Following a valley towards Flateyjardalur in north-eastern Iceland, we stopped at some shepherds' huts to admire the view.
With the sun at its low meridian due south, the dramatic peaks surrounding the valley were breathtaking. One stood out amongst its neighbours; mist-wrapped and ice-coated, this perfect point.
The peak is Kambsmýrarhnjúkur¹ at 1,041 metres (3,415 feet) high.

15:30 late afternoon, mid-November in eastern Iceland, and the sun is setting in the south-west.
Looking north across Berufjörður, the mountains behind us are casting shadows onto the peaks on the opposite side of the fjord. Gradually they have crept up the faces of the mountains, and I have watched, spellbound.
A bizarre mountain named Stöng has a strange spiked pinnacle. For a perfect moment, only the very tip of it is sunset-lit.

Early November: The giants lie at the western end of the fjord.
1. Áreyjatindur (971m/3186ft)
2. Miðaftanstindur (1148m/3766ft)
3. Suðurfell (859m/2818ft) and
4. Brúðardalsfjall (703m/2306ft) -
"Old Woman Mountain Pass"
Kerlingarskarð¹ has an unusual criss-cross structure which is highlighted here. There are a few farm buildings at the foot of the mountain for scale.
This area is famous for ancient ignimbrites formed from the deposits of pyroclastic flows, hot suspensions of particles and gases dropping rapidly from a volcano.

Ice Giant
A beautiful day, and we're visiting the mountains of #Iceland's south coast.
Looking at the western face of Vatnajökull and the volcano named Öræfajökull we can see the island's highest mountain and summit crater - Hvannadalshnúkur (2110m/6923ft) - the two stumps on the right side.
On the left is Hrútsfjall (1857m/6093ft) and Skaftafellsjökull is the glacier dropping to ground level.

Church Mountain
Most visitors to the western coast of #Iceland try to visit this famous mountain. Our difference was that we were there at 10pm in July, and had the place effectively to ourselves.
"Kirk" in Icelandic means "church," and is pronounced almost exactly the same as in Scottish - with a virtually silent vowel.
The lovely Kirkjufell (469m/1540ft) in Snæfellsnes, which featured in "Game Of Thrones" amongst other TV and films.
