  1. Nigerian Lawyers in Political Careers: A Historical, Structural, and Contemporary Analysis

The intersection of law and politics in Nigeria is profound and longstanding. Lawyers have disproportionately shaped the country’s political landscape, from pre-independence nationalism to post-1999 democratic governance. Legal training emphasizing advocacy, constitutional interpretation, negotiation, evidence-based reasoning, and oratory equips practitioners exceptionally well for political roles. This pattern reflects both the profession’s prestige and Nigeria’s constitutional emphasis on legal expertise in governance.

  4. "Chief Justice John Roberts is sending a message not only to Mr. Trump but also to the waiting world. Something along the lines of, 'People, this is what we’re dealing with.' The point being not that some fertilizers are now exempt from reciprocal tariffs but that a reckless president is sowing chaos in America and around the globe":

  5. What a joke

    #JohnRoberts' annual report

The chief justice touted #JudicialIndependence & urged Americans to keep faith in the #Constitution in year-end statement

Focusing on the #DeclarationOfIndependence as the nation turns to its 250th anniversary, Roberts said the #founders chafed at the crown’s control of colonial courts & “corrected this flaw” by setting up a #judiciary that would operate without interference from the other branches.

  6. His son Sebastien Lai said the family had expected a guilty verdict, “but that doesn’t make it any less devastating.”

“In the 800-page verdict they have there is essentially nothing, nothing that incriminates him,” he told reporters in London. “This is a perfect example of how the national security law has been molded & weaponized against someone who essentially said stuff that they didn’t like.”

  7. #JimmyLai has spent 5 years in custody, much of it in solitary confinement, & his family said his health has declined rapidly.

Lai’s trial, conducted in a #HongKong court without a jury, has been closely monitored by the US, Britain, the EU & political observers as a barometer of #media freedom & #JudicialIndependence in the former British colony, which returned to Chinese rule in 1997.

  8. Three government-vetted judges found Lai, 78, guilty of conspiring with others to collude with foreign forces to endanger national security & conspiracy to publish seditious articles. He pleaded not guilty to all charges.

#JimmyLai was arrested in August 2020 under a Beijing-imposed national security #law that was implemented following massive anti-government protests in 2019.

  12. Happy “Independence Day” I guess?

H.R.1 slashes court funding and boosts congressional control over judges, undermining #JudicialIndependence. It ends most #Asylum after 14 days, adds steep fees for #Migrants, and throws billions at #ICE and Border Patrol. It weakens the judiciary, harms #Democracy, and targets #Immigrants by design.

  13. In a recent segment, CNN's Pamela Brown sparked critical discourse by challenging Stephen Miller on the Trump administration's inconsistent responses to court rulings. She highlighted the contradiction in labeling judges "rogue" when outcomes are unfavorable, raising questions of accountability and respect for judicial independence. Miller's dismissive replies unveiled a concerning stance towards the judiciary.

  14. Kevin Breuninger’s article reveals that Judge Richard Leon has definitively deemed President Trump's executive order against WilmerHale unconstitutional. Leon's 73-page ruling highlights the importance of an independent judiciary, scorches the administration's claims as "absurd," and warns against undermining constitutional principles. This decision reflects a troubling pattern of the former president's attacks on opposing legal entities. For the full story, click here: cnbc.com/2025/05/27/trump-leon

  15. But in the following year, as Kennedy reverted to greater agreement w/the Chief Justice, #Souter found himself on the minority side of far more split decisions.

…The 1992-93 decline of the Souter-O'Connor-Kennedy trio led some observers to highlight how Kennedy had moved back rightward, but Paul Barrett of WSJ contended that actually the "most striking development" was Souter's "emerging #liberal streak."

  16. …Casey was the most important case of the 1991-92 term, but there were other impressive Souter successes. He, Kennedy & O'Connor also came together, again joined by Blackmun & Stevens, in a crucial #EstablishmentClause case, Lee v. Weisman, where they struck down the recital of #religious prayers at #PublicSchool graduation ceremonies.

  17. Harry Blackmun's concurrence accurately termed the #Souter-O'Connor-Kennedy joint opinion "an act of personal courage & constitutional principle," & Blackmun added that "what has happened today should serve as a model for future Justices & a warning to all who have tried to turn this Court into yet another #political branch."

    #DavidSouter #SCOTUS #law #judiciary #JudicialIndependence #ethics

  18. Then #Souter moved to the core of his argument, 2 paragraphs that rank among the most memorable lines ever authored by an American #jurist:

"Where, in the performance of its judicial duties, the Court decides a case in such a way as to resolve the sort of intensely divisive controversy reflected in #Roe & those rare, comparable cases, its decision has a dimension that the resolution of the normal case does not carry.

    #DavidSouter #SCOTUS #law #judiciary #JudicialIndependence #ethics

  19. That background had not been fully understood by the commentators & Senators who had debated what his 1990 nomination meant for the future of #Roe & other fundamental rights. If they had, what was now happening in Casey would not have come as a surprise.

#Souter's analysis reflected a realism not always found in high court pronouncements:

  20. In early June, #Souter, O'Connor & Kennedy distributed to their colleagues initial copies of their joint opinion. As David Savage later wrote in The Los Angeles Times: "Rehnquist & Scalia were stunned. So, too, was Blackmun." And so, on Monday morning, June 29, 1992, the final day of the term, commentators were unprepared for the result in #PlannedParenthoodVCasey.

  23. @tzimmer_history The Committee on Codes of Conduct of the Judicial Conference of the United States' proposal to bar membership in the Federalist Society for members of the judiciary is definitely worth being thought about & recommended.

Gorsuch & the other 5 SCOTUS-majority agents of Leonard Leo are — to no one's surprise — also members of the Federalist Society, implanted by Federalist-Society puppeteer Leo into the Supreme Court of the United States.
It shouldn't have come so far, to the disadvantage of millions of pregnant women, voting rights & civil rights of Americans of color & millions of members of vulnerable minorities like the LGBTQ community.
