It's #Wedsneigh fellow #Pleistocene fans.

Did you know that equids use their backwards shovel-shaped hooves to dig through ice and snow for grasses and other fodder? Most bovids (cows) will stand in a hayfield covered by six inches of snow and starve.

Without horses, I'm not sure we'd have made it through the last couple ice ages. Their nomadic foraging allowed other ungulates to follow and survive, and our ancestors to follow and hunt.

It's #WedsNeigh so here's a cute #horse we met in #Ireland earlier this year. After getting a lot of pats from the spousal unit, it got really possessive of him and wouldn't let the other horses go near him. A jealous type, that one was. #RedFlag

Trail #dogs are the BEST!! This 3-year-old, named Walker, “led” our return horseback trip for 16+ miles through the #mountains last week in #Colorado, including over a pass (11,900’). He energetically and repeatedly went out-back from the trail in all directions throughout the trip checking out great smells. We often do things to our pets and domestic animals without asking first, because they need care of course! Grooming and fly spray, for instance, are important for the health of horses. Did you know that animals are quite good at communicating their consent to things if we take a little time to establish a way for them to tell us? Here Taz, our rescued feral mare, presses her muzzle gently into Meredith’s hand to say it’s ok to drag a brush through her long tangled mane. If Taz stops pressing, Meredith will stop brushing until Taz lets her know it’s ok to start again by pressing. Meredith took a little extra time to come to this agreement with Taz, using the behavior of face-touching which Taz already knew and liked. It pays off in trust and consent to something that might otherwise feel unpleasant and scary. #wedsneigh #horses #positiveReinforcement #animalCommunication

For #Wedsneigh, a rather blurry shot of the crew when turned loose on the acreage to stretch their legs. For a few min now & then, it's quite nice to be where the law is still "open range."😎🐎 At some point there will be more pasture available, but for the moment, supervised cavorting has to do!
