  1. Four days later the Senate confirmed the man Sullivan had already found in violation of that same Act.

One reporter. One statute. One filing cabinet the entire federal government would rather she had left alone. When did one person last make this government open a drawer it had already decided to keep shut?

  2. An attorney with a license to protect, a byline, and a working client list filed the first lawsuit anyone has ever brought to enforce the Epstein Files Transparency Act. Against the Justice Department. Alone.

Judge Emmet Sullivan sided with her. Ordered the department to unredact key documents and publish a redaction log, and then declined to pause his own order so the government could appeal. #Epstein #Journalism #PressFreedom #Accountability #Law #Courts #News #USPolitics #FOIA

  3. Chinese journalist Zhang Zhan (張展) has suffered years of repression by the Chinese party-state

"Two years after Zhang Zhan’s re-arrest, the Chinese regime is doing everything in its power to suppress information about the current health and situation of this icon of Chinese journalism, who warned the world about a deadly disease. We remain deeply concerned for Zhang Zhan’s health." - Aleksandra Bielakowska, RSF

  4. 🚨 Global press freedom just hit a 25-year low. For the first time, over 50% of countries fall into the "difficult" or "very serious" categories.

📉 Journalism is increasingly criminalised globally.
    🇺🇸 The U.S. dropped 7 places.

  5. The KMT's efforts to slash the budget of Taiwan's international English-language broadcaster is politically motivated and short-sighted

"If TaiwanPlus is starved of funding and forced to shrink or disappear, Taiwan will lose its principal independent vehicle for telling its own story to the world. Local media focused on domestic partisan battles will leave the international information space largely uncontested."

  7. Pentagon Spokesperson Admits There’s a Secret Blacklist of Journalists

When pressed about the Iran war, a CENTCOM press official threatened to put an Intercept reporter on a “list of people to disregard.”

    Nick Turse, August 24 2026

Excerpt: "Under self-styled #WarSecretary #PeteHegseth, the U.S. military has mounted the most aggressive assault on #PressFreedom in memory, from an effort to outlaw 'unauthorized' questions from reporters to imposing unconstitutional restrictions on journalists’ access to the Pentagon. Hegseth has compared reporters to 'Pharisees,' who in the Bible call Jesus’s teachings into question, while the secretary’s minions regularly hurl insults at reporters. This is part of a broader war on press freedoms by the #TrumpAdministration, that includes demonizing #journalists; filing so-called strategic lawsuits against public participation, or #SLAPPs, to intimidate and silence criticism through expensive legal proceedings; and employing grand jury subpoenas and search warrants to intimidate reporters.

" 'Threatening journalists with placement on a #blacklist in retaliation for reporting the government doesn’t like is as #unconstitutional as it gets,' said Seth Stern, the director of advocacy for Freedom of the Press Foundation. 'This should put to rest the Pentagon’s prior claims that it’s anti-press policies — like its infamous requirement that reporters sign pledges to only print authorized information — are somehow content neutral.'

"Allee revealed the existence of the blacklist after this reporter was left on hold for more than two hours and complained about a long-standing lack of transparency by the command. In calls earlier that morning, Maj. Emma Thompson, #CENTCOM ’s media operations chief, repeatedly refused to answer questions about Iranian attacks on U.S. bases across the Middle East, disparate U.S. casualty counts, and medical evacuation flights: 'Nothing for you,' 'Don’t have anything for you,' 'No comment.' Thompson then hung up on this reporter mid-question.

#TheIntercept called back multiple times until Allee picked up the phone. 'They’re not going to answer your call if you just keep calling and calling,' he told this reporter."

  12. Freedom of the press was always illusory here in the "U.S."

From the article: Erik Slavin, editor-in-chief of the military newspaper that is partly funded by the Pentagon, told The Associated Press he was dismissed for insubordination after an interview he gave that objected to censorship by the US military on conditions facing US soldiers aboard USS Abraham Lincoln.

  13. Who gets to judge the press? Soon an AI — if you can pay for it.

Peter Thiel, who secretly bankrupted Gawker in 2016, is now backing "Objection.ai": for $2,000–15,000, an AI jury "rates" press claims — with a public score for journalists. First targets: NYT, WSJ, individual reporters.
No court. No right to reply. Just money and an algorithm.

"But what has happened to [Carlitos Ricardo] Parias is something different: [The] journalist was injured while documenting government power, shot during an attempt to arrest him, prosecuted, repeatedly denied medical care —and then left in immigration detention, where he has continued documenting the conditions around him." #ice #pressfreedom
