  1. The End of Local News? Why I’m Saying Alarm Bells are Ringing at the New FCC Policy

by Winston Wendell For years, I studied the relationship between information and society. But the latest policy changes in Washington are deeply troubling. This week, the Federal Communications Commission, in a 2-1 vote, overturned a key media ownership rule protecting the diversity of viewpoints in our news and entertainment. This decision, which has been made by a Republican majority, allows bigger corporations to acquire a significantly greater share of local news. If this is to be […]

  3. New Deep Dive:

Iranian-linked hackers hit water systems in 7+ states this summer — no ransom, just disruption.

At the core: a known, unpatched Rockwell PLC vulnerability sitting in thousands of exposed U.S. systems since 2021.

Federal agencies call it an urgent Iran-affiliated threat. Trump blamed Minnesota instead.

We dig into the tech, the timeline, and the disconnect.

  6. Then Monday the Pentagon announced deals to triple PAC-3 and quadruple THAAD production.
Nobody quadruples production of a thing they have plenty of. Bullshit does not survive a purchase order.
Strip the tough-guy cosplay off "hunted down" and what's underneath is a civil servant with a conscience and a mortgage about to get their phone records pulled. Not a spy. A GS-13.

He said the leakers of these treasonous statements are being hunted down and long-term jail sentences will be sought. He also insists the reports are false.

  15. A fascinating article about how a group of journalists working for the Hungary state news agency quietly documented all the ways the news was manipulated under the Orbán regime. They have now released a detailed report.

Among many things, this is a terrific example of resistance during the rule of authoritarian regimes. Document, document, document the abuses because one day the sun will shine and the truth can be revealed.

  17. @chum1ng0 I responded to your message on Signal, but let's keep this here because it may be a press freedom/ free speech issue.

What blog/platform banned your blog? And what reason did they give?

And do you have a complete backup that you can upload elsewhere?

As I mentioned the other day, there are free legal resources and help for independent media, but first explain more about what happened and why.

    #pressfreedom @freespeech #censorship

(For those of you who don't know, Chu used to report LatAm breaches on DataBreaches.net. It's hard for me to imagine how he would get banned for the kind of reporting he does, but... let's find out. )

The European Federation of Science Journalists (EFSJ) stands in solidarity with Darya Shipacheva, the Russian science and health journalist who was sentenced to 12 years in prison on dubious treason charges, after an expedited process with zero transparency.

Shipacheva is an experienced science and health reporter with bylines in major Russian media outlets. She is a book author and podcaster who used her lived experience with chronic pain to inform her audiences on a topic that otherwise gets very little attention.

According to media reports, Shipacheva, who was born in Ukraine, may have been accused of treason after a money transfer to relatives there. She was arrested shortly before graduating from her Master’s program in 2025 and spent about a year in detention before a closed-door court hearing on July 27 that lasted a total of 1.5 hours.

Treason charges in Russia are notoriously impossible to beat in court and widely thought to be an instrument of political persecution, fueled by perverse incentives for the state security services. Several dozen Russian scientists *and journalists* have also been accused of treason in the last decades, and overall new treason cases have skyrocketed after the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Russian Government has stepped up its relentless attack on the independent media and civil society. As a result, the Russian Association for Science Journalism (AKSON), a founding member of the EFSJ in 2019, was forced to disband following pressure from the Russian Government.

Darya Shipacheva, as well as other journalists imprisoned in Russia, should be free to do their job.

  23. She was 13 when the world decided who she was.

At 24, she scored the first run in the first game of America's first pro women's baseball league in 72 years.

Mo'ne Davis never stopped playing — the sport just had to catch up.

New deep dive, out now on Patreon: 72 years, 4 failed leagues, and one long way back to first.
