Outside of Mastodon, trans peoples are quite rare and as such, I don't know much trans artists. :(
The shame is on me and I will try to educate myself.
But in the meantime, for #TransMusicMonday I can point out that the idol unit PLANK STARS do include a trans idol!

For ethical reasons, I’m moving away from Spotify, so I’m not sure what will become of this playlist. For those interested, I’ve made and will be maintaining a #TransMusicMonday playlist on Apple Music, which should be viewable regardless of whether you have an account.

#TransMusicMonday
A Feast for Lampreys (Ecoterrorist antifascist metal from a trans person, metal archives says "gender: unknown")I’d been listening to their other band (Dzo-Nga for years without realizing there was a trans person behind the music, which is a cool discovery. Anyway, this is supposedly black/sludge. I can maaaaaaaaybe see black, but really it’s more in the gothy death metal realm. Still good, but there’s no sludge anywhere in this.

Crisis Sigil (Ada Rook, she/her)
Across two albums and an EP, there’s about 45 minutes of music in this discography, and man I hope there’s more to come. Room is best known for being half of Black Dresses, and so far I’ve loved everything I’ve heard from her. Here you’re typically looking at sort of a cybergrind situation with short, brutal songs typically either with a core-esque breakdown or some sort of electronic section. -
#TransMusicMonday
Project Roenwolfe (Alicia Cordisco, she/her)
There’s several things I don’t normally say that I’ve said about this band, including:
-I really like this NWOTHM band.
-The thrash elements are nice.
-Honestly, I could have done without the growls in the few places where they showed up.
-Wow, this metal band’s debut album is really good. -
#TransMusicMonday
Jake Zyrus (he/him)
Jake’s brand of pop reminds me a lot of what was dominating the airwaves when I was in high school. I think it’s something to do with the production; the instrumentation skews a bit more organic than I’m accustomed to hearing with modern pop (take with a grain of salt though, since I’m wholly unqualified to really comment on pop trends). -
#TransMusicMonday is also something for the #BlackMetalMonday crowd.
Wolven Daughter (Lamia, AFAIK she/her, finding details on a musician with 50 monthly streams wasn’t easy)For fans of lo-fi, aggressive, raw black metal. My black metal preferences skew more towards the atmospheric/depressive side of the genre, but if you like the angrier side of things, you’ll probably enjoy this.

It's #TransMusicMonday !
Here's some raw gothic antifascist black metal made by a trans guy from the US south.

BLKVAPOR (Kirby they/he, Proxy she/they)
A rather young project (first single out in 2021), they’ve come a long way in the past 4 years, starting out with a charming - if quite raw - punk if it were recorded like lo-fi black metal then compressed and downloaded over Napster sound, graduating to this sort of alt rock meets grunge sound where they really begin to gel. -
#TransMusicMonday
Ethel Caine
I found this project incredibly impressive in that there is a persistent gloom I found oppressive enough to be challenging, and I listen to DSBM and funeral doom for funsies. For the unfamiliar, imagine the persistent oppressive ennui flavor of depression filtered through a folk lens, and you’ve got a decent idea what she sounds like. Excellent execution of the idea, just definitely not for everyone. -

Mystic Priestess
Mystic Priestess was a darkwave/deathrock/post punk band. The main thing that has them standing apart from the masses of bands playing with those sounds is a drummer who staunchly refuses to be boring. Drums is one of those instruments, where if I’m noticing the drummer, it’s either a very good thing or a very bad thing, not really anything in between, and here it’s very much a good thing. -
#TransMusicMonday
Coyote Grace (Joe Stevens, he/him)
Ordinarily there’s a decision I have to make, what song I’ll be choosing for the weekly playlist addition, but as the only song the band has on Spotify is this one, that was a pretty easy decision this week. Think chill blues/folk. I get a bit of a James Taylor vibe off of this one. -
#TransMusicMonday
Lung (Daisy Caplan, he/they)
Lung reminds me a lot of Stolen Babies in that both slot into that alt metal/hard rock that’s quirky enough (while remaining fairly approachable) that it’s almost served as someone out there’s gateway to avant-garde music. Fantastic band I was listening to for around a year before finding out one of their members is NB. This whole album in particular is a great starting point. -
5.) Múr - Múr
Actually a brand new find. They give me a similar feel to Moonspell or Behemoth, that sort of highly polished and approachable gothy death metal.https://album.link/us/i/1774011814
6.) A Stick and a Stone - The Long Lost Art of Getting Lost
Another gift to my ears delivered to me by #TransMusicMonday, this is largely super dark and broody folk music. -
#TransMusicMonday Shamir (he/him or she/her)
Pinning Shamir down to a primary sound, so I could post a good snapshot isn’t easy, so I guess you’ll have to settle for a song I really liked the beat of.
-
#TransMusicMonday this week is @shonalika (they/them)
My introduction to Shonalika came from their video essays over on YouTube. Eventually I checked out their EP, and I personally really dig it. If you’ve ever found yourself enjoying the goth club experience, there’s a good chance you will as well.

Artist: Lee Teka (they/them)
Why? Lee Teka creates art from inside prison, a voice that should be heard. Also, they have written some catchy bars and rhymes that slap!
Where to start?
Keep in mind, every one of these songs was recorded over a phone call from prison...which makes it hit all the more.
"When a Game is not a Game" is a good introduction, and represents the downright cleverness of creating music from behind bars
https://youtu.be/LoSqNjixsUs?si=6-t9b-hI7RENt1LgI can't get "School to Prison Pipeline" out of my head.
https://youtu.be/8WR91wDhIeo?si=YopmurYalRX9uFTDMeanwhile "Penitentiary Dreams" feels like the realest cyberpunk synthwave I've heard in a long time
https://youtu.be/-NdmdjHj998?si=3KKCABUXVhfD_NsvLee Teka is also a comic artist (often under E.L. Tedana), and you can help support them by buying this wonderful anthology of their work from ABO Comix:

Aritst: Chelsea Wolfe (she/her)
Why? Her music captures this amazing tension between delicate and powerful that holds one in the place of unresolved liminality. Not to mention, one of the few artists who has really coalesced what I want most from goth music.
Where to start?
Her latest album is brilliant.
"House of Self-Undoing" is probably one of the best songs to start with, being a great example of delicate possibility riding waves of intensity.
https://chelseawolfe.bandcamp.com/track/house-of-self-undoingMy other favorite song is probably "The Liminal," as it hits the feels of being a genderqueer and neurodivergent weirdo that lives in liminality.

Also...yes, this is blatant trans lesbian nepotism. Pretty girls that kiss me get featured on trans music monday. Especially when I am very gay for her.
And yes, I am stoking another discourse - it's time we all talked about ethics in trans music hashtags and the blatant nepotism of one of the people that unpredictably shares trans music on the fedi. I expect you all to start a crowdfunding website tomorrow to create a documentary that proves that I am an evil, schemer coming for the straight boys music to trans it up....because that would be fucking metal as hell 😈🤘

Lastly, for those who like more experimental noise stuff, check out Concepts on Tape EP (https://farewellutopia.bandcamp.com/album/concepts-on-tape-ep). It's hard for me to describe why, but I'm obsessed with Loop 9 (https://farewellutopia.bandcamp.com/track/loop-9).

My favorite album of hers is "Indecision" (https://farewellutopia.bandcamp.com/album/indecision). It is heavily inspired by 70s and 80s horror soundtracks, reminding of the Goblins and other synthesizer heavy horror musical artists.
It also has a synth cover of "Transgender Dysphoria Blues"!!! Go listen to this amazingness! (https://farewellutopia.bandcamp.com/track/transgender-dysphoria-blues-against-me-cover)
