Shadowplay
November, and at 14:30 the sun is already setting in the SSW only 5° above the horizon. We're at 66° north, in the lovely town of Ólafsfjörður. The temperature won't rise above freezing all day.
Walking down the side of the lake, we were enjoying the mountain view but particularly this set of sunbeams and shadows combining.
The mountain on the left is Hólshyrna (785 metres / 2575 feet) and the lake in the foreground is Ólafsfjarðarvatn.

Reaching the end of Breiðdalur valley and before we climbed the steep road to Breiðdalsheiði and Öxi pass, we stopped to stretch our legs and admire the mountains around us.
Heading towards Berufjörður in Fjarðabyggð. The mountain is Dýristindur.

Mountain Of Hell
Whenever we're in the south of Iceland, we try to pay a visit to this lovely monster. Hekla is an active stratovolcano with a height of 1,491 metres (4,892 feet) and shaped like an upturned boat.
It has erupted 20+ times between 1104 and 2000, with major eruptions in 1300, 1766, and 1947-48; the latter sent an ash cloud nearly 27 kilometres (16 miles) into the atmosphere.
On this mid-February day, it was eerily quiet and brooding.

It has erupted 20+ times between 1104 and 2000, with major eruptions in 1300, 1766, and 1947-48; the latter sent an ash cloud nearly 27 kilometres (16 miles) into the atmosphere.
On this mid-February day, it was eerily quiet and brooding.

The wind was from the north on this bright February day. Sweeping in across Húnafjörður bay, this moisture-laden air current collided with the frozen heights of Vatnsdalsfjall mountains.
Perfectly lit from the south and in the lee of the mountain pinnacle, it condensed into a thick cloudbank, mixed with spindrift snow from the peak.
The high ridge is Nautaþúfa¹ (923 metres, 3028 feet) in Húnabyggð, north-western Iceland.

Enclosed on three sides by mountains, we were there for the verdant mossy slopes and for the clean waterfalls dropping from Eyjafjallajökull stratovolcano and Guðnanípa mountain.

Before we entered the tunnel leading to Reyðarfjörður, we stopped to admire the beautiful mountains at the head of Fáskrúðsfjörður fjord.

Black Road
Mid-February, and we're crossing the north of Iceland for a 16 day tour. The weather has been kind to us; cold and snowing, of course, but we expected that.
What we didn't expect was how stunningly beautiful the landscape can become when covered in snow and ice. The ever-changing light adds to the appeal. Even the storms are spectacularly beautiful, if properly respected.

Mid-August, and a lovely warm day with a brisk wind coming in from the southern ocean.
The moisture-laden wind was lifted by the coastal mountains and met the glaciers, head-on. The rapid cooling and strong air movement created huge lenticular clouds all along the south coast.
Very brief, but absolutely magical.

As I turned to pick up the last things, I saw this through the window and my jaw literally dropped. The first sunlight was caressing the snowy flanks of the mountains on the other side of the bay. Briefly, packing had to wait.

Probably one of the most famous and recognisable mountains in Iceland, Kirkjufell (the eponymous "church mountain") stands 463 metres high on the northern coastline of Snæfellsnes peninsular.
This lovely pointed hat is a nunatak, formed when lava forced its way through a glacier, melting the surrounding ice and spreading out as it grew upwards.
This shot was taken at 21:30 in mid-August, and it was still light enough for photography.

Every time we've been there, it looks different. This time, a clump of cloud had formed on the leeward side of the peak, and patchy sunlight was picking out details in the structure.

Welcome To Narnia
Clothed in autumnal colours, streams tumbling beside us, waterfalls on every steep rockface, and the beauty of the long fjord leading to the sea. Magical.
Fjarðardalur, the "Fjord Valley," softly lit by sunlight from behind us and patched by cloud shadows ahead.
Looking like a scene from a fantasy novel, this is Mjóifjörður in eastern #Iceland.
