Persecution of the Latter-day Saints
In the 1830s and 1840s, Latter-day Saints faced severe hostility in Missouri and Illinois amid religious, economic, and political conflict. Missouri’s governor ordered them treated as enemies and “exterminated or driven from the state”; thousands fled to Illinois. Tensions later engulfed Nauvoo. In 1844 an armed mob stormed Carthage Jail and killed Joseph and Hyrum Smith. Violence continued, helping drive the Saints’ mass departure west. #religiousfreedom
