  1. GOOD VIBRATIONS

🎢 Once the rain let up in Helen, it was time to try the coaster. We had low expectations for its intensity, and the track was hidden in the dense trees. We decided not to use the brakes.

But the climb up went on forever. At the top, I had to stow my phone quickly because I could see the beginning of a long, steep, twisty ride down.

😱 The cart was going so fast at one point, it started to shake hard. In a moment of panic, I thought of dangerous sympathetic vibrations from physics and applied the brakes briefly so as to live.

    Afterwards, we rated it "Excellent".

  5. My photo yesterday seemed to be popular, possibly due to the overlap of people who love hot air balloons and the plains of South Africa. This is my full post and photoset from that day, a 50th birthday present from my mum. Includes dawn views and many animal sightings

  7. I didn't set out to experience all things Classen in Oklahoma City during a Route 66 road trip, but once I saw a minor theme emerging, I had to go with it:

  17. The term fly-in restaurants doesn't mean you need a pilot's license to eat there. It just means great places to dine at smaller airports. Here are 3 examples in College Station TX, Tulsa OK, and Hutchinson KS, in my latest for the Perceptive Travel Blog:

  21. Foreboding

It's early March, and everything is still and frozen solid. This shallow lagoon usually hosts feeding birds, but the brackish water and mudflats have been converted into an almost monochrome sheet of ice and snow drifts.

The heavy overcast makes the surrounding mountains dim and grey and, somehow, quite menacing. The snow is about to arrive, time to leave.
