced a bill that would allow the government to create a #restitution process for #art and #culturalproperty lost under #Fascist laws and during the broader #Holocaust period.
Bill 2834 would enable the Italian Government to create a framework for #reparations for art and other cultural items that were seized or otherwise looted due to #antisemitic persecution that was codified and permitted by law under #BenitoMussolini's Fascist government in 1938.
The bill was reviewed by the Chamber of Deputies’ VII Committee on Culture, Science, and Education on June 24. During the hearing, the President of the Union of Italian #Jewish Communities (#UCEI), #LiviaOttolenghi, affirmed her support for the proposal.
"There is no need to repeat how deeply the wounds inflicted by the racial laws are still felt today by Italian #Jews and our communities," Ottolenghi stated."

"[S]ix million people were sent to the #Soviet #Gulag. A quarter did not survive. Another 16-17 million were transported to strict regime #laborcamps, where the death rate was around 10%.
Within these numbers are the names of tens of thousands of #Jews of every kind, from the devout #hassid to the #assimilated #Communist.
#Stalin’s rule was fortified by spies who believed that they were repairing the world and saving it from the ravages of #fascism. The most effective of these were five young idealists who were at #CambridgeUniversity in the 1930s and who bore witness to the rise of #Hitler and the march of #Nazism across Europe.
#TheCambridgeFive: #GuyBurgess, #DonaldMcLean, #KimPhilby, #AnthonyBlunt, and #JohnCairncross sold their collective soul to Stalin. While their story has been retold countless times in many #books, the remarkable Stalin’s Apostles: The Cambridge Five and the Making of the Soviet Empire by #AntoniaSenior sheds new light[...]"

"The oldest #rabbinical seminary in #Europe stands just a few streets from the #Danube in the heart of #Budapest. It has survived empires, #fascism and #communism. It outlasted the #Nazis, who turned it into #AdolfEichmann's headquarters for organizing the deportation of #Hungarian #Jews to the #deathcamps. It endured four decades of #communist rule as the only #rabbinicalseminary in #EasternEurope. Today, it remains a center of #Jewish learning.
Its story encapsulates one of the great paradoxes of Jewish life in modern Europe.
#Hungary is often described by Jews themselves as one of the safest countries on the continent in which to live openly as Jews.
[...]
Yet Hungary also consistently ranks among the European countries with the highest levels of #antisemitic attitudes."

I truly hope that American #Catholics aren't subjected to hatred and harassment as a result of Red Don's utterly idiotic and one-sided feud with the Pope. But if they are, I'm confident that #Jews like myself will stand by them. We understand what ignorant hatred can to do a community.
